Yes—but Nintendo explicitly documents split-screen Free Roam in a specific context: two players on one Nintendo Switch 2 can drive around while waiting for more players to join a local Wireless Play room. That is different from launching Free Roam as a standalone offline mode. Separately, same-system Multiplayer supports two to four players for racing and battle modes.
When can two players explore Free Roam split-screen?
In local Wireless Play, choose two players for your system, then create or join a room. Nintendo Australia says the screen splits and both players on that system can use Free Roam while they wait for others to join. This is a documented room-waiting activity, not confirmation of a separate offline Free Roam option launched from the standard single-system Multiplayer menu.
Wireless Play connects nearby systems without an internet connection. Nintendo Support also describes loading into Free Roam after creating or joining a wireless room. Its instructions allow two to eight players overall, with up to two players per system.
How does Free Roam differ from single-system Multiplayer?
Single-system Multiplayer means players share one console and choose a multiplayer game mode. Nintendo lists support for two, three, or four players on one system; its public overview names Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, VS Race, and Battle. The available documentation does not say that this menu launches standalone Free Roam.

Player counts and mode descriptions are from Nintendo Support’s Mario Kart World multiplayer instructions. The two-player split-screen Free Roam example is from Nintendo Australia’s February 4, 2026 multiplayer explainer.
How to start local Wireless Play
- From the title screen, select Wireless Play.
- Choose 1P or 2P for your system. Choose 2P if both players will share this Switch 2.
- Create a room or join one. Once in the room, both players on the system can use split-screen Free Roam while waiting for others.
For ordinary same-system Multiplayer, Nintendo’s support instructions instead say to press L and R at the title screen, select Multiplayer, choose the player count, and assign a controller to each player. That path leads to multiplayer game modes, not a documented standalone Free Roam selection.

What controllers and systems do you need?
The Nintendo Switch 2 includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers, enough for two players on one system. To add players three or four in same-system Multiplayer, you need additional compatible controllers. Nintendo also says original Joy-Con controllers work for local play. The game is a Nintendo Switch 2 title, released June 5, 2025, according to Nintendo’s US store listing.
