EA’s Origin launcher is no longer supported. EA says Origin has shut down and directs PC and Mac players to the EA app instead. Your EA Account purchases are not automatically deleted: sign in to the EA app with the same account to find eligible games and download them.
The transition affects the launcher and its services—not every EA game. However, installed files, save data, Mac compatibility, third-party storefronts, offline play, and unofficial Linux setups each have important limitations.

What happened to Origin?
Origin was EA’s PC and Mac launcher and storefront. EA replaced it with the EA app, which is now the company’s supported desktop launcher for Windows and Mac.
EA’s current support documentation says Origin has shut down. It does not establish a definitive shutdown day in the page text available for this update, so claims that it shut down on a particular April date should be treated cautiously. The important current fact is that Origin is no longer the supported route for accessing EA games.

This is not a blanket shutdown of EA games, EA Accounts, or all related online services. It is a launcher transition.
What Origin users should do now
- Open EA’s official EA app download and installation page.
- Choose EA app for PC or EA app for Mac.
- Select Download, install the application, and launch it.
- Sign in with the same EA Account you used in Origin.
- Open Library and look for your games.
- Choose a title and select the install or download option.
- Test the game and confirm that its saves, downloadable content, settings, mods, and controller support are present.
If the game is already installed, do not immediately delete its folder. Try to point the EA app to the existing installation location or use its verification or repair process where available. This may help you avoid a large redownload, although EA does not guarantee that every existing installation will be detected automatically.
Are games and DLC purchased through Origin preserved?
EA says purchases are linked to the EA Account and that games purchased through Origin can be downloaded through the EA app when you sign in with that same account. That means you should not buy a second copy merely because the new app initially fails to display a title.

- Account entitlements: These are expected to follow the correct EA Account.
- Installed files: Existing files may remain on your drive, but the EA app may need to locate, verify, repair, or reinstall them.
- DLC and expansions: They should be associated with the relevant account entitlement, but check that you are using the account that originally purchased or claimed them.
- Save files: Saves are game-specific. They may be local, cloud-synchronized, or tied to another launcher. Back up local saves before uninstalling, moving, or repairing anything.
- Mods and custom content: Back up these folders separately. A launcher repair or reinstall can change or remove modified files.
Before migration, copy local save folders, custom content, screenshots, configuration files, and—if avoiding a redownload matters—large game folders to another location. Save paths vary by game, operating system, installation method, and user profile, so there is no single universal folder to back up.
Windows: installation and troubleshooting
EA’s installation guidance directs Windows users to the EA app download page and requires a supported operating system. EA also notes that individual games have their own minimum requirements; meeting the launcher requirement does not guarantee that a particular game will run.

- Restart the app and sign in again, allowing time for the library to synchronize.
- Check library filters and search for the title by name.
- Run the EA app as administrator on Windows.
- Check your network connection and EA service status.
- Allow the following EA processes through your antivirus or firewall if security software is blocking the app:

Mac: what changes?
EA provides an EA app for Mac, but the Mac migration is not identical to Windows. Sign in with the same EA Account used in Origin, then check the Library for titles compatible with macOS.
EA specifically says Mac users can download only games compatible with Mac. A Windows-only game does not become a macOS game because its entitlement appears in your EA Account.

/Library/Application Support/Electronic Arts/EA appMac hardware architecture, macOS versions, and game support differ by title. Check the individual game’s requirements before assuming that an Origin purchase can be installed on your Mac.
Games bought through Steam or Epic
A purchase made through Steam or the Epic Games Store normally remains associated with that storefront for installation, refunds, and ownership records. It does not necessarily become an EA app purchase.
At the same time, many EA games bought from a third-party store still use EA authentication or an EA launcher during startup. If Steam or Epic asks you to sign in or link an EA Account, use the account associated with the game. Installing a second copy through the EA app is not a guaranteed solution.

Linux, Steam Deck, Lutris, and Wine
EA’s reviewed support documentation lists PC and Mac, not a native Linux EA app. Linux users therefore should not treat Wine, Proton, Lutris, or SteamOS as officially supported replacements for Origin.
Community compatibility setups may continue to work for individual games, but service changes can break them. For example, a Lutris issue documents account and library failures after Origin endpoints began returning an Origin-shutdown response. That is community evidence, not an EA compatibility policy or a guarantee that every Linux installation will fail.
Steam Deck owners should ask two separate questions: whether the game is sold through Steam, and whether it still requires EA authentication or launcher functionality. A Steam listing alone does not guarantee a straightforward SteamOS experience.
What about offline play?
There is no universal offline rule for every EA game. Some titles can be authorized and played offline after setup; others may require periodic or continuing online checks, updates, multiplayer services, or DRM authentication.
Before traveling or losing connectivity, launch and authenticate the game while online, then verify the title’s own offline mode. Do not assume that the end of Origin means either that all offline play has disappeared or that every game will continue working offline.
If your games are missing from the EA app
- Check the account first. An email address, console-linked identity, or family member’s account may be different from the one used for the purchase.
- Sign out and back in. Restart the EA app and allow synchronization to finish.
- Check compatibility. A Windows-only title will not appear as an installable Mac game, and unsupported operating systems can prevent access.
- Check the purchase platform. Steam and Epic entitlements may remain managed through those storefronts.
- Preserve existing files. Do not delete game folders, saves, mods, or configuration files while diagnosing the problem.
- Check security software. Firewall or antivirus rules can block installation, authentication, or background services.
- Consider service interruptions. A temporary EA outage can look like a missing library.
- Contact EA Help. Have order records, receipts, account details, and any relevant linked-platform information ready.
