Yes. Overlays, recording and streaming tools, chat clients, browsers, launchers and other background utilities can lower or destabilize frame rates when they compete with a game for CPU time, GPU time, memory or VRAM. The size of the change depends on the game, hardware and feature being used; there is no universal percentage loss that applies to every PC.
The reliable way to find out is a controlled A/B test: run the same game scene or benchmark with the software enabled and disabled, change only that one variable, repeat the run, and compare average FPS with frame-time or percentile-low results. A repeatable test reveals whether an overlay is merely visible or is actually causing slower frames and stutter.

Does gaming software lower FPS?
It can, but not every utility causes a noticeable drop. An overlay has to render its interface and collect telemetry, recording software must capture frames and encode video, and chat or browser processes can continue using CPU, RAM or VRAM while a game is running. If the system already has little headroom, that extra work can reduce throughput or create intermittent hitches.
Official support guidance reflects this variability. Microsoft Flight Simulator Support warns that overlays and background applications can negatively affect performance, while NVIDIA recommends disabling third-party tools when diagnosing poor performance. Those recommendations identify a real source of contention, not a fixed loss that can be predicted for every game.

Software is most likely to matter when it uses the same resource that limits the game. A CPU-bound title may lose frames when a recorder or chat client consumes processor time. A GPU-bound title can be affected by an overlay that adds rendering work. A memory-bound system may stutter when a browser, launcher or utility increases RAM or VRAM pressure. The same program can therefore be harmless in one game and disruptive in another.
Which gaming software features are most likely to affect performance?
Overlays and performance widgets
An overlay draws a second layer over the game and may poll clocks, temperatures, utilization and frame statistics. The rendering cost is often small, but it is not zero, and the telemetry collection adds CPU and memory activity. Overlay conflicts can also cause unusual behavior such as periodic stutter, failed frame pacing or a sharp drop only when a menu is open.

Recording, instant replay and streaming
Video capture reads frames continuously and then writes or encodes them. Instant-replay modes keep a rolling buffer even when you are not saving a clip. Streaming adds encoding, audio mixing and network work. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU load compared with software encoding, but it still consumes some GPU, memory bandwidth or dedicated encoder capacity.
Chat clients, browsers and launchers
A voice client may process audio, display notifications and maintain an overlay. Browsers can run video, animated advertising, extensions and background tabs. Launchers and update services may wake the CPU or access storage during a game. Close or pause unnecessary activity before testing so that a background task does not make one run look worse than another.
Optimization, RGB and monitoring utilities
Automatic “optimization” tools may scan the game, change settings or keep a service active. RGB controllers and hardware monitors can poll devices repeatedly. These tools are not automatically harmful, but they add variables to a diagnosis. Disable one feature at a time rather than uninstalling everything, so you can identify the component that changes the result.
Why does the FPS effect vary from one PC or game to another?
Performance is limited by whichever part of the system reaches its capacity first. When the GPU is already at full utilization, an overlay that needs a little more GPU work can reduce the game’s render time. When the GPU is waiting on the CPU, the same overlay may have almost no visible effect, while a recorder or browser that consumes CPU cycles can lower the frame rate.

How do you run a fair A/B test?
Use the following procedure when checking Discord, a driver overlay, recording software or any other utility. The goal is to change exactly one variable and make both runs as similar as possible.
- Standardize the software state. Update the game and graphics driver, then reboot. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends current patches and drivers when investigating performance or optimization problems. Record the game version, driver version, display resolution, graphics preset, upscaler and frame-generation setting.
- Choose a repeatable workload. Prefer the game’s built-in benchmark. If it has none, select a demanding area and follow the same route for the same duration, starting from the same save or checkpoint. Avoid comparing a quiet menu with a busy combat scene.
- Capture a baseline. Log average FPS, minimum or percentile-low FPS, frame time, GPU and CPU utilization, VRAM and system-RAM use, and temperatures. Keep the power plan, laptop power connection, fan mode and display refresh setting unchanged.
- Disable one utility or feature. Turn off only the overlay, recorder, instant replay, hardware-acceleration option or other feature you are testing. Leave every game setting and every other background program unchanged.
- Repeat the workload at least three times. Compare the median or middle result, not the single best run. A change is more credible when it appears repeatedly and in the same part of the route or benchmark.
- Isolate the winning feature. Re-enable the utility and test its components separately. For example, compare the chat client with its overlay off, then with hardware acceleration off, then with recording disabled. This prevents you from blaming an entire application when only one feature is responsible.
Keep notes for each run. A useful record includes the timestamp, run number, feature state, average FPS, 1% or other percentile-low value, worst frame time, latency, utilization and temperature. If a patch, driver, resolution or power mode changes, start a new test set rather than mixing results.

Which metrics reveal FPS drops and stutter?
Average FPS measures throughput over the run, but it can hide a short hitch. Minimum FPS and percentile lows show how slow the worst portion of the run became. Frame time shows the duration of each frame; a brief spike indicates a hitch even when the average remains high. Steam describes maximum frame time as useful for finding these brief interruptions.
Latency measures responsiveness rather than visual throughput. It can rise when generated-frame FPS looks high, so record latency separately when the software or game supports it. Compare like with like: use the same percentile definition, sampling interval and run duration for both A and B.
For orientation, frame time is the inverse of FPS: 60 FPS is about 16.7 milliseconds per frame, while a sudden 50-millisecond frame is a visible pause. The exact number that feels disruptive depends on the game and display, so the shape and repeatability of the spikes matter more than a universal threshold.
Which tools can measure the effect?
These tools cover different levels of detail. Steam is the quickest way to see whether a change is obvious; vendor overlays are convenient when their drivers are installed; NVIDIA FrameView is designed for repeatable logging and reports.

How can you test Discord, NVIDIA App, AMD Software or recording software?
Testing a chat client
- Run the baseline with the chat client open but its in-game overlay disabled.
- Repeat with the overlay enabled and no call or stream active.
- Test a voice call separately, then test hardware acceleration separately if the client offers that switch.
This separates the cost of the application itself from the cost of notifications, overlay drawing and live audio or video processing.
Testing a driver overlay
For the NVIDIA App, record one set with the statistics overlay off and another with it on, using the same hotkey state throughout each run. For AMD Software, use the same sampling interval in both runs and export the CSV so a short utilization or frame-time spike is not missed. Do not change the game’s graphics preset while enabling the overlay.
Testing recording and instant replay
- Run with recording and instant replay both off.
- Enable instant replay without saving a clip and repeat the benchmark.
- Disable instant replay, enable manual recording with the same resolution, frame rate and encoder, and repeat.
- If you stream, test the stream separately from local recording.
Compare GPU utilization, encoder activity when available, CPU use, frame time and latency in addition to average FPS. A recorder may leave average FPS nearly unchanged while increasing frame-time spikes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy is FPS lower only when an overlay is on?
First check whether the overlay is doing more than drawing text. A live graph may poll hardware frequently, a browser-based panel may animate, and a notification can trigger a capture or compositing path. Disable individual widgets and reduce the telemetry update rate before removing the entire utility.
Then check for resource saturation. If GPU utilization is near its limit only with the overlay enabled, lower overlay complexity or the game’s GPU-heavy settings. If CPU utilization or RAM use rises, close background processes and disable browser tabs, recording or hardware acceleration. If temperatures climb across runs, improve cooling or wait for the system to return to the same thermal state before comparing results.
Finally, look for conflicts. Microsoft Flight Simulator Support and NVIDIA both advise disabling overlays or third-party tools during diagnosis because incompatible hooks can cause performance problems even when resource use appears modest. Re-enable tools one by one after the test to identify the conflicting feature.

How should you interpret frame generation?
Frame-generation technology can make the displayed FPS differ from the game’s base rendering rate. Generated frames are inserted between game-rendered frames, so a counter that counts every displayed frame may look much higher without the same increase in game simulation or input responsiveness.
Steam’s performance monitor separates generated frames from actual game frames. Use that distinction when comparing an overlay or recorder: report base-game FPS and generated FPS separately when available, and include latency because visual FPS alone does not describe responsiveness.
What is the best measurement workflow for different needs?
- Quick sanity check: Use Steam’s monitor, run the same scene three times, and compare average and minimum FPS with the feature off and on.
- Driver-specific troubleshooting: Use the NVIDIA App or AMD Radeon Overlay, keeping the vendor’s sampling settings identical between runs.
- Stutter investigation: Capture frame time and percentile-low FPS with FrameView or AMD CSV logging, then match spikes to CPU, GPU, memory or temperature changes.
- Latency-sensitive games: Record latency alongside base-game FPS and frame time. Do not accept a higher generated-frame count as proof of better responsiveness.
- Before-and-after documentation: Save the benchmark report or CSV, note versions and settings, and rerun after every driver or game update.
The most useful conclusion is specific: “This overlay changed the median result by this amount in this game and scene, and it did or did not increase frame-time spikes.” Avoid presenting that result as a universal penalty for all gaming software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if the test shows a real performance loss?
- Keep the game and graphics driver current, then reboot and verify the result once more.
- Disable only the feature that reproduced the loss; leave unrelated utilities alone.
- Reduce overlay widgets, polling frequency, recording resolution or capture frame rate before sacrificing game settings.
- Close browsers, launchers and update services that are consuming CPU, RAM or disk activity during play.
- If the issue persists, test with all third-party overlays disabled, then re-enable them individually to find a conflict.
If the result disappears after a reboot or changes from run to run, suspect thermal state, shader compilation, background updates or an inconsistent scene rather than assigning blame to the software immediately.
FAQ
Can an FPS counter itself reduce performance?
Yes, a counter is an overlay and may add a small amount of rendering and telemetry work. Whether that is measurable depends on the game’s bottleneck and the counter’s update rate, so test the counter off and on rather than assuming either outcome.

Should I compare average FPS or 1% lows?
Use both when smoothness matters. Average FPS describes overall throughput, while percentile lows and frame-time spikes reveal the short stalls that players usually perceive as stutter.
Does closing a window stop its performance impact?
Not necessarily. A minimized browser, launcher or chat client can leave background processes, services, notifications or hardware-acceleration tasks active. End or pause the relevant process and verify the change with the same benchmark.

Can two FPS overlays show different numbers?
Yes. They may sample at different intervals, count generated frames differently or measure presentation time at different points in the rendering pipeline. Select one tool for the A/B comparison and document whether its number includes generated frames.
How many runs are enough to trust a result?
At least three consistent runs are a practical minimum for a home test. Use the median, investigate any outlier, and repeat the set after a reboot if the difference is small or appears only once.
