Dragon Age II console commands are a PC-only feature. To use them, add the -enabledeveloperconsole launch argument, assign a key to OpenConsole_0 in KeyBindings.ini, then press that key in-game and enter a command. The console is invisible, and the steps are not confirmed to work with every launcher or edition.
How to enable the console in Dragon Age II on PC
These steps follow community-documented setup methods; launcher labels can change, and a 2024 Steam Community guide is now marked removed and incompatible with Dragon Age II: Ultimate Edition. If you use that edition, treat the instructions as a troubleshooting route rather than a guarantee. The official Dragon Age II PC manual documents the PC edition and controls.
1. Add the developer-console launch argument
A documented route is to make a shortcut to DragonAge2.exe, open the shortcut’s properties, and append -enabledeveloperconsole after the executable path in the Target field, separated by a space. Keep the existing path and quotation marks intact; the argument belongs after the closing quote. Launch the game with that shortcut.
Steam and the EA App have also offered launch-option fields for adding the same argument, but their interfaces and compatibility can vary. A Steam-hosted PC Gamer article from March 25, 2011 describes the launch argument and configuration-file edit, while a later Steam Community guide reports trouble with its launch-option approach and is currently marked incompatible with Ultimate Edition.

2. Assign a key in KeyBindings.ini
Open DocumentsBioWareDragon Age IISettingsKeyBindings.ini in a text editor. Find the OpenConsole_0 entry and set its value to the key you want. A commonly documented value is Keyboard::Button_GRAVE, for the grave/backtick key, but key names can differ by operating system, storefront, and keyboard layout. Other documented forms include Button_Grave, Button_Kanji, and Button_Z; an unused F key is another option if your setup recognizes it.
Check that the chosen key does not conflict with another binding, especially quicksave or quickload. The community-maintained Dragon Age II console reference records the binding variations and setup details.
3. Open and test the invisible console
Load a game and press the key you assigned. Nothing visible may appear: the console and the text you type are invisible. Enter a command and press Enter. One practical indication that the console has focus is that ordinary controls—such as movement, inventory, or camera movement—stop responding. If the game continues reacting to those controls, the console may not be active or the key binding may not have taken.
There is no universal console key. F8 appears as an example in the Steam-hosted PC Gamer article, but it is not a guaranteed default; the key must match the binding in your own file.

These are community-documented scripts, not commands listed in EA’s manual. Type each command exactly, replacing X with a number where shown.

How to check whether the console works
The community reference suggests runscript zz_upgrade as a setup test. It opens an enchantment screen; use it only if you understand that effect, and close the screen when finished. A failed test does not by itself prove the game cannot use the console: first check the launch argument, the file path, and whether the assigned key name is valid for your keyboard and installation.

Do Dragon Age 2 console commands work on Xbox or PlayStation?
No. The documented developer console is for the PC version; the community reference says it is unavailable on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. These instructions do not apply to those console versions.

Save, encounter, and Keep risks
- Back up your saves before experimenting. The community reference warns that commands can break a game or save file.
- Avoid using encounter-skipping scripts casually.
runscript killallhostilescan interfere with scripted events and prevent progress. - Consider Keep synchronization. The same community reference says enabling the console prevents data from syncing in the Keep. EA’s official manual does not establish this behavior, so if Keep synchronization matters, play without enabling the console.
What to do if the console key or launch argument does not work
- Confirm that you launch the game through the shortcut or launcher entry containing
-enabledeveloperconsole. - Check the exact
OpenConsole_0entry inKeyBindings.ini, including the key-name spelling accepted by your installation. - Try a different unassigned key and check for conflicts with quicksave or quickload.
- Verify the game edition and launcher. The 2024 Steam guide’s incompatibility notice concerns its Ultimate Edition setup; it does not establish that every Ultimate Edition installation fails.
- Remember that a working console remains invisible. Use whether normal controls stop responding as a clue, rather than expecting a visible prompt.
