DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL is Windows bug check 0x000000D5. It means Driver Verifier’s Special Pool check caught a driver trying to read from or write to memory that had already been freed. The stop code identifies a driver memory-lifetime error; it does not, by itself, prove that Windows, your physical RAM, or the kernel is defective. To find the culprit, preserve the crash dump, inspect it in WinDbg with !analyze -v and .bugcheck, then confirm the suspected module and Driver Verifier state with !verifier. If Verifier has made the computer reboot repeatedly, reset it with verifier /reset and restart.

What does DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL mean?

It is a deliberately precise memory-corruption diagnosis. A driver allocated a block, released it, and later used an address inside that block. Because Special Pool places allocations in a guarded area and tracks their lifetime, the illegal access faults close to the operation that caused it instead of silently corrupting unrelated memory.

Microsoft documents 0xD5 as the result of Driver Verifier’s Special Pool option catching a driver that accesses memory “which was earlier freed.” A post-free read can return stale data or trigger a fault; a post-free write can corrupt another allocation. The verifier turns either mistake into a reproducible stop error while the driver is under test.

The code is therefore evidence of a use-after-free or related cleanup, cancellation, or synchronization defect in kernel-mode code. It is not a general-purpose “Windows is damaged” message and is not proof that a repair utility or a RAM replacement will fix the cause.

What do the four 0xD5 parameters tell you?

The arguments printed with the bug check describe the failing access. Record all four before rebooting or beginning repairs.

Parameter Meaning How to use it
1 The memory address that was referenced. Use it when examining the faulting instruction and the freed allocation in the dump.
2 0 means a read; 1 means a write. A write generally indicates the driver attempted to modify memory after release; a read indicates it attempted to consume stale data.
3 The address of the instruction that made the reference, when known. Resolve this address to a module and stack frame in WinDbg.
4 Reserved. Do not infer an additional cause from this value.

The blue screen may also display a driver name. When Windows can identify one, the name is recorded at KiBugCheckDriver. Treat that name as a lead, not as the entire investigation: confirm it against the stack, timestamps, and verifier data.

Why does Special Pool catch the problem?

Special Pool is a Driver Verifier mode intended to expose memory corruption. It isolates selected allocations and places guard protection around them. The driver can appear to work normally when it uses memory during its valid lifetime, but an access after the allocation has been freed hits the verifier’s protection and causes the 0xD5 check.

Memory-lifetime bugs are otherwise difficult to diagnose. Without a guard, a stale pointer might happen to point into a newly allocated object, producing an intermittent symptom far from the original mistake. Special Pool keeps the allocation under observation so the illegal operation is stopped while the offending driver is active.

Microsoft describes accessing already-freed memory as one of the most common driver memory errors. The check is not something a try–except handler can safely conceal; the driver must avoid using the pointer after release and synchronize its cleanup paths correctly.

Does 0xD5 prove that Windows or RAM is bad?

No. The stop code establishes that a verified driver touched freed special-pool memory. It does not establish a Windows-kernel defect or a physical-memory failure. ntoskrnl.exe often appears in crash reports because the kernel detects and reports the violation; that appearance alone does not make the kernel the faulty component.

Use the dump to distinguish a third-party module from the operating-system reporting path. If the same named driver, instruction range, and call sequence recur, that is stronger evidence than a generic “blue-screen repair” recommendation. Hardware or firmware changes can be sensible secondary checks after a recent update, but they are not the Microsoft-defined explanation for this verifier-specific bug check.

How do I investigate a 0xD5 crash in WinDbg?

Work from the dump and preserve the original file. A debugger can show the exact module and call path that a screenshot of the blue screen cannot.

  1. Preserve the evidence. Copy the kernel or small-memory dump before cleanup software, disk maintenance, or repeated crashes overwrite it. Note the date, workload, displayed driver name, and all four 0xD5 parameters.
  2. Open the dump in WinDbg. Microsoft documents the command-line form windbg -y <SymbolPath> -i <ImagePath> -z <DumpFileName>. Replace each angle-bracketed value with your symbol path, image path, and dump filename; do not type the brackets as literal arguments.
  3. Run the verbose analysis. At the debugger prompt, enter !analyze -v. Record the probable cause, named module, faulting instruction, and stack frames. A “probably caused by” line is a hypothesis to validate, not a substitute for reading the stack.
  4. Display the raw bug-check data. Run .bugcheck and compare its code and parameters with your notes. This catches transcription errors and confirms that the dump is the 0xD5 crash you intend to diagnose.
  5. Inspect Verifier state. Run !verifier. Check which verification options were enabled and which drivers were selected. This tells you whether Special Pool was active and whether the test was narrowly targeted or system-wide.
  6. Validate the module. Examine the suspected driver’s timestamp, image name, owner, and nearby stack frames. Compare the module with the hardware or software that installed it. Do not blame a module solely because its name appears somewhere in the stack; establish that its code made the reference or owns the allocation.
  7. Reproduce narrowly. If practical, configure Verifier for only the implicated driver and repeat the workload that triggered the crash. Focused Special Pool testing preserves resources and produces cleaner evidence than verifying every driver at once.

Keep the dump, debugger output, and driver version together when reporting the issue to the vendor. The useful handoff includes the stop code, parameters, suspected module, stack, and the exact operation that reproduced the failure.

How should developers fix the offending driver?

A 0xD5 finding is a defect to correct in the driver, not a generic operating-system cleanup task. The fix must ensure that every path which can use an allocation finishes before the allocation is released.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audit ownership and cleanup

Identify which routine owns the allocation and which routine frees it. Check error paths, unload paths, power transitions, device removal, and cancellation callbacks. A pointer that is valid on the normal path may be stale when teardown races with an outstanding request.

Check synchronization and cancellation

Make teardown wait for queued work, deferred procedure calls, timers, interrupts, and asynchronous I/O that can still hold the pointer. Cancel or drain those users before freeing the object, and make the ownership transition explicit so a second cleanup path cannot free it early.

Retest under the same verifier conditions

Rebuild the driver, select only that driver in Verifier where possible, and run the workload that previously produced 0xD5. The successful result is the absence of the violation under the exercised scenario; it is not proof that every untested path is correct.

How do I turn off Driver Verifier after it crashes?

At an elevated Command Prompt, run:

verifier /reset

Then restart Windows. The reset removes Driver Verifier settings. If Windows crashes before you can reach the desktop, boot into a recovery environment or Safe Mode appropriate to that installation, open an elevated command prompt there, run the same command, and restart normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not leave Verifier enabled casually on a production or everyday gaming computer. Microsoft warns that running it can crash the computer. It is a diagnostic instrument for a controlled test, not a background performance or security setting.

Should I verify one driver or all drivers?

Approach Evidence quality Risk and resource use When it fits
One suspected driver with Special Pool High: the dump is easier to attribute to a named module. Lower than broad verification; fewer allocations compete for Special Pool. After a dump, blue-screen name, or stack points to a particular driver.
A small, related group of drivers Moderate to high: useful when several components from one vendor interact. Higher than a single target and potentially slower. When ownership is shared or the first targeted run does not reproduce the failure.
All drivers Lower attribution quality if several modules fail under pressure. Highest: Special Pool resources can be exhausted and performance can suffer. Only on a test/debug system when you have a specific reason and a recovery plan.
Generic updater or repair utility Low: it may change software without identifying the freed allocation. Changes can be difficult to reverse and do not diagnose the bug. Not a substitute for dump analysis; use the vendor’s current or previous driver deliberately.

Targeting is both safer and more informative. Broad verification can consume Special Pool resources, alter timing, and create additional crashes that obscure the original failure.

What should a consumer do when the blue screen names a driver?

Write down the exact module name and the stop code before taking action. Then identify the hardware or application that installed that driver and obtain the current package from its vendor. If the crashes began immediately after an update, rolling back to the previously working package is a reversible diagnostic step.

  • Disconnect or disable recently installed hardware only long enough to test whether the crash stops.
  • Undo a recent driver or firmware change when Windows provides a rollback option, and record the version you restored.
  • Reproduce the workload that triggers the crash—such as launching a game, waking from sleep, or attaching a device—one change at a time.
  • Keep the dump and the driver version for vendor support; do not delete them after the first successful boot.

If no driver is named, do not select a random system file as the culprit. Have the dump analyzed, because the kernel reporting module can be present even when a third-party driver owns the memory-lifetime error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What mistakes make 0xD5 troubleshooting worse?

  • Enabling every verifier option on a daily-use PC: this can create a crash loop and exhaust resources. Use a test system or a targeted driver selection.
  • Assuming ntoskrnl.exe is guilty: it is often the component that detects the violation, not the owner of the freed allocation.
  • Reading only the “probably caused by” line: validate the module with the stack, timestamp, parameters, and !verifier output.
  • Running cleanup software as a fix: a memory-lifetime defect requires a corrected driver or a controlled rollback, not removal of unrelated files.
  • Changing several drivers at once: you lose the ability to tell which change altered the crash and may make a vendor report unusable.
  • Ignoring recovery before starting Verifier: know how to enter Safe Mode or recovery tools and reset settings with verifier /reset before testing.

What is the practical diagnosis?

0xD5 is valuable because it narrows a vague blue screen to a specific class of kernel-driver error: a reference after memory was freed, caught by Special Pool. The reliable path is dump-first analysis, targeted reproduction, and a driver-level correction or rollback. Treat the stop code as evidence about memory ownership and timing, not as a verdict against Windows or your hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep playing games while Driver Verifier is enabled?

You can, but it is a poor risk trade-off on an everyday gaming installation. Verifier deliberately changes memory handling and Microsoft warns that it can crash the computer, so use it only for a controlled reproduction with a recovery plan.

What if the crash happens only once and no dump names a driver?

Preserve any dump that was created and record the workload, recent driver changes, and the four bug-check values. A single event without a named module is insufficient to assign blame; collect another dump or have the existing one examined rather than guessing.

Is a driver rollback a permanent fix for 0xD5?

It can be a practical workaround when the failure began with a specific release, but it does not repair the underlying code. Keep the version number and report the dump to the vendor so a corrected release can be evaluated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the same driver pass normal use but fail under Special Pool?

The bug may depend on timing, teardown, cancellation, or memory reuse that ordinary execution does not expose. Special Pool changes allocation placement and guards the freed region, making the stale access fault close to the offending operation.
