You can change your vocation later, so choose your first one for the combat style you want to try—not because you think the choice is permanent. Early on, build a party with complementary roles, use Pawn suggestions to get quest help, and adapt to enemies rather than relying on one fixed party formula.
Which vocation should you choose first?
Choose by how you want to fight. The four starting vocations are Fighter, Mage, Archer, and Thief. Their roles give you different ways to approach combat, but none is the universally best first choice. Capcom’s official manual lists the starting vocations, while PlayStation’s game overview describes their combat styles.

| Vocation | Combat style and party role | Consider it if you want to… |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Sword-and-shield melee; engages enemies at close range. | Fight on the frontline. |
| Mage | Support through healing and weapon enchantments, alongside magic attacks. | Bring healing and magical support to the party. |
| Archer | Ranged attacks that can exploit enemy weaknesses. | Attack from a distance and target weak points. |
| Thief | Fast, mobile dagger combat. | Favor speed and close-range mobility. |
Other vocations, including Warrior and Sorcerer, become available as you progress. Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, and Trickster are Arisen-only vocations; do not expect every option to be open at the start.
Can you change vocation later?
Yes. Visit a vocation guild to change your vocation. That makes the opening choice reversible: use it to find a combat style you enjoy, then switch when you want to try something different. The official manual’s Adventuring Basics explains the starting choices and changing vocations.
#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
- Pre-order Bonus: Superior Weapons Quartet
How do you tell Pawns what to do?
Pawns are active party members who respond to commands and offer help both in and out of combat. Pay attention when one makes a suggestion: issuing a command immediately afterward can prompt the Pawn to follow through, for example by guiding you to a location or helping with a task. Check your platform’s on-screen prompts for the command inputs; the controls should not be assumed to be identical across platforms.
If you prefer not to use long-press commands, the manual says they can be enabled or disabled in Game Settings. See Capcom’s Pawn manual for the command and suggestion mechanics.

Can a Pawn lead you to a quest?
Yes. Set a quest as your priority in the Quest menu, then check for Pawn markers or listen for suggestions. Capcom’s support FAQ, last updated July 20, 2026, explains the quest markers:
- A blue marker indicates that your Main Pawn may be able to lead you on the quest or provide useful information.
- An orange “I” marker relates to the first support Pawn; “II” relates to the second support Pawn.
Not every quest displays a marker, and some markers appear only under certain conditions. NPC schedules and quest prerequisites can also affect what you see, so no marker does not prove that a Pawn has nothing useful to say. If you need a hint, an in-game Diviner’s Salon or Reverent Shrine may offer one for a fee.
Rank #3
- Relic Expedition Cycle – Throughout their journey in the kingdom of Norgan, the Arisen must unearth and appraise forgotten relics to unlock powerful new weapons and skills.
- New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
- Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
- Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.
What should you focus on early?
Build a party with complementary roles
Think in terms of frontline protection, ranged coverage, and support tools rather than a mandatory party recipe. Fighters can engage and protect in melee, Archers attack from range and target weaknesses, and Mages bring healing, enchantments, and magic attacks. A Mage is a useful option if you want those support abilities, but it is not a requirement. Adapt the party to your own vocation and preferences.
Read enemies and terrain
Consider your party’s strengths, the terrain, and enemy weaknesses before treating an encounter as a straight fight. Look for openings and ways to exploit vulnerabilities; enemies can react to your tactics. PlayStation’s official overview describes these combat considerations.
Rank #4
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
Use fast travel with its limits in mind
Ferrystones cannot be used in every situation: combat prevents their use, and certain roofs can block activation without consuming the stone. If a stone does not activate, check your situation and surroundings before assuming it was spent. These restrictions are covered in Capcom’s support FAQ.
Treat the Explorer’s Camping Kit as optional
The Explorer’s Camping Kit is an in-game item, not real-world equipment required to start playing. Capcom says it is stored in-game and may also be purchased from in-game shops; its availability does not make it a prerequisite for beginner guidance.
