Players have reported several possible workarounds, but none is a confirmed fix for every case.
First, identify what is missing
Dota 2’s Hero Build Panel shows skill and item recommendations, including your own builds, subscribed builds, and a selection of popular builds. Valve’s Hero Builds overview explains how builds are created, published, and used in-game.
This is different from Steam Guides: those are longer-form community articles found through the Guides tab in a game’s Steam Community hub, as described in Steam Support’s guide.
- The panel is missing: You cannot find the in-game Hero Build Panel.
- The list is empty: The panel opens, but builds are not listed.
- One guide will not load: Other builds or online features may work.
- The panel spins indefinitely: The content does not appear to finish loading.
These symptoms have appeared in player discussions, including reports about missing non-default builds and a Dota Plus guide panel that keeps loading. Check that the build is available to you
A build created by someone else needs to be published and available through Steam Community before you can subscribe to it. Valve says published builds can be discovered there, while the in-game panel can show subscribed and popular builds.
- Look for the build through the game’s Steam Community pages. Steam Support’s Steam Guides instructions describe where to find community guides; remember that Steam Guides and in-game Hero Builds are separate features.
- Confirm that the specific Hero Build is published and that you have subscribed to it if you want it in your subscribed builds.
- Return to Dota 2 and check the Hero Build Panel again.
If only one build is absent, start with that build’s availability and subscription. If builds for many heroes are absent, a broader client or connection issue becomes more plausible, though the available sources do not establish a single diagnosis.

Check Steam and Dota 2 connectivity
If other online features in Steam or Dota 2 are failing too, treat the guide problem as part of a wider connection symptom rather than assuming the build itself is broken. Steam Support’s Dota 2 Network/Connectivity Issues page is the official route for connection troubleshooting. Steam notes that recurring connection problems across games, or with Dota 2 and Steam, can point to a connection issue.
If the problem persists alongside broad connection failures, use that Steam support flow. The reviewed official support pages do not offer a guide-specific diagnosis or bug-report path.

Try download-related checks cautiously
Some players have reported that changing Steam download restrictions or enabling background downloads made guides appear. A 2023 community troubleshooting discussion includes these suggestions. They are anecdotal—not an official, verified guide-loading fix.
If you try a download-setting change, use Steam’s own client controls and note the original setting so you can restore it. If the symptom does not change, do not assume the setting was the cause.

Community workarounds: cache or resubscribe
Players have also suggested clearing Steam’s download cache or unsubscribing from and resubscribing to a build. These steps are not confirmed by Valve as fixes for Hero Build loading and may not help on your client version. Treat them as optional community suggestions, not required repairs; use Steam’s own controls and avoid repeating changes that make no difference.

Do not subscribe to Dota Plus solely to try to restore a missing community Hero Build. Valve’s Dota Plus page describes Plus Assistant recommendations for hero selection and item building, but does not say that Plus is required to view community builds or that it repairs guide loading.
