She was speaking specifically about player-created characters—not every Qunari depiction in the game.
What did the developer say about the Qunari designs?
Busche addressed the question during a Dragon Age Day developer AMA on December 4, 2024. Her explanation was that a creator offering broad control over both the head and body comes with design constraints. BioWare considered those constraints a worthwhile trade-off so players could use the full range of face and body sliders available to other lineages.
She also said the team viewed player-created Qunari in The Veilguard as a continuation of the player-created Qunari style in Inquisition. In her words: “First let me say that when you have a character creator with the breadth of sliders and options for both head and body, that does create some constraints that you need to work within. We felt this was ultimately a good trade-off for the player, to ensure they could get the full range of face and body sliders that the other lineages were afforded. Also, we viewed the player-created Qunari as a continuation of the style of player-created Qunari in Dragon Age: Inquisition, which in both games, differ from some of the other forms of Qunari we’ve seen.”
The statement presents the design as a balance between customization and a particular visual approach. It does not say that customization was the only factor, or that every player would prefer the result.

Which Qunari designs was Busche talking about?
The distinction is between a player-built Qunari and other Qunari forms shown in the series. Busche explicitly said player-created Qunari in both games differ from some other forms of Qunari. That matters when comparing Rook, the player character, with other Qunari in The Veilguard, including the Antaam: her answer was not a claim that all Qunari should share one appearance.
Her comparison also reaches back to Inquisition, but only to its player-created Qunari style. It does not establish that the two games’ models are identical, nor does it settle whether a player finds either approach appealing.

Why did customization matter to the explanation?
The Veilguard lets players choose among four lineages—elves, Qunari, humans, and dwarves—and offers extensive face and body controls. In a June 2024 preview, Game Informer reported more than 40 horn types and materials, alongside options including body types and separate pronoun selection. That preview provides context for Busche’s reference to a wide-ranging creator; it is not a technical specification or a post-release audit of every option.
Game Informer also reported that BioWare used the creator to make most NPCs, with exceptions for main characters such as companions. That is a separate production detail, not an explanation Busche gave for the player Qunari’s appearance.

What was the criticism, and how representative was it?
After the designs were revealed, some published commentary objected to the player-created Qunari’s look. A September 2024 ComicBook.com opinion piece criticized the design and compared it unfavorably with earlier games. That establishes that the criticism appeared publicly; it does not measure how widely players agreed. The cited sources do not provide a poll or survey of audience opinion.
Whether the design works is ultimately a matter of taste. Busche’s answer explains the studio’s reasoning and the distinction it drew between player-created Qunari and other Qunari forms; it does not prove that one look is objectively better.
