Yes. On a graphical Raspberry Pi OS or Debian desktop, install the Chocolate Doom source port and provide game data: for a free, complete Doom-compatible game, install Chocolate Doom with Freedoom using sudo apt update && sudo apt install chocolate-doom freedoom. The engine and the game files are separate, so installing the engine alone does not give you the commercial Doom campaigns. The same basic approach works on Debian-based amd64 mini PCs; other Linux distributions need their own package-manager instructions.

This guide separates the software, game-data, hardware and troubleshooting decisions so you can use equipment you already own, avoid unauthorized WAD downloads and choose a port that matches your desired level of authenticity or mod support.

What do you need to run Doom on a Raspberry Pi or mini PC?

You need a compatible computer, a source port, game data, and a graphical session for the ordinary desktop setup described here. A source port is the program that runs Doom; an IWAD is the base-game data file containing the levels and assets. The two are not interchangeable. Debian’s Trixie package description puts it plainly: “All Chocolate game engines require game data to play.”

  • Computer: A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS Desktop, or a Debian-based mini PC with a desktop environment. Raspberry Pi OS currently uses Debian Trixie. A configured Debian-based amd64 desktop is also a supported target for the Debian amd64 package.
  • Source port: Chocolate Doom is a straightforward starting point for a classic Doom experience. Debian Trixie lists Chocolate Doom version 3.1.0-1 for arm64, armhf, amd64 and other architectures; that is a package version, not a performance measurement.
  • Game data: Use Freedoom for a free, complete Doom-compatible game, or supply an IWAD you are entitled to use for the relevant original Doom or Doom II campaign.
  • Display and input: Use the computer’s local graphical desktop for this walkthrough. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is command-line-only, so it is not the uncomplicated desktop route.
  • Storage and power: A new Raspberry Pi installation needs boot storage and a suitable power supply. An existing computer that already boots a supported graphical Debian-based system does not need new hardware just for this experiment.

This is a documented installation procedure, not a performance test. No trustworthy Pi-versus-mini-PC frame-rate figure is established here, and a particular low-power board’s graphics performance or output over a remote SSH session is not guaranteed.

How do I install Doom on Raspberry Pi OS?

On a Raspberry Pi with Raspberry Pi OS Desktop, install Chocolate Doom and Freedoom from the configured APT repositories, then launch the game with the installed IWAD. An existing, working Debian-based desktop can skip the imaging step.

1. Prepare Raspberry Pi OS Desktop

  1. For a new installation, open Raspberry Pi Imager and select the actual Raspberry Pi board, Raspberry Pi OS and boot storage you intend to use. Selecting the board model matters because the image and boot support are board-specific.
  2. Choose Raspberry Pi OS Desktop for the simplest graphical game setup. Lite provides a command line only; it is not the desktop environment used by these steps. A Lite installation can be useful for a deliberately headless project, but it is not a drop-in replacement for a local desktop game session.
  3. Boot into the graphical session, connect the display and input devices you intend to use, and open a terminal there. The terminal can be used for installation even if you later start the game from the application menu.
  4. If you already have a Debian-based desktop on a mini PC, confirm that it is running normally and that you can open a local terminal. Do not re-image a working system merely to follow the Raspberry Pi-specific imaging step.

2. Install the source port and free game data

Run these commands in the terminal:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install chocolate-doom freedoom

The first command refreshes the package information available from the machine’s configured repositories. The second asks APT to install the Chocolate Doom engine and the Freedoom package. Debian Trixie lists Chocolate Doom 3.1.0-1 and Freedoom 0.13.0-2; package versions can vary with repository state and distribution updates, so treat those as the Debian Trixie listings checked in 2026, not version guarantees for every image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

APT may ask for your account password because installing system packages requires administrator privileges. Read the package summary before confirming so you can see what will be installed and how much storage it requires. If APT says a package cannot be found, check the repositories configured for that operating system and search its package catalog. Debian’s listing does not prove that every Raspberry Pi OS derivative or other Linux distribution has identical repositories enabled. Do not assume an APT command applies unchanged outside an APT-based system.

3. Start the game

If the installed Freedoom IWAD is discovered automatically, launch chocolate-doom from the terminal or desktop application menu. To specify game data directly, use the documented command form and substitute the real file path and name:

chocolate-doom -iwad /path/to/your/iwad.wad

The example path is illustrative, not a real file to copy literally. The IWAD must exist at the path you enter, and the filename’s spelling must match. Paths containing spaces should be quoted in the shell, for example chocolate-doom -iwad "/home/user/My Games/doom.wad". Keep your legally obtained IWAD in a location your account can read.

For controls or display configuration, run chocolate-doom-setup; Debian’s arm64 package lists that executable. Use it to select keyboard bindings, joystick or controller settings and display options instead of assuming the defaults suit your monitor. Configuration is separate from the game-data file, so changing controls does not repair a missing IWAD.

4. Confirm the basic installation

Start with Freedoom or one known-good IWAD before adding mods. A clean launch establishes that the executable, display session and base data are working. Once that works, close the game normally and add one change at a time. This makes it easier to identify whether a later problem comes from an add-on, a controller setting or a path typo.

Do I need a Doom WAD?

Yes. The source port needs base-game data to run. The IWAD is the main game-data file; a PWAD is an additional file, commonly used for a compatible add-on, that is loaded alongside a base IWAD. Installing an engine package does not install id Software’s commercial levels, textures, sounds or other copyrighted assets.

Use Freedoom for a free, complete game

Freedoom is not a free copy of id Software’s commercial Doom. It is a separate, free/libre Doom-compatible game with its own content. The Freedoom project describes its aim as providing “all the content needed to form a complete, entirely free/libre game for the Doom engine.” Installing the Freedoom package alongside Chocolate Doom is the easiest route in the commands above if you do not already have commercial Doom game data.

Because Freedoom is its own game, maps, names and presentation can differ from the original campaigns. That is expected, not evidence that Chocolate Doom failed to install. If you specifically want the original Doom or Doom II episodes, you need the corresponding original IWAD instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use original Doom or Doom II data only when you have it legitimately

For the commercial campaigns, supply the corresponding Doom or Doom II IWAD that you have obtained legitimately. A legitimate purchase or an existing copy you are entitled to use is the appropriate source. Open-source engine code does not make commercial game assets free, and a random WAD download should not be treated as authorized game data. Do not link readers to unverified WAD mirrors or imply that a source port includes the original campaign.

Debian also lists doom-wad-shareware, which provides limited original Doom shareware data. Debian classifies that package in its non-free section, and whether APT can see it depends on the repositories configured on the system. Shareware is limited data, not the complete commercial campaign, so it should not be presented as equivalent to the full retail game.

Load a compatible add-on

If an add-on calls for a PWAD, Chocolate Doom’s documented command form places the base IWAD first and the add-on after -file:

chocolate-doom -iwad /path/to/base.wad -file /path/to/addon.wad

Replace both example paths with the actual files. An add-on generally depends on a particular base game and port behavior; check its own documentation for the required IWAD and compatibility. This command form describes how to pass files to the engine; it is not a compatibility claim for any particular add-on. If a mod does not load, first run the base IWAD alone, then verify the add-on filename and required game version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Doom port should you choose?

For a new Raspberry Pi OS or Debian desktop setup, Chocolate Doom is the uncomplicated default. Other choices make sense when you already use RetroPie, need particular mod features or are following current Debian package names.

Option Best fit What to know
Chocolate Doom Classic Doom play on Raspberry Pi OS or Debian Requires game data. Debian Trixie lists version 3.1.0-1 for arm64, armhf, amd64 and other architectures. Its goal is an original-experience-oriented presentation rather than modern enhanced rendering.
RetroPie lr-prboom People already using RetroPie who want its Ports and controller-oriented workflow RetroPie’s documented setup installs it from Optional Packages. Its instructions cover shareware, commercial and Freedoom IWADs. After installation, shareware Doom appears in Ports after an EmulationStation restart.
DSDA-Doom Debian users whose instructions refer to the old prboom-plus package name On Debian Trixie, prboom-plus is transitional and points to DSDA-Doom, not the historical standalone PrBoom+ engine. Treat that package relationship as different from RetroPie’s separately documented lr-prboom workflow.
GZDoom Users who need enhanced rendering or broad mod support and have a suitable computer RetroPie describes it as more performance-demanding and better suited to a PC or more powerful single-board computer. It is not the safest default for an unspecified low-power device.

Choose by the experience and mod requirements you need, the controls you want to configure and the graphics demands your hardware can handle rather than by an unsupported frame-rate promise. Chocolate Doom is the clearest first diagnostic because its package and launch path are simple. RetroPie is preferable when EmulationStation integration and console-style controller management matter more than a conventional desktop workflow. GZDoom may be the right choice for advanced effects or mods, but its greater demands make the hardware question more important.

How do I troubleshoot a failed launch?

Start with the game-data path and the environment in which you launched the program. A missing or misspelled IWAD path is a direct reason the specified launch command cannot find the base game.

  • “IWAD not found” or a similar data error: Confirm that the file exists and that the path and filename in -iwad are exact. If you are relying on automatic discovery, try specifying the IWAD explicitly. Check that you selected Doom rather than Doom II data when an add-on requires one particular base game.
  • Package unavailable: Check the distribution’s configured repositories and package search. A Debian package listing does not establish that every derivative image enables the same sources. On a non-Debian distribution, use its documented package manager rather than translating the APT command by guesswork.
  • Launch problem that needs narrowing down: Chocolate Doom documents -window and -nosound as options for a focused diagnostic. They may help isolate a display or sound issue, but neither is a universal repair. If windowed mode works, investigate the desktop display configuration; if disabling sound changes the result, inspect audio output separately.
  • Controls or display need adjustment: Open chocolate-doom-setup to configure them, rather than assuming the defaults match your setup. Verify that a controller is visible to the operating system before blaming the game.
  • Using a command-line-only install or remote terminal: The ordinary walkthrough assumes a local graphical session. Do not assume that a remote SSH shell or Raspberry Pi OS Lite will provide working local game graphics. Remote display forwarding is a separate configuration problem and is not established by these commands.
  • A mod fails while the base game works: Return to the IWAD-only command, then check the PWAD’s required base game, port and load order. Add one file at a time so an incompatible add-on is distinguishable from an installation fault.
  • Different results after an upgrade: Record the package and port you are using, then consult the current package and port documentation. Package versions and RetroPie Optional Package choices can change independently of your hardware.

Should you buy a Raspberry Pi for Doom?

Usually, start with a compatible computer you already own. Doom’s modest reputation does not establish that every board, operating system, display setup or remote session will work the same way, and no sourced performance figure here justifies buying a new machine solely for a promised frame rate.

If you are building a new Raspberry Pi 5 setup for broader use, the board is only one part of it: you also need boot storage and appropriate power. Raspberry Pi specifies a microSD slot on Pi 5 and recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply. Its official 27W USB-C Power Supply is specified at 5.1V and 5A; that is the supply’s electrical rating, not Doom’s power draw. Cooling or an enclosure is optional for the setup decision described here. Raspberry Pi sells a Pi 5 case with an integrated fan, and its Pi 4 case does not fit Pi 5. Those Raspberry Pi-specific accessories should not be assumed to fit other mini PCs.

For a new board, choose compatible boot storage and power for that board. A microSD card is the specified Pi 5 boot-storage option in this setup, while a mini PC may use an entirely different storage device. Match the power supply and enclosure to the exact computer rather than transferring Pi 5 accessory advice to another board. Existing hardware that already boots a suitable graphical Debian-based desktop does not need to be replaced just to try the software route above.

Can I play Doom for free?

You can play Freedoom for free because it is a complete, separate Doom-compatible game. Debian’s doom-wad-shareware package provides limited original shareware data and is classified in the non-free section; shareware is not the full commercial campaign.

Will Doom run on a low-power mini PC?

A Debian-based amd64 mini PC can use the Debian Chocolate Doom package, but compatibility and graphics output vary by system. Start with the computer you already have and use the local graphical session; do not infer performance from a board’s reputation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run Doom over SSH and see it on my Pi’s screen?

Do not assume that launching the game from a remote SSH shell will produce local graphics. The documented desktop route here uses a terminal opened in the Pi’s graphical session; remote display behavior depends on configuration not established by these instructions.

Does the Debian package name prboom-plus install the old PrBoom+ engine?

Not on Debian Trixie: that package is transitional and points to DSDA-Doom. RetroPie’s separately documented lr-prboom option is a different route, not the same package.

Can I use a Doom add-on without the original base game?

The documented Chocolate Doom command loads a PWAD with -file after an IWAD supplied with -iwad. An add-on file does not replace the need for base game data, and its own compatibility requirements still apply.

Is GZDoom the best choice for a Raspberry Pi?

Not as a blanket recommendation. RetroPie describes GZDoom as more performance-demanding and better suited to a PC or more powerful single-board computer. Choose it only when your hardware and the mod’s rendering requirements justify it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the simplest legal setup, use a local Raspberry Pi OS Desktop or Debian desktop, install Chocolate Doom and Freedoom with APT, and launch with an explicit IWAD path when needed. Use legitimately obtained Doom data for the original campaigns, choose RetroPie’s lr-prboom only when you want its separate controller-focused workflow, and treat GZDoom as a more demanding option. Existing compatible hardware is the sensible first test; a new Pi 5 also requires matching boot storage, power and optional cooling.
