You can play Xbox games on a PC or handheld by installing a PC version, using an eligible Xbox Play Anywhere purchase, streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming, or streaming from your own console with Remote Play. A Windows handheld can run supported PC games locally, but it cannot install every Xbox console game. The right route depends on the specific game, device, region, and whether you own a console or subscription.
Choose the right way to play
| Route | What runs the game? | What to check | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC installation | Your PC or Windows handheld | PC edition, Windows version, game requirements, and storage | Local play, including games that support offline play |
| Xbox Play Anywhere | The PC or Xbox running its supported version | Whether the exact game is eligible and supports account save syncing | One eligible digital purchase across Xbox and PC |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Xbox cloud servers | Supported device, region, game catalog, and subscription or purchase conditions | Playing without installing the PC game locally |
| Xbox Remote Play | Your own Xbox console | Supported device, console remote settings and power state, and internet connection | Playing games installed on your console from elsewhere |
| Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC | Your Windows 11 PC or handheld | Current supported lineup, region, and hardware requirements | The limited classic original Xbox games announced for the PC program |
These routes have different catalogs and requirements; they are not interchangeable. Xbox describes the PC app, Play Anywhere, Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play on its Xbox handhelds page and Xbox on PC page.

Can I play my Xbox games on my PC?
Often, but owning an Xbox console game does not automatically give you the PC version. Check whether the game has a PC edition, whether your purchase is eligible for Play Anywhere, or whether you can stream it from your console or the cloud.
Install the PC version
On a Windows PC, open the Xbox app, sign in with your Xbox account, find a game that has a PC version, and install it. You can also use the PC storefront where that edition is sold. The Xbox PC app brings together games from most PC storefronts, but that does not turn every storefront game into an Xbox console edition. Game Pass access applies to the current included catalog; other games may need to be purchased separately.

Xbox says the app is preinstalled on most Windows 11 PCs. Its general app requirements are Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of app storage plus room for games, and a display of 720p or higher. Windows S mode must be exited to play through the app; individual games can require more capable hardware. See the Xbox PC FAQ for the current app requirements.
Use an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase
For an eligible digital game, Play Anywhere lets one purchase work on supported Xbox consoles and PC. Supported game progress, add-ons, and achievements sync through the Xbox account. Eligibility is title-specific: look for the Play Anywhere designation on the game listing rather than assuming a console purchase transfers.
Can I play Xbox games on a handheld?
A Windows handheld is a portable PC. It can install and run supported PC games if its hardware meets the game’s requirements; it does not make every Xbox console game locally installable. You can also use Cloud Gaming or Remote Play where the device and service are supported.

Check handheld compatibility
Xbox labels games Handheld optimized, Mostly compatible, Unsupported, or Not tested. These labels are guidance, not a frame-rate guarantee: some games may need settings changes, and actual performance varies by title and device. Check both the label and the game’s PC requirements using the Xbox handheld compatibility page.
Compare the device to the game
For example, Xbox lists the ROG Xbox Ally with Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16 GB memory, and a 512 GB SSD; the ROG Xbox Ally X listing specifies Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24 GB memory, and a 1 TB SSD. These are product-page specifications, not independent performance comparisons. Xbox also lists microSD cards for the ROG Xbox Ally family, but confirm the card’s compatibility with your exact model before buying. A controller is optional; Xbox lists its Xbox Wireless Controller as one PC input option. Details are on the ROG Xbox Ally product page and Xbox PC page.
When weighing a PC against a handheld, consider the games you want, performance for those titles, portability, screen and controls, storage, internet dependence, and any subscription cost. The official product information cited here does not provide independent comparative benchmarks.

Do I have to buy Xbox games again for PC?
Not always, but a console copy alone does not generally grant a PC copy. Play Anywhere is the cross-buy exception described by Xbox for eligible digital games. For other titles, check the PC edition’s store listing; a PC copy or Game Pass access may be needed. If you own the Xbox game and console, Remote Play can stream the installed game without granting a separate PC license.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I stream Xbox games without downloading them?
Yes, for games and devices supported by Xbox Cloud Gaming. Cloud Gaming runs the game on Xbox servers rather than installing it locally, but not every owned game or Game Pass game is available to stream. Xbox says Game Pass is required for some cloud-playable games; games outside a subscription’s included library may be sold separately. Catalog and regional availability vary, so check the Xbox service and device information before relying on a particular title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I play my Xbox remotely on my PC?
Yes. Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S to a supported device. Enable remote features on the console, ensure it is on or in Sleep mode, and use a supported device with an internet connection. Remote Play uses your console; Cloud Gaming instead streams from Xbox servers. See Xbox’s Remote Play information for supported-device and setup details.

Does Xbox Game Pass work on a handheld?
It depends on how you want to play. On a Windows handheld, install supported PC games through the Xbox app when they are available to you. Cloud Gaming can provide another route on supported devices, but its catalog, regional availability, and subscription requirements apply. A Game Pass subscription does not make every console game installable locally on a handheld.
What is Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC?
Xbox announced an early-release PC route for four classic original Xbox games on July 22, 2026: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Xbox said the games were available for PC purchase and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans; it also said existing digital console licenses for those titles carried over to PC or handheld. This is a separate, limited program—not evidence that all classic console games can run locally on PC. Check the Xbox Wire announcement for the evolving lineup and supported regions.
