He said the game is smooth overall, while explaining that the team prioritized fun and playability during those large-scale moments. His comments were reported from a pre-release interview; they are not a quantified test of the final retail game.
What the director said about performance
Nintendo Life reproduced Takahashi’s response to La Vanguardia, and TechRadar also reported the comments. Takahashi described two factors: deliberate hit-stop and slow-motion effects that emphasize impacts, and the substantial environmental changes created by the game’s voxel-based destruction.
“There are several factors to consider. First, we intentionally used effects like hit-stop and slow motion to emphasize impacts. Second, because we use voxel technology, there are times when there are major changes and destruction in the environment. We’re aware that performance may drop slightly at these times. However, as you say, overall the game is smooth, and at points where large-scale changes occur, we prioritized fun and playability.”

Why destruction is demanding
Nintendo’s official Ask the Developer, Vol. 19, Part 2 describes the technical challenge behind Bananza’s destructible voxel terrain. The developers said voxel environments require significant memory and processing resources, particularly as the terrain grows in three dimensions and many parts of it can change at once.
The team began developing the game on Nintendo Switch and started considering a move to Switch 2 around 2021 after running into technical challenges. Nintendo’s developers said the newer system’s additional memory and processing capacity let them pursue more destructible terrain, more objects, and ideas that had seemed too demanding before. For scale, they offered an illustrative example: doubling a voxel volume’s width, height, and depth requires eight times the data. That example explains how the workload can grow; it is not a measurement of Bananza’s actual memory use.

How to interpret Nintendo’s 60 fps statement
In the same developer interview, Nintendo’s team said they saw the game run at 60 fps when trying it on Switch 2. That is a development-team statement, not an independent benchmark of the released game or a guarantee that every scene holds a locked 60 fps. It is consistent with Takahashi’s separate acknowledgement that performance may drop slightly during some large-scale environmental changes.
Nintendo notes that its Ask the Developer interview was translated from Japanese and conducted before release. The interview’s 60 fps observation and Takahashi’s reported comments therefore describe development-era impressions, not a frame-by-frame assessment of the retail build.

What the comments establish—and what they do not
- They establish: Takahashi acknowledged possible slight drops during major environmental changes and destruction, while characterizing the overall game as smooth and emphasizing fun and playability.
- They do not establish: how often drops occur, how long they last, their measured severity, or whether every retail copy behaves the same way.
- They do not announce: a patch commitment or a separate accessory that fixes performance.
Nintendo identifies Kazuya Takahashi as one of the game’s directors in its Ask the Developer, Vol. 19, Part 1. The official pre-release page listed Donkey Kong Bananza as a Nintendo Switch 2 game with a planned July 17, 2025 launch date and a US regular price of $69.99; those are historical page details, not confirmation of current availability or pricing.
