No dedicated Steam filter or hide-all switch for games that use generative AI is documented. Valve asks developers to disclose qualifying AI use, but Steam’s documented search filters use tags, and its content preferences cover categories such as violence or nudity—not AI use. If you want to avoid these games, check available AI disclosures on individual store pages; tags may help you narrow results but cannot reliably identify every AI-using game.
How does Steam identify games that use generative AI?
Steam has a developer-facing disclosure process in its Content Survey. Valve says the AI section concerns “the use of AI in creating content that ships with your game, and is consumed by players.” That focuses on AI-assisted content players encounter in the game, rather than providing a consumer-facing directory that can be searched or excluded as a category.

The survey separates qualifying use into two types. The distinction is useful when you review a game’s disclosure: one describes content made during development and included in the shipped game; the other describes content generated while the game is running.
Pre-generated AI content
Pre-generated content is created with AI assistance during development and ships with the game. It may include artwork, sound, narrative, localization, or other content consumed by players. The important point is that “pre-generated” describes when the content was created, not whether it is visible or important in the final game.

Live-generated AI content
Live-generated content is created with AI while the game is running. Valve’s survey requires developers to describe the guardrails they use to prevent illegal output for this category. That requirement is a disclosure about the developer’s approach; it is not a Steam setting players can use to disable live generation.
Valve also says its prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output “the same way we evaluate all non-AI content.” The review process and developer survey serve different purposes from a consumer filter: neither, as documented, lets you request that Steam hide every game involving generative AI.

Why can’t I just search Steam for AI games and exclude them?
Steam’s documented search controls are based on tags, not a verified AI-production field. Tags can help narrow a broad search, but they are not a complete or authoritative record of how a game’s content was made.
Valve says developers, players, and moderators can apply tags, and that tags influence search and recommendations. A tag may describe a genre, theme, or other characteristic; it is not guaranteed to identify AI-generated content. A game can therefore use AI without having a relevant tag, and a tag alone does not prove that the game used AI.

This is the difference between a disclosure and community metadata. The Content Survey is a developer disclosure mechanism for qualifying AI content. Tags are descriptive metadata that help organize Steam’s catalog. They do not have the same coverage or evidentiary purpose.
Do Steam’s content preferences include an AI setting?
Valve documents content preferences that let players filter or allow certain kinds of content, with violence and nudity given as examples. Its documentation does not list generative AI as a preference category.
Those preferences are intended for content categories and mature-content descriptors. They should not be treated as a general-purpose way to exclude games based on production methods. Even if you have adjusted your preferences for mature content, that does not establish that AI-using games will be hidden.
How can I avoid AI-generated games on Steam?
There is no documented global exclusion control, so the practical approach is to screen individual titles. Use broad search tools to find games that interest you, then examine available developer disclosures before deciding whether to buy or play.

- Narrow your search with tags. In Steam search, select relevant tags from the list beside the results. This helps reduce the catalog to genres or themes you want, but do not rely on tags as an AI-use filter.
- Open the individual game’s store page. Look for AI-related disclosure information. Valve’s survey covers qualifying content that ships with a game and is consumed by players, including pre-generated and live-generated uses.
- Read the disclosure in context. Note whether it describes content made during development or content generated during play. If the distinction matters to you, it can tell you what kind of use the developer reported.
- Use the information according to your own threshold. Some players may wish to avoid any game that reports AI-created content; others may only be concerned about live generation or particular kinds of content. Steam’s disclosure does not make that preference decision for you.
- Treat missing or informal metadata cautiously. A community tag—or the absence of one—is not proof either way. The available official documentation does not describe a complete, user-queryable inventory or a global exclusion option.
The available documentation does not specify a precise location or layout for the AI disclosure on every store page. For that reason, this is a title-by-title check rather than a guaranteed sequence of UI clicks that works identically for every listing.
How reliable are Steam’s available options?
The options differ in what they are for. The developer disclosure is the most relevant source when checking a particular game, while tags and content preferences solve different problems.

In practical terms, the disclosure is the most useful of these for evaluating an individual title, but it does not solve catalog-wide filtering. Tags can reduce search effort but are not proof. Content preferences should be used for their stated content categories, not as a substitute for an AI setting.
What should I make of a game with no visible AI disclosure?
Do not assume that the absence of a visible disclosure means Steam has certified that a game contains no AI-generated content. The official documentation establishes a developer survey process and its scope, but does not describe a complete consumer-facing database, a universal page placement, or a mechanism for auditing every title from the store interface.

Conversely, an AI-related tag or community discussion is not itself a Valve disclosure. If the distinction matters for a purchase, prioritize the information the developer has reported through Steam’s disclosure process where it is available, and treat user-applied metadata as a clue rather than confirmation.
What Steam’s AI disclosure does—and does not—mean
Steam’s process gives developers a way to report qualifying generative-AI use, and Valve distinguishes between content created before release and content generated during play. That is useful transparency at the individual-game level.

Does Steam show whether a game uses AI on its store page?
