Driveclub is a visually impressive, closed-course PS4 racer with satisfying speed and accessible-but-demanding driving, but its online-focused club and challenge layer is no longer available. Its offline events remain playable, making a used physical copy the relevant option for prospective players. Critics were divided: Metacritic lists a 71/100 average from 85 reviews, while GameSpot’s Kevin VanOrd rated it 5/10.
What kind of racing game is Driveclub?
Released for PS4 on October 7, 2014, by Evolution Studios, Driveclub centers on closed-course racing events, car progression, and clubs. Its defining appeal is the sensation of speed: critics praised detailed environments, strong presentation, and handling that is approachable at first but still asks for precision.

The design also tied racing to social competition. Clubs and asynchronous challenges let players compare results and compete against rivals without necessarily racing them live. That layer was a major part of the game’s identity, but it depends on services Sony later discontinued.
What did critics think of Driveclub?
Reception was mixed, not a consensus triumph or failure. Metacritic records a 71/100 critic average from 85 reviews, categorized as “Mixed or Average”: 46 positive, 38 mixed, and one negative. Those figures describe the listed reviews, not player ratings or a measure of current activity. Metacritic’s Driveclub critic reviews provide the review record.

The split is visible in individual criticism. GameSpot reviewer Kevin VanOrd gave the game 5/10, recognizing a solid racing foundation, many cars, and tracks while faulting its lack of personality. Other reviews were more persuaded by the driving feel, speed, visuals, weather effects, and club challenges. Common reservations included limited variety in the core events, uneven race or track design, and the extent to which online features were essential to the experience. GameSpot’s review represents the more skeptical end of that range.
How do the launch problems affect the review?
Serious server problems affected Driveclub at release, complicating access to features built around online play. GameSpot later reported that Evolution Studios issued numerous updates and added content over time. The launch record matters, but it is not the whole game: reviews and retrospectives also reflect a title that evolved after release. GameSpot’s report on the server shutdown recounts the announced end of online service and the game’s online context; its report on Evolution Studios covers post-launch support and the studio’s closure.

What can you play now that the servers are closed?
Sony announced that Driveclub servers would close on March 31, 2020. Sony said offline modes and trophies were expected to remain available. In practical terms, a copy can still serve as a solo racer, but do not expect the original online multiplayer, club competition, or server-dependent challenges to work. The offline game should not be confused with the complete original online experience.
GameSpot reported that PlayStation Store sales of Driveclub, Driveclub VR, Driveclub Bikes, and associated add-ons ended on August 31, 2019. That is a historical delisting date, not evidence of current digital availability. The game’s former director, Paul Rustchynsky, attributed the delisting to licensing reasons; that explanation is his account, not a general guarantee about the availability of any particular used copy.

Is Driveclub worth seeking out?
It is most compelling for players who want a focused PS4 circuit racer and value speed, scenery, and a sizeable selection of events over an active social layer. The driving and presentation were widely praised, but critics’ mixed scores reflect real disagreement about event variety, track design, and personality. Since the online challenges and multiplayer are no longer part of the experience, judge it as an offline game rather than expecting its original club-based pitch intact.
GameSpot reported in March 2016 that Driveclub had sold more than 2 million copies since its October 2014 launch. That is a historical reported sales figure, not a current player count. Sony also told GameSpot, “It has been decided that Evolution Studio will close.”

Driveclub and Driveclub VR are different games
Driveclub VR is a separate PS4 release, not a VR mode included with the standard Driveclub disc. It requires original PlayStation VR hardware. Metacritic lists a 66/100 critic average from 35 reviews for the VR edition. Reviews described its driving as immersive and content-rich, while criticizing softer visuals compared with the standard game; comfort and motion sensitivity vary by player. See Metacritic’s Driveclub VR critic reviews for that edition’s review record.
Driveclub Bikes is also a separate title, and the PlayStation Store delisting covered it and related add-ons alongside the two Driveclub games. A standard Driveclub disc does not establish ownership of either separate release.

What to check before buying a used copy
Because digital sales ended and the online services are closed, a used physical PS4 copy is the straightforward route to the original game. The available information here does not establish live stock, price, condition, or regional edition. Confirm the actual listing details before purchase:
Quick Recap
- Edition: Make sure the listing is for the standard PS4 game if that is what you want; it is not Driveclub VR.
- Condition and seller: Check the disc and case condition, seller terms, and whether the listing is for a complete copy.
- Region: Verify the edition and any region-specific details in the listing rather than assuming all copies are identical.
- Expectations: Buy for the offline racing content, not the discontinued online services.
