What Square Enix announced in June 2024
Square Enix’s June 19, 2024 announcement paired a firm release date for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake with the reveal of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D. At the time, the publisher said Dragon Quest III would release on November 14, 2024, while the two earlier games were planned for 2025.

Those were announcement-era dates, not upcoming releases. Square Enix later confirmed Dragon Quest III was available on November 14, 2024. The Steam version’s date was November 15, 2024. The subsequent release date for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake was October 30, 2025.

The original 2024 announcement described Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D as a 2025 release. On May 27, 2025, a PlayStation Blog announcement gave the launch date as October 30, 2025, under the title Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.

The two games were released together in one package, rather than as separate launches. The later PlayStation announcement also lists Nintendo Switch 2 among the supported platforms; Square Enix’s June 2024 announcement had listed Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows.
Why Dragon Quest III came first in the trilogy
Dragon Quest I, II, and III form the Erdrick trilogy, linked through their story and setting. Although the first two games appeared earlier historically, Square Enix positioned the HD-2D versions in the order Dragon Quest III, followed by Dragon Quest I & II, so players can experience the trilogy’s connections in that sequence.

In its 2024 announcement, Square Enix said that playing Dragon Quest I & II after Dragon Quest III would let players enjoy the connections between the three games. The later PlayStation Blog post likewise describes the first two games as taking place after Dragon Quest III.
