Either way, make the vocation change at Alltrades Abbey.
Choose a Sage unlock route
| Route | What you need | Trade-off |

| Gadabout | A Gadabout at level 20 or higher | No Words of Wisdom is needed, but you must level the character as a Gadabout. |
| Words of Wisdom | A Words of Wisdom and a character at level 20 or higher | Lets a character of another vocation become a Sage, but depends on finding the item. |
These unlock conditions are reported by game-specific walkthroughs rather than official Square Enix documentation. For either route, plan around the level requirement and the level reset that follows a vocation change.
Unlock Sage at Alltrades Abbey
- Reach Alltrades Abbey. Speak to the NPC who handles vocation changes.
- Check the character’s level. The intended character must be at least level 20.
- Meet the route-specific requirement. Use a level-20 Gadabout for the item-free route, or have Words of Wisdom for a character changing from another vocation.
- Select Sage. Confirm the change only after considering the character’s level and learned spells.
How the two routes differ
Become a Gadabout first
Once a Gadabout reaches level 20, it can change to Sage without Words of Wisdom. Choose this if you would rather level a Gadabout than search for the item.
Use Words of Wisdom
Words of Wisdom is an in-game item, not a real-world product. Guides name the Tower of Transcendence and Rimuldar as places to obtain it. The available location information does not establish a complete route to each copy, so check the map and item details in your game rather than relying on unverified directions.

Know what changes when you reclass
A walkthrough reports that changing vocation resets the character to level 1 while retaining learned spells. That means reaching level 20 unlocks the change; it does not mean the Sage starts at level 20. If you want to keep a character’s current progress for a particular stretch of the adventure, wait to reclass until you are ready for that reset.

A game-specific guide describes Sage as a spellcasting vocation with access to Mage and Priest spells. The available remake-specific information does not establish a complete spell list, exact comparative strength, or an optimal build, so those details should not be assumed from older versions of Dragon Quest III.
