No. Skaven are an official faction in Warhammer Age of Sigmar and have roots in Warhammer Fantasy, but they are not a standard faction in Warhammer 40,000. A fan-made or converted Skaven force can still be used as a hobby project or, where the players agree, as proxies in a casual game.
Which Warhammer setting has Skaven?
- Warhammer 40,000 is a far-future science-fiction setting with its own factions. The official 40K army and setting pages do not list Skaven as a faction. See the official Warhammer 40,000 pages.
- Warhammer Age of Sigmar is a fantasy setting in the Mortal Realms, and Skaven are an official faction there. See the official Age of Sigmar pages.
- Warhammer Fantasy is the older fantasy setting in which Skaven have a long history. Games Workshop describes their history and return in Age of Sigmar in its Skaven history article.
Games Workshop’s Golden Demon FAQ reinforces that these are separate settings for competition entries: “No. Entries should represent a single universe or setting.” The FAQ uses an Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000 crossover as its example; this is event guidance, not a universal rule for casual games. Can you use Skaven miniatures in a 40K game?
You can convert Skaven miniatures into a homebrew 40K force or ask to use them as proxies, but that does not make Skaven an official 40K faction. Agree on what each model represents before a casual game. For a tournament or other organized event, check that event’s rules; Games Workshop’s Golden Demon guidance, for example, asks entries to represent one universe or setting.
Where should you look for official Skaven rules and models?
Look to Age of Sigmar rather than 40K. The official Age of Sigmar battle profiles published in July 2025 list Battletome: Skaven; check the current edition and the relevant official materials before buying or playing, since game rules and availability can change. Find official Age of Sigmar downloads.
