Start with the vocation whose combat style appeals to you, then build a Pawn party that covers the roles you want. Your choice is not permanent: Capcom’s manual says you can change vocations at a vocation guild. These ten tips focus on making early decisions, fights, and journeys easier to approach without prescribing one required build.
1. Choose a starting vocation by how you want to fight
Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins with four vocations: Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief. They offer different ways to approach combat, rather than a simple best-to-worst ranking. Capcom’s Official Web Manual describes the design succinctly: “Each vocation has a unique playstyle, as well as distinct strengths and weaknesses.”

These role descriptions are drawn from Capcom’s Official Web Manual and the PlayStation game overview. Pick the style you are most interested in trying, not the one you think you must choose to make a “correct” character.
2. Change vocations if your first choice stops being fun
Your initial vocation is not a permanent commitment. Capcom’s manual says you can change vocations at a vocation guild. Treat that option as permission to experiment: if you would rather fight at range, move quickly, hold the frontline, or support allies, try a different role when you reach a guild. There is no need to follow an assumed optimal order.

3. Build a Pawn party around the roles you want covered
The Arisen can lead a party with up to three Pawns. A mix of roles can provide frontline fighting, ranged attacks, and support, but that is a practical option—not a mandatory party formula. The party and vocation descriptions on the PlayStation page give you a useful starting point for thinking about which gaps you want to fill.
For example, if your own character fights at close range, you might value ranged pressure or support from companions. If you prefer to attack from afar, consider how the rest of the group can handle threats up close. Adjust the party to suit your play style and the challenges ahead.

4. Give Pawns commands when the situation calls for it
Pawns are AI companions that respond to your commands; they are not just followers to leave on autopilot. Direct them when you want them to take a key position or adapt to a changing fight. The official PlayStation overview describes both Pawn commands and their role in combat.
5. Use a Mage for support when your group needs it
A Mage can heal, enchant allies’ weapons, and attack with magick. That support can be useful if your party needs more help, though it is only one way to assemble a group. Stronger spells take longer to cast, so the Mage role trades some immediacy for those capabilities. You can choose a different party style if it better suits your approach.

6. Look for enemy weaknesses and use the terrain
Do not focus only on the enemy in front of you. Capcom’s combat overview advises considering party setup, terrain, and enemies’ strengths and weaknesses, and says players can exploit weaknesses and use the environment. Apply those broad cues as you decide how to approach a fight; the available guidance does not establish one universal tactic or specific weakness for every enemy.
7. Think of vocations as different tools, not a ranking
Each vocation solves a different kind of combat problem. A Fighter brings a sword and shield to melee and defense; an Archer attacks from range and can target elevated foes; a Thief prioritizes speed and mobility; and a Mage brings healing, weapon enchantments, and magick, with stronger spells requiring more casting time. Consider what you want to do yourself and what you would rather have Pawns handle. These distinctions come from Capcom’s manual and the PlayStation overview.

8. Check current travel options before planning around old advice
Fast-travel advice can become outdated as the game changes. A Steam Community search result reproducing Capcom’s June 10, 2026 update notes lists an Eternal Ferrystone, additional Portcrystals, another Portcrystal reward for Monster Culling, and oxcart stopovers. The official update page was not accessible for confirmation, so treat those specific patch details as unverified until checked against Capcom’s update information. In particular, do not rely on older claims that the game has no reusable fast-travel item without checking the current update notes.
When deciding whether to travel quickly or continue along a route, weigh convenience against the opportunity to keep exploring. Which option is useful depends on your destination and what you want to do on the way.

9. Remember that Pawns fit a single-player game
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is described by PlayStation as a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG. Pawns are AI companions; you can hire two additional Pawns in-game or from other players over the internet. Online interaction is therefore an option for finding companions, not a requirement for the game’s basic party structure. The PS5 listing identifies online play as optional.
10. Check the edition and platform when buying
As of October 8, 2026, Capcom says Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen for Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for October 9, 2026. Capcom’s announcement says the package combines the main game and expansion; on October 8 it is still an upcoming release. That announcement does not establish regional physical formats, retailer stock, or prices. PlayStation lists the base game for PS5 on its game page. Capcom also reported more than 14 million cumulative units sold for the Dragon’s Dogma series as of March 31, 2026; that is a series-wide total, not sales of Dragon’s Dogma 2 alone.
