Does Tick Speed Affect Animal Breeding in Minecraft?

Minecraft’s randomTickSpeed changes random block updates, not animal breeding. Overall tick-rate mods or server settings are separate and may behave differently.

No—if you mean Minecraft’s randomTickSpeed gamerule, changing it does not directly make animals breed faster. It controls random updates to blocks, while breeding is driven by mob behavior and cooldowns. A mod or server setting that changes the overall game tick rate is a different matter; the effect of those changes depends on the software and is not established here.

What does randomTickSpeed change?

It controls how frequently random ticks occur for blocks. Those updates affect things such as crop growth and fire spreading, not the breeding behavior of animal entities. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes random-ticking blocks as triggered according to the gamerule: random-ticking block reference. That page notes the documented block component is deprecated in the latest versions; its description is useful for understanding the concept, not as current advice for authoring a block.

The gamerule’s default depends on edition: Microsoft lists randomTickSpeed as 1 for Bedrock, while the community-maintained Minecraft Wiki reports 3 for Java Edition. These are edition-specific defaults, not numbers to compare as if they represented the same rate. Microsoft’s Bedrock gamerule reference; Minecraft Wiki’s tick reference.

Why doesn’t it speed up breeding?

Breeding is handled through mob behavior and breeding timers rather than random block updates. Microsoft’s Bedrock reference describes minecraft:behavior.breed as behavior that allows a mob to breed. Its speed_multiplier parameter changes the mob’s movement speed while that AI goal runs; it is not a breeding-speed control. The documentation does not identify randomTickSpeed as a breeding setting. Bedrock breed behavior reference.

  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

What if you mean the overall game or server tick rate?

randomTickSpeed and an overall tick-rate change are not interchangeable. The former targets random block updates. Mods, plugins, custom entity definitions, or server software that changes game ticking or entity update scheduling may have different effects. The cited documentation does not establish how those custom setups affect breeding, so check the documentation for the specific mod or server software rather than assuming the gamerule’s behavior applies.

What to check if breeding seems stalled

Changing randomTickSpeed is not a supported fix for an animal breeding cooldown. Check whether the animals can breed, have the correct food and conditions, are receiving entity updates, and have cleared their cooldown. Exact requirements and timers vary by mob and edition, so verify the relevant mob’s current edition-specific documentation rather than applying one animal’s timer to all animals.

For example, the Minecraft Wiki’s bee entry gives bees a five-minute parent cooldown and says growth and breeding cooldown timers pause while bees work in a hive. That is a bee-specific example, not a universal animal cooldown. Minecraft Wiki’s bee reference; for general orientation, see its breeding reference.
