The revised Dungeons & Dragons fifth-edition Player’s Handbook became widely available on September 17, 2024. It updates fifth edition rather than launching an unrelated game line, with revised character creation, Weapon Mastery, new character options, and a 384-page rules reference. It is also listed on D&D Beyond’s marketplace as “Player’s Handbook (5.5e),” a useful distinction from the separate 2014 handbook.
When did the 2024 Player’s Handbook come out?
Hasbro announced a wide release date of September 17, 2024. In an August 5 announcement, the company said more than 3,000 fans received early copies at Gen Con 2024; that number is Hasbro’s announcement figure, not an independent count. D&D Beyond published its book overview on the wide-release date.
At the Gen Con announcement, Wizards of the Coast Vice President of D&D Franchise and Product Jess Lanzillo said: “Gen Con 2024 was such a celebration of the five decades of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS and a testament to the countless imaginations that have been inspired by this special community.” (Hasbro announcement, August 5, 2024)
What is the revised handbook, and what is it called?
This is a revised fifth-edition core rulebook, not a wholly separate D&D game line. D&D Beyond’s September 2024 overview calls it the 2024 Player’s Handbook; the marketplace listing uses the name “Player’s Handbook (5.5e).” Both labels refer to the revised book. The 2014 Player’s Handbook is an older, separate edition of the book.

The revised handbook is 384 pages, according to D&D Beyond’s 2024 overview and marketplace description. The publisher describes the 2024 core books as an update to fifth edition and says they are compatible with existing adventures and supplements. That is broad publisher guidance; a particular character option or rules interaction may still need to be checked against the actual texts. What’s new in the 2024 Player’s Handbook?
More character-building choices
D&D Beyond’s 2024 overview lists 12 classes, 48 subclasses, 16 backgrounds, 10 species, and 75 feats. Examples of new subclass choices named in the overview include the Path of the World Tree Barbarian, College of Dance Bard, and Circle of the Sea Druid.

Backgrounds now connect to ability score adjustments and a specific Origin feat. This changes where some character-building choices come from: backgrounds, rather than species, are tied to the ability score adjustments described in the revised system.
Weapon Mastery and revised combat options
Each weapon has a mastery property, and certain martial classes gain the Weapon Mastery feature. It lets those characters use different weapons for different combat effects, adding another choice to how they approach a fight.

Spells, rules explanations, and play guidance
The book includes nearly 400 spells, including revised and new spells, according to D&D Beyond. Its instructional material covers D20 Tests and the Magic action, gives examples of play, and includes step-by-step character creation, recommended ability scores and backgrounds, randomized character-attribute tables, and an annotated character sheet. A terminology appendix and extensive index are also included. (D&D Beyond, 2024)
Can you use older D&D books with it?
The publisher’s FAQ says existing adventures and supplements work with the 2024 core rulebooks and gives Curse of Strahd as an example. That makes the revised handbook an option for groups continuing an existing fifth-edition campaign, rather than a requirement to replace every older book.

Compatibility does not mean every older character option works unchanged. The revised handbook includes guidance for using older backgrounds and species with its rules; consult that guidance and the relevant text when combining specific options. Who is the 2024 handbook for?
- New players: The book’s step-by-step character creation and explanations of core rules provide an introduction to play.
- Returning players: It offers revised character-building rules, new options, and updated spell and combat material.
- Established groups: The publisher says existing adventures and supplements are compatible with the updated core rules, while specific character options and interactions may need attention.
Where can you get the revised Player’s Handbook?
D&D Beyond’s marketplace listing offers physical, digital, and digital-plus-physical formats. When checked on October 8, 2026, the official listing was marked out of stock. Stock and price can change, so confirm the current listing rather than assuming availability.
