God of War Sons of Sparta does not have co-op in its story campaign. Its separate challenge mode, The Pit, can be played solo or in two-player local, offline couch co-op. The distinction was easy to miss at launch: the US PlayStation Store lists “1 – 2 players” and “Single Player or 2 Player Couch Co-Op mode,” while PlayStation’s support FAQ clarifies that the story itself is single-player.

PlayStation Support describes the story as single-player and identifies The Pit as the game’s separate co-op option. The US PlayStation Store listing gives the overall game a one-to-two-player count, but that number does not mean the campaign supports two players.
What The Pit co-op is like
The Pit is an end-game roguelike challenge with enemies and reward pools that vary between runs. A solo run uses Kratos; in local co-op, players take control of Kratos and Deimos. Santa Monica Studio’s February 26, 2026 PlayStation Blog post describes it as “local, offline-only co-op.” The available official information does not establish online multiplayer.
Each run starts with an Agony, a global difficulty modifier. Players can add Agonies or increase their effects as they progress. Completing a run awards Symbols of Suffering, used to unlock more Agonies, and Ashes of Agony, used for persistent Pit upgrades. The game displays a score at the end of a run.

How to unlock The Pit early
The usual route is to finish the main campaign. PlayStation says this unlock timing gives players a chance to get familiar with Kratos’ Spartan arms and the enemies first. To access The Pit before completing the story, enter this sequence at the starting menu:
- Press Up, Up, Down, Down.
- Press Left, Right, Left, Right.
- Press L1, R1, then the Touchpad.
A new menu option for The Pit should appear when the sequence is entered successfully. PlayStation documented this early-unlock method on February 26, 2026.

Why the store listing caused mixed expectations
The store’s player count and couch-co-op label describe the game as a whole, not a promise that every mode is multiplayer. The key detail—that co-op belongs only to The Pit, rather than the campaign—is spelled out in PlayStation’s support information. GameSpot reported on February 26, 2026 that players were complaining about being unable to reach co-op before finishing the game; the early-unlock sequence offers another way to get to The Pit.
The PlayStation Store lists Sons of Sparta for PS5 and supports DualSense wireless controller vibration. The official pages reviewed do not specify whether a second controller is required for local co-op.
