Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNo. Roblox’s documented graphics modes identify Direct3D 11 as the Windows rendering API; DirectX 12 is not listed. Roblox’s requirement that a Windows PC support “DirectX 10 or higher feature level” is a separate hardware-compatibility requirement, not a statement that the client renders with DirectX 12.
Which graphics API does Roblox use on Windows?
Roblox’s GraphicsMode reference lists Direct3D11, OpenGL, Metal, Vulkan, Automatic, and NoGraphics. It defines Direct3D11 as “Direct3D Version 11 (Microsoft).” DirectX 12 does not appear among the documented modes.
The RenderSettings reference says the rendering API is initialized when the client starts. In Automatic mode, Roblox selects a suitable backend for the current platform. Its examples include Direct3D11 for Windows and Metal for macOS; the available backend depends on the platform.
Why does Roblox require DirectX 10 or higher?
That requirement describes what the graphics card must support, not which API Roblox uses to render. Roblox Support says the Windows application requires “DirectX 10 or higher feature level support.” A compatible card can therefore meet that minimum while Roblox’s documented Windows renderer is Direct3D 11. The requirement alone does not mean Roblox uses DirectX 12, nor does it mean a player needs to buy a DX12 card.

How to check graphics compatibility on Windows
If Roblox reports a graphics initialization or compatibility problem, Roblox’s hardware and operating-system requirements guidance recommends checking the graphics feature level with Windows’ dxdiag utility and updating the graphics driver.
- Open the Windows Start menu, search for dxdiag, and launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- Check the display information for the graphics feature levels supported by the device, and compare them with Roblox’s DirectX 10-or-higher feature-level requirement.
- If the device appears compatible but Roblox still has a graphics issue, check for an updated graphics driver using the graphics-card maker’s guidance.
Does Graphics Quality change the graphics API?
No. Roblox’s RenderSettings documentation treats graphics quality as a separate control, with automatic or manual quality selection. Changing Graphics Quality adjusts rendering quality behavior; it is not the same as selecting Direct3D 11, OpenGL, or another graphics backend.

Could Roblox add DirectX 12 later?
A March 28, 2026 Roblox Developer Forum post requests DirectX 12 support. A feature request is not an announcement of implementation or plans. Roblox’s published GraphicsMode list is the stronger reference for the documented options; consult it again if a future client or engine update changes the available modes.
