Dressmaker is easiest to learn when you treat every order as a pipeline: read the brief, measure the client, plan in the sketchbook, cut real fabric panels, assemble the mannequin, sew carefully, finish the garment and hand it over. You do not need real-world sewing knowledge or physical supplies. This guide covers the full Steam release launched September 21, 2026, not the older Prototype 0.5.5 download on itch.io. Check an article’s edition before following its button-by-button instructions, because the prototype’s interface and controls are not a safe substitute for the release build.

The game is described by Free Lives as “a cozy game about making dresses.” Its virtual workflow is self-contained: there are no needles, fabric bolts or sewing machines to buy for gameplay.
What do I need before starting?
You need the Steam game, a supported computer and enough time to read each customer card. Real sewing experience is explicitly unnecessary. - Read the entire brief. Style requests, fit information and individual requirements can conflict with a design that merely looks appropriate.
- Keep the current build in mind. Build 443, released October 14, changed trim placement, controls and colour/fabric-type percentage calculations. Older guides can therefore show obsolete actions or scoring.
- Expect a campaign rather than a sandbox-only loop. Story commissions build reputation and coin, while separate off-the-rack work lets you make dresses outside a customer brief.
How does a customer commission work from start to finish?
A commission moves through seven connected stages. Skipping a stage, or confusing an off-the-rack design with the active order, is the most common reason a new player gets stuck.
- Brief and measurements: read the customer’s requested style and constraints, then measure the client as the tutorial directs.
- Sketchbook design: choose garment components and preview how fabrics affect the style targets.
- Pattern drafting: commit the planned design to a cuttable pattern.
- Fabric selection and cutting: place the required pieces on the cutting table, respecting grain, bias and print direction.
- Mannequin assembly: put each cut panel in its indicated position and inspect the developing garment.
- Sewing and finishing: follow the marked seams, add useful decoration, then finish the dress.
- Photo and handover: take the required photo and complete the commission; selling or gifting are separate choices when those options unlock.
The order matters because the game calculates the finished result from the panels you actually cut and place, not from the sketchbook image alone.

Start with the customer’s written requirements, then verify the recorded measurements and fit the mannequin before cutting. The first-release tutorial introduces measuring at the beginning, so do not assume a generic body measurement applies to every customer.
Separate style targets from hard requirements
A requirement can be a minimum or an upper limit. A card that says a value must be “at most” is a ceiling: pushing the associated style bar higher can make the result worse even if the dress looks attractive. Treat the text as the authority and the bars as planning feedback.
Check the mannequin before committing fabric
Confirm that the mannequin reflects the customer’s recorded measurements. If the fit looks wrong before cutting, correct the setup first; trying to compensate with decoration later does not change the underlying fit.
How do the sketchbook bars and fabric swatches work?
Click the name of a component such as bodice, sleeves or skirt to reveal its options. Build 410 made this affordance clearer, but labels and prompts can still vary with patches, so follow the current on-screen hint.
Use the bars as a forecast, not a finished score
Player guidance describes three visual ranges: a yellow line for the target, dark green for a guaranteed contribution and striped green for a fabric-dependent range. Swatches show what a fabric might contribute; they do not replace cutting and placing the real panels. Colouring the sketch is therefore a planning step, not a completed garment.

Design to the wording
Choose components that satisfy the written brief first. If the card sets a minimum, make the guaranteed contribution reach it where possible. If it sets an “at most” value, keep the planned result below the ceiling and avoid adding components or fabrics that push it over.
Draft only when the design is ready
Once the component choices and fabric plan make sense, draft the pattern. Changing the sketch after cutting means the physical pieces no longer represent the plan, so spend a moment checking every required component before committing.
How should I choose fabric and lay out the pattern?
Choose fabric for its behaviour and direction as well as its colour. The official listing names cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet, and says that each panel’s material and orientation appear on the finished dress.
Inspect grain, bias and printed direction
- Grain: align a panel with the fabric’s intended direction when the brief or the visual design calls for a conventional hang.
- Bias: rotate deliberately when a diagonal orientation is part of the look; do not let an efficient layout create an accidental bias.
- Directional prints: check which way motifs face. Turning a piece to save space can invert its print on the dress.
- Material contribution: remember that the fabric category can affect style percentages, and Build 443 revised the colour and fabric-type calculations.
Use a check-before-cutting routine
- Place every required pattern piece on the cutting table.
- Confirm that the material is the one previewed in the sketchbook.
- Rotate each piece intentionally and inspect the grain or print direction.
- Look for collisions or missing pieces before cutting.
- Cut only after the complete layout still satisfies the brief.
There is no single layout that is always best. A compact arrangement may conserve fabric, while a rotated panel can change the visible pattern or the garment’s contribution to a requirement.
How do I assemble the mannequin and sew without ruining the dress?
Place each cut panel on the mannequin, inspect the garment from more than one angle, then sew along the marked seam. Build 410 added a hover hint on an inventory panel to show where a piece belongs.
Verify placement before sewing
- Hover over an inventory panel if its destination is unclear.
- Check front, back and side views for reversed or misplaced pieces.
- Look at the grain and directional print again; a correctly shaped panel can still face the wrong way.
Follow the seam at a controllable pace
When a curve becomes difficult, slow down or pause rather than forcing the cursor through it. Player guides describe enabling Sewing Assist when steering is the obstacle, resetting a current piece with R, and using the seam ripper when an appropriate undo is available. These controls are version-sensitive: use the prompt shown by your current build, especially after Build 443’s control changes.
Inspect construction before decorating
Decoration cannot repair an incorrectly joined seam or a panel that was cut in the wrong direction. Finish the structural sewing first, then add trim or other details that support the brief.

When is a commission complete, and how do I call the next customer?
Complete the construction, finish the dress and take its photo before choosing any separate sale or gifting action. The game distinguishes a customer commission from the independently labeled off-the-rack sale option.
- Finish all required sewing and finishing work.
- Take the commission photo.
- Use the handover/completion action for the active customer.
- Do not choose Sell as off-rack when you intend to submit the commissioned dress; Build 443 renamed that action to reduce the confusion.
- After the order is resolved, ring the shop’s front-desk bell to summon the next customer. Build 403 made ringing the bell necessary for progression.
If no customer appears, first confirm that the previous commission reached its photo and handover stage, then ring the bell. A completed-looking dress in the workshop is not necessarily a submitted commission.
What is the difference between commissions and off-the-rack dresses?
Commissions are brief-driven jobs that advance the campaign and reward reputation and coin. Off-the-rack dresses are independent designs displayed for sale; they are not a replacement for the current customer order.

If you accidentally enter the off-the-rack route, look for the separately labeled commissioned-dress entry in the shop interface rather than trying to submit the sale as a customer handover.

How does progression unlock patterns, fabrics and rewards?
Campaign progress unlocks additional pattern and fabric content. Build 443 states that unlocks are applied retroactively to players who have already passed the intended point, while gifting now unlocks later than it did previously.
- Reputation and coin: earned through custom commissions, not merely by sketching.
- New content: patterns and fabrics arrive as the campaign advances; the exact order of every unlock is not fixed in the available public guidance.
- Story scope: Team Dressmaker announced approximately 35 hours of story commissions, excluding off-the-rack dresses. That is a scope estimate, not a guaranteed completion time for every player.
- Content scale: the September announcement cited more than 150 dress pieces, 450 fabrics and 350 accessories. These are publisher figures, and later updates can change totals.
Do not treat an older guide’s customer order, relationship reward or unlock sequence as universal. Patch notes take precedence when a dated guide conflicts with the current build; review the official Steam announcements and patch notes.
Why is my style result wrong even though the dress looks right?
Re-read the requirement card before changing the design. A visually suitable dress can fail because a target is a ceiling, because the cut panels differ from the swatch forecast, or because a directional choice changed the garment’s contribution.

- Check “at most” language: exceeding a ceiling is a failure even when the bar looks impressive.
- Recount actual panels: the finished calculation uses what was cut and placed, not only the coloured sketch.
- Inspect orientation: grain, bias and printed direction affect the visible result and can alter the style outcome.
- Account for Build 443: colour and fabric-type percentage calculations changed, so an older score may not match the current display.
Build 443 warns that displayed past scores can differ after the calculation revision. That does not necessarily mean the older dress was rebuilt incorrectly.
What should I do if a panel is missing?
Check the cutting table and inventory before restarting the commission. Player guidance recommends verifying that every required piece was actually cut and that it has not been placed in a different inventory location.
- Return to the cutting table and compare the required pattern list with the pieces present.
- Inspect inventory panels and use the hover placement hint where available.
- Confirm that a rotated or similarly shaped panel is not being mistaken for the missing piece.
- Only then reconsider the pattern or restart the current construction step.
This diagnosis covers the common workflow mistake; not every save or interface issue has the same cause.
Why can’t I hand in the finished dress?
Separate construction from submission. A dress can be sewn correctly yet remain in the workshop until the finishing, photo and handover actions are complete.
- Verify that every seam and required finishing action is complete.
- Take the commission photo if the order requests one.
- Use the customer-completion action, not Sell as off-rack.
- After handover, ring the front-desk bell to trigger the next customer.
If the style score is imperfect, distinguish that from a missing handover action: passing every target is not the same as completing the construction and submission sequence.

Can I use Dressmaker to learn real sewing?
Dressmaker can illustrate concepts such as pattern pieces, grain direction, fabric choice and seam following, but it is not a substitute for instruction on a real machine. Its virtual materials and controls do not provide physical safety guidance, machine setup or fabric-handling practice.
If the game inspires a real-world project, treat a beginner dressmaking pattern book or beginner sewing kit as separate purchases. Nothing physical connects to the game, unlocks its patterns or is required to play.
