DOOM Eternal PC Settings: Tips to Tune Performance and Fix Crashes

Match your DOOM Eternal resolution and preset to Bethesda’s published targets, then update drivers, tune settings and troubleshoot crashes methodically.

For a smoother DOOM Eternal session, first match your resolution, graphics preset and frame-rate goal to Bethesda’s published hardware targets. Then update the game and graphics drivers, lower settings if the game is unstable, and check overlays, files and laptop GPU routing in that order. Treat those targets as vendor guidance, not a promise of performance on every PC.

Choose a target before changing settings

Bethesda publishes separate targets for standard rendering and ray tracing. Compare your PC with the table that matches the mode you intend to use; ray-tracing requirements are not a substitute for standard-rendering requirements. Bethesda’s support pages do not display publication dates, so use these as published configuration targets rather than current benchmark results.

Mode and target Bethesda’s listed system memory and storage GPU examples from Bethesda
Standard rendering: 1080p, 60 FPS, Low Quality 8GB RAM; 50GB storage GTX 1050 Ti (4GB), GTX 1060 (3GB), GTX 1650 (4GB), Radeon R9 280 (3GB), R9 290 (4GB), RX 470 (4GB)
Standard rendering: 1440p, 60 FPS, High Quality 8GB RAM; 50GB storage GTX 1080 (8GB), RTX 2060 (6GB), Radeon Vega 56 (8GB)
Standard rendering: 2160p, 60 FPS, or 1440p, 120 FPS, Ultra-Nightmare 16GB RAM; 50GB storage RTX 2080 Ti (11GB) or Radeon VII (16GB)
Ray tracing: 1080p, 60 FPS, Low Quality 16GB RAM; 80GB storage RTX 2060 (6GB) or Radeon RX 6700 XT
Ray tracing: 1440p, 60 FPS, High Quality 16GB RAM; 80GB storage NVIDIA RTX-series cards with 8GB or more VRAM, or Radeon RX 6800
Ray tracing: 2160p, 60 FPS, Ultra-Nightmare 32GB RAM; 80GB storage RTX 3090, RTX 3080 Ti, or RX 6900 XT
Ray tracing: 1440p, 120 FPS, Ultra-Nightmare Not stated in Bethesda’s ray-tracing target RTX cards with 11GB or more VRAM, or Radeon RX 6800 XT

These are Bethesda’s named examples and target labels, not independently verified frame-rate measurements. Bethesda also lists standard-rendering examples for 1080p High Quality, including GTX 1060 (6GB), GTX 970 (4GB), and RX 480 (8GB); its GTX 970 note says to set Texture Quality to Medium. See Bethesda’s standard PC requirements and ray-tracing requirements.

Use a measured tuning sequence

  1. Set your goal. Decide whether you want a particular resolution, preset and frame rate, and whether you want standard rendering or ray tracing. Compare against that mode’s target above rather than changing several options at once.
  2. Update the basics. Bethesda advises checking minimum requirements and graphics drivers. For ray tracing, update the game and graphics drivers before enabling the option. Its support instructions may include historical driver-version thresholds; do not treat those old version numbers as current recommendations.
  3. Reduce demanding settings if the game is unstable. If high presets lead to crashes, try a lower preset. Bethesda specifically reports that some NVIDIA RTX systems with 8GB of system RAM may crash when settings are changed to Ultra, Nightmare or Ultra-Nightmare; its suggested responses for that case are to use High settings or have at least 16GB system RAM. That advice addresses the described configuration, not every crash.
  4. Test overlays and file integrity. For performance trouble, Bethesda suggests disabling the Steam Overlay and verifying the game files through Steam. It also notes that broadcasting through the Steam Overlay has been reported as a possible cause of freezes. Change and test one item at a time so you can identify whether it affected the problem.
  5. Check laptop GPU routing and power. If your laptop has NVIDIA graphics, make sure the game is assigned to the high-performance NVIDIA GPU when that option is available, and play while plugged in with a high-performance power plan. The exact controls vary by GPU, software version and laptop configuration.
  6. Enable ray tracing only after checking the prerequisites. Confirm compatible hardware and at least 16GB system RAM, update the game and driver, then select Ray Tracing under Video Options. Bethesda warns that less than 16GB RAM can cause performance problems or crashes.

How do I get DOOM Eternal to run better on my laptop’s NVIDIA GPU?

First check whether the game is using the discrete NVIDIA GPU rather than integrated graphics, and whether the laptop is limiting performance to save battery. Bethesda’s support guidance recommends choosing the high-performance NVIDIA GPU for the game where available and using the high-performance power plan while plugged in. Bethesda’s laptop instructions describe the relevant NVIDIA Control Panel program settings; labels can differ among software versions and systems.

Do not assume that a laptop’s dedicated GPU is active simply because it is installed. If the setting is unavailable, consult the laptop maker’s graphics or power controls. Bethesda states in its PC troubleshooting guidance that “Integrated Graphics options are not supported.”

What can I do if DOOM Eternal is crashing on PC?

Start with the likely mismatch between settings and hardware: check Bethesda’s minimum requirements, update the GPU driver, and lower a high preset. If the crash occurs when selecting Ultra, Nightmare or Ultra-Nightmare on an RTX PC with 8GB system RAM, Bethesda specifically recommends High settings or at least 16GB RAM. Next, test with Steam Overlay disabled and verify the game files in Steam. Bethesda’s PC crash and stutter troubleshooting covers these steps.

If the game still crashes, note what changed just before the problem began—such as enabling ray tracing or increasing a preset—and return that setting to a less demanding value for a controlled test. The support guidance does not establish that one fix will resolve every crash.

What ray tracing and DLSS support tells you—and what it does not

NVIDIA announced on June 22, 2021 that DOOM Eternal would add ray-traced reflections and DLSS on June 29, 2021. That announcement provides feature-launch history, not evidence of current driver performance on a particular PC. Check the game’s current Video Options and your supported hardware rather than assuming every configuration behaves the same. Bethesda’s ray-tracing targets specify substantially different memory, storage and GPU examples from its standard-rendering targets.
