To unlock more clothes, build Prestige for additional fabrics and accessories, and develop customer relationships to receive patterns. Off-the-rack designs are the closest thing to a free-design mode, but the exact unlock commission differs between reported builds.
The commercial Steam edition also lists Steam Cloud support for Windows and Mac. It should not be confused with the creators’ free prototype or a third-party browser mirror, which can have different progression, clothing, and save behavior.

What customization means in Dressmaker
Dressmaker is a single-player dressmaking simulation from Cozy Lives and Free Lives. The commercial Steam release launched on September 21, 2026. Its core loop is not a real-world sewing tutorial: every cutting, sewing, and fitting action happens through the game’s design interface.
A customer gives you a brief and a budget. You interpret that request in the sketchbook, create the garment, and submit it for feedback. Successful work builds reputation and coin, while the design decisions determine how the finished dress looks.

The commission workflow
- Read the request. Note the requested style, any constraints, and the available budget before selecting materials.
- Choose the garment components. Select a silhouette, pattern, fabric, and finishing details in the sketchbook.
- Preview the design. Use the sketchbook preview to catch an unsuitable combination before consuming materials.
- Lay out the pieces. Arrange each pattern piece on the fabric. Orientation and placement are design choices, not merely preparation steps.
- Cut the fabric. Cut on the grain or on the bias when the design calls for it.
- Sew and decorate. Assemble the garment, then add items such as buttons, bows, appliqué, or lace trims.
- Review and deliver. Submit the completed dress to the customer, or use the off-the-rack route when that system is available.
The Steam description summarizes the loop as choosing fabric, arranging and cutting patterns, sewing garments, and adding decorations. That sequence is why material selection and cutting layout matter as much as the final accessory choice.
Designing without a customer
There is no need to wait for a brief once off-the-rack access has opened. Create a design in the sketchbook, preview it, cut and sew it, and place the finished dress in the shop window as a pre-made item. Customers can then buy it from the rack. This is the game’s closest equivalent to a sandbox or free-design mode, although it still uses the same material inventory and progression systems as commissions.
Materials and fabric control
The official store identifies five broad fabric families: cotton, linen, wool, silk, and velvet. The exact color names, variants, prices, and stock are build-sensitive, so the in-game shop and your current save are the final authority. A material shown in a guide may not have the same name or availability in another build.

Dressmaker gives you control over how a fabric is laid out, not just which family you purchase. The official description specifically says that a pattern aligned to the grain or cut on the bias changes what appears on the final dress. A layout can therefore alter the visible direction or placement of the material even when the fabric and pattern are unchanged.
Decorative choices
Buttons, bows, appliqué, lace trims, and other accessories are part of the finishing stage. They are separate customization decisions from the base fabric and pattern. A dress can therefore use an already available silhouette while still requiring Prestige for a particular trim or accessory.
Do not assume that a complete list of item names, costs, or quantities applies to every release. The tracked unlock database and the official store agree on the broad categories, but individual inventory is tied to the build and save.

How clothing unlocks work
The current unlock database separates clothing availability into four practical groups. Knowing the group tells you which kind of progress to pursue instead of repeatedly looking for a nonexistent universal level.

A practical progression plan
- Take commissions you can complete reliably. They are the main structured activity and provide reputation and coin when delivered.
- Watch the Prestige value. Fabrics and accessories use Prestige-based gating, so a missing trim is not necessarily tied to a character’s friendship.
- Build relationships deliberately. Patterns generally come from friendship progression rather than from buying materials.
- Check the inventory after each milestone. Unlocks can expand the shop or sketchbook without changing the name of an existing item.
- Record the build number when following a guide. An instruction that is correct for one build can be wrong for another.
A Build 410 community-wiki snapshot lists 10 named customers with major commission chains. That is a snapshot of the documented build, not a guarantee that every release has exactly 10 characters or that every pattern is tied to one of those chains.
When does off-the-rack unlock?
There is no single milestone that can safely be stated for every current copy. One current player FAQ says off-the-rack designs become available after the Fierce Funeral request. A separate guide dated October 18, 2026 says that non-commission dresses unlock after the third completed customer commission in Build 443. Those reports conflict, and both are tied to particular versions.

The reliable answer is that off-the-rack access arrives during customer progression. If the option is missing, continue completing commissions and look for a shop-window or non-commission prompt in the sketchbook. Use the milestone shown by your own build rather than abandoning a save because it has not matched a guide’s count.
Using the system after it appears
- Open the sketchbook when you are not fulfilling a specific customer brief.
- Select the silhouette, pattern, fabric, and decorations for the design you want to make.
- Preview the combination, then arrange and cut the pattern pieces.
- Sew the garment and apply its finishing details.
- Choose the option to display the finished dress in the shop window.
- Leave it on the rack for a customer to buy, or replace it later with another pre-made design.
This route is still subject to material and pattern unlocks. Off-the-rack does not bypass Prestige or friendship requirements; it removes the requirement that a particular customer request be active.
How outfit saves work
Current official information documents game-save persistence and Steam Cloud support, but it does not list a separate “save outfit as a template” command. Treat a finished commission and an off-the-rack dress as part of the game save, not as independently exportable design files.

Preserving a design in the commercial Steam edition
Steam lists Steam Cloud support for the Windows and Mac versions. To use that support safely, run the same commercial edition while signed in to the same Steam account, allow the cloud status to finish syncing before closing the game, and confirm that the expected save appears on the second computer before making new progress there.
If a save does not appear, avoid starting a replacement game that could overwrite the cloud copy. Close the game, check Steam’s cloud status, and make a local backup before trying any manual transfer. Community instructions for locating or copying save files are version-sensitive; they should be treated as backup guidance rather than as an officially guaranteed migration procedure.
