If double-clicking only selects an item or appears to do nothing, start by slowing Windows’ double-click speed. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings > Buttons; in Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options. Move Double-click speed one step toward slower, select OK, and try opening a folder. If that does not help, check whether File Explorer is set to single-click opening, test the mouse on another computer or test another mouse on this PC, then repair Explorer or file associations according to which items fail.
Why won’t double-click open my files or folders?
Windows normally uses a double-click to open folders, programs, and documents in the File Explorer file pane. A failure can therefore come from several different layers: Windows may not recognize the two clicks as close enough together, File Explorer may be configured to open items with one click, the mouse or its connection may be missing clicks, Explorer itself may be malfunctioning, or a particular file extension may have a broken default application.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe pattern of the failure is the quickest clue. If every folder and file ignores a double-click, begin with mouse timing and hardware checks. If one click opens items, inspect the Explorer click preference. If folders open but PDFs, text files, or another extension do not, repair that extension’s default app instead of replacing the mouse. If File Explorer will not start at all, use its recovery path.
How do I slow the double-click speed in Windows 11 or Windows 10?
Microsoft identifies a double-click speed that is set too fast as a cause of Windows failing to recognize the action. Moving the slider only one step toward slower is usually enough and is reversible.

- Open the mouse settings for your Windows version.
- Windows 11: Select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings.
- Windows 10: Select Start > Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options.
- On the Buttons tab, find Double-click speed.
- Move the slider one step toward Slow.
- Select OK, then double-click a folder in File Explorer.
Do not move the control all the way to the slowest position unless testing shows that you need it. The goal is to give Windows a wider timing window without making intentional double-clicks feel awkward. If folders open after this change, the mouse was probably sending two clicks that were too far apart for the previous setting; no replacement hardware or Windows repair is required.
Why does a single click open items, or why does a double-click only select them?
File Explorer has a separate preference for opening items with one click or with two. Confirm that it is set to Double-click to open an item (single-click to select). A single click opening an item points to this preference, not necessarily to a defective mouse.
- Open File Explorer.
- Open Folder Options (also labeled File Explorer Options on some Windows versions).
- In the click-behavior choices, select Double-click to open an item (single-click to select).
- Apply the setting and test a folder.
This check addresses a different symptom from a double-click that does nothing. With the single-click option enabled, the first click is intentionally treated as the open command, so selecting an item and then double-clicking it can feel inconsistent. Restore the double-click option if you want the conventional Windows behavior.
How can I tell whether the mouse is causing the problem?
Use substitution tests before buying anything. Clean around the left button, reconnect the USB cable or wireless receiver, and try the mouse on another computer. Then connect a known-good mouse to the affected PC.

- If the original mouse misses double-clicks on another computer, its button switch, receiver, cable, or driver is implicated.
- If a second mouse works normally on the affected PC, the original mouse or its connection is the likely fault.
- If both mice show the same behavior, continue with Windows settings and Explorer checks rather than assuming a hardware failure.
These tests isolate the fault; they are practical troubleshooting steps rather than a guarantee that Windows has identified a particular component. A basic USB wired mouse can serve as an inexpensive known-good test or replacement, but it is a conditional purchase after the free settings checks, not a required fix for every case.
What should I do if File Explorer itself will not open?
If the taskbar icon does nothing, or Explorer will not start even though the mouse works elsewhere, treat the issue as an Explorer or Windows problem rather than a double-click timing problem.

- If Explorer still will not start, work through Microsoft’s System Maintenance and System File Checker guidance.
- Use Microsoft’s Automatic Repair guidance when the earlier steps do not restore Explorer. Automatic Repair is intended to attempt repairs such as registry corruption.
- Consider a Windows reset or other recovery option only after the less disruptive steps, and back up important data first.
Explorer recovery is broader and potentially more disruptive than changing a mouse slider. Keep it as a later branch unless Explorer fails to open at all or other Windows shell functions are also failing.
Why do only some file types refuse to open?
When folders open normally and only one extension fails, the mouse and Explorer click settings are unlikely to be the cause. Repair the association for the affected type in Default apps.

- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the affected extension, such as
.pdfor.txt. - Select the intended application for that file type.
- Return to File Explorer and double-click a file of that type.
Windows supports associations by file type, link type, or application. Changing the association affects what launches after the file is opened; it does not change the mouse’s double-click timing. If several unrelated extensions fail while folders remain usable, review each affected association before attempting system recovery.
Which fix should I try first?
The table below orders the common fixes by what they affect, their cost and risk, and the diagnostic information they provide.
| Fix | Scope | Cost | Risk | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slow the double-click speed | All double-click actions | Free | Reversible setting | Shows whether Windows was rejecting the timing |
| Restore “Double-click to open” | File Explorer click behavior | Free | Reversible setting | Explains why one click opens or selection feels wrong |
| Try another mouse or another computer | Mouse, receiver, cable, switch, or driver | Free if you already have a mouse; a basic USB wired mouse is an optional purchase | Low | Separates hardware symptoms from PC configuration |
| Update, restart, and repair Explorer | Windows shell and Explorer startup | Free | Increasingly disruptive as recovery advances | Addresses failures where Explorer itself will not start |
| Repair a Default apps association | One or more file extensions | Free | Reversible application choice | Confirms that folders work and only a file type is affected |
| Reset or recovery options | System-wide Windows problems | Free Windows feature | Highest disruption; back up important data first | Last-resort recovery when earlier Explorer repairs fail |
What troubleshooting order minimizes wasted effort?
Follow this sequence so that each result narrows the cause without changing more than necessary.
- Double-click a folder. If nothing opens, slow the double-click speed one step and test again.
- If one click opens items, restore the double-click Explorer preference.
- Clean and reconnect the mouse, then test it on another computer and test a known-good mouse on this PC.
- If Explorer does not start even with a working mouse, open it with Windows key + E, install updates, and restart.
- Use Microsoft’s System Maintenance, System File Checker, and Automatic Repair guidance if Explorer still fails.
- If folders open but a specific extension does not, set that extension under Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Back up important files before considering a reset or other recovery option.
Stop as soon as the symptom is resolved. A file-association problem does not justify a mouse purchase, and a worn mouse does not justify resetting Windows.

Does the advice differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10?
The mouse control exists in both versions, but the route through Settings has different labels: Windows 11 uses Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse settings, while Windows 10 uses Devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so menu labels and recovery choices can change as future updates arrive. If a label differs, look for the same Additional mouse control and the Buttons tab.
When is replacing the mouse justified?
Replace the mouse only when substitution points to it. A mouse that misses clicks on more than one computer, or one that fails while a known-good mouse works on the same PC, has a strong hardware case for replacement. Choose a basic USB wired mouse when you need a simple test device with no wireless receiver or battery variables.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can double-click timing change after a Windows update?
The available control and its location can change as Windows updates revise Settings labels. Recheck the Buttons tab under Additional mouse settings rather than assuming the option was removed.

Is a mouse test useful if the cursor moves normally?
Yes. Pointer movement can work while the left-button switch or receiver misses one of the two clicks needed for a double-click. Testing another mouse examines the click signal itself, not just cursor movement.
Should I reset Windows as soon as Explorer stops opening?
No. A reset is a later recovery option. Install updates, restart, and work through Microsoft’s maintenance, System File Checker, and Automatic Repair guidance first; back up important data before any reset.

Why might a PDF fail while a folder opens?
Folders and file extensions use different parts of Windows. If folders open, inspect the .pdf association in Settings > Apps > Default apps and choose the intended application instead of changing mouse hardware.
