For a first playthrough, play the four main Dragon Age games in release order: Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, then Dragon Age: The Veilguard. It is the clearest route through the series’ setting and references, and avoids trying to untangle overlapping events before you know the world.
Dragon Age games in release order
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Dragon Age II
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard
This is the sequence EA lists for the main games on its Dragon Age franchise page. BioWare’s official recap also connects the stories of Origins and Dragon Age II, making release order a practical way to meet the setting and its events without reconstructing the timeline first.

Why release order works best for a first playthrough
The first two games do not fit into a simple, neatly separated timeline. BioWare’s story recap describes Origins and Dragon Age II as sharing a universe, with story periods that overlap around the Fifth Blight. Dragon Age II spans ten years and includes events during and after that period.
Because of that overlap, trying to place every event in exact chronological order is not the most helpful first step. Release order gives you a straightforward path through the four games while letting the connections emerge as you encounter them. The official recap does not establish a complete, event-by-event chronology for all four titles.
#1 Best Overall
Can you start with Inquisition?
Yes. If you want to try one game before committing to the full series, Dragon Age: Inquisition is a reasonable place to begin. BioWare describes it as a choice-driven role-playing game in its game catalog. That description does not establish that Inquisition is objectively the easiest or best entry for every newcomer, and starting there means you will encounter the series out of release order.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the fourth game in EA’s listed main-game sequence. EA and BioWare announced its worldwide launch for October 31, 2024, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, the EA App, and Epic Games Store. Those are launch details, not a guarantee of current availability in every region or storefront. See EA’s launch announcement for the announcement information.
