No—Ghost of Yōtei does not choose a canon ending for Ghost of Tsushima. Co-director Nate Fox said of the two possible outcomes, “It’s 300 years-plus later. Both endings are valid,” according to GamesRadar’s report on a MinnMax interview. The answer is that either choice—Jin sparing Lord Shimura or killing him—remains valid.

What did Nate Fox say about Tsushima’s endings?

GamesRadar reported on September 9, 2025, that Ghost of Yōtei co-director Nate Fox addressed whether the new game follows one of Ghost of Tsushima’s endings. His answer was: “It’s 300 years-plus later. Both endings are valid.” GamesRadar’s report also says Fox indicated that the earlier events will not be referenced in Yōtei.

So the follow-up does not establish whether Jin spared Shimura or killed him. Neither ending is made more canonical by the new game.

Why doesn’t Yōtei settle the choice?

Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct story sequel. In its FAQ, updated September 29, 2025, Sucker Punch says the game takes place several hundred years after Tsushima, and that Jin Sakai does not appear. The studio adds, “His legend, however, endures.” Sucker Punch’s official FAQ frames the connection as a continuation of the series’ mythos, not a continuation of Jin’s personal story.

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
  • Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
  • The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
  • Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
  • Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
  • A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.

PlayStation’s official game page describes Yōtei as an independent experience set 300 years after Tsushima. With that distance and a different protagonist, the new story does not need to select one outcome for Jin’s final decision.

Is Atsu connected to Jin?

GamesRadar reports that Fox said Atsu is not related to Jin and has not heard of him. Those details are attributed to the interview report; Sucker Punch’s FAQ separately confirms that Jin does not appear and that his legend endures. The report’s account does not change Fox’s explicit answer about the endings: both remain valid.

Does Jin’s story make one ending more likely?

Players may read Jin’s character or the themes of Tsushima as favoring one choice, but that is interpretation, not a canon ruling from Yōtei. In a 2020 PlayStation developer Q&A, Fox described the game as telling “the human story about Jin’s sacrifice to become the Ghost.” That thematic framing does not declare whether Jin kills or spares Shimura. PlayStation’s Q&A does not resolve that ending choice.
