The 60-second answer
dsccorer.dll is almost certainly the case-insensitive filename DscCoreR.dll, a Microsoft Windows component associated with Desired State Configuration, or DSC. Public file inventories usually place it here:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
C:WindowsSystem32dsc
There is no verified standalone Microsoft download for this DLL. Do not copy it from a random DLL website and do not start with Visual C++ or DirectX repairs. First install pending Windows updates, then repair the Windows component store with DISM and run System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish.
Microsoft describes DSC as a Windows configuration-management technology, but public documentation for this exact DLL is limited. The error can result from a missing or corrupted Windows file, an incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, a missing dependency, or broader component-store damage.

What the error means
Windows normally treats filenames without regard to capitalization. Therefore, dsccorer.dll and DscCoreR.dll are generally references to the same filename, not two separate components.
The message does not always prove that this exact DLL is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows found the named file but could not load one of its dependencies. A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or tampering.
The file is associated with Microsoft’s DSC technology. It should not automatically be treated as a game DLL, an Adobe component, a Visual C++ Redistributable file, or a DirectX file. No dependable public evidence identifies one particular game or application as the universal cause.
Check the path before repairing anything
The expected path reported by public file inventories is:
%windir%System32dsc
To inspect it:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
text
C:WindowsSystem32dsc
- Press Enter.
- Look for
DscCoreR.dll.
If the folder or file is absent, continue with Windows Update and the DISM/SFC repair below. Do not fill the gap by downloading a replacement.
If the file exists somewhere outside the Windows directory, do not assume it is genuine. Right-click it, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if one is available. An unexpected unsigned copy, especially in an application’s temporary or download directory, deserves a malware scan rather than manual copying into System32.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates
An incomplete, pending, or rolled-back update can leave Windows components unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Click Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every offered update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the application or service that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Click Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If Windows Update reports an error, restart once more and check again. If servicing remains stuck, proceed to DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly launching the affected program.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when protected Windows files are missing or corrupted. DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source, while SFC checks protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes.
- Then run:
bat
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reopen the program or service that triggered the error.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error disappears after restarting, the repair worked.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again after confirming that Windows is connected to the internet, restart, and run SFC once more. If both tools continue reporting unrepaired corruption, move to System Restore or Windows recovery rather than downloading dsccorer.dll.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to see what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the affected Windows problems and show what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in tools remain the appropriate first repair step.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined the file. Check the record before assuming deletion.

Only consider restoring a quarantined item if its path is the expected Windows location, the Windows installation is trustworthy, and the detection is clearly a false positive. Do not restore an arbitrary copy found in a download folder.

If you restore the file, Defender may detect it again unless you explicitly allow it. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to replace a DLL. If the file was unexpectedly replaced, repeatedly quarantined, unsigned, or located outside the Windows directory, run a full malware scan and investigate the system before restoring anything.
Fix 4: Check dependencies and the triggering program
If the error says “The specified module could not be found” while DscCoreR.dll is visibly present, a dependent DLL may be missing. The full path and the program that launched the error are important.
Record:
- The exact error text
- The full path shown in the message
- Your Windows version and build
- The application, service, task, or management workflow that triggered it
- Whether the issue affects every user account or only one
If only one enterprise-management workflow produces the error, the problem may involve DSC configuration, WMI, or a damaged management stack rather than a general application installation.
If only one Windows account is affected, create a temporary local account and test there. A profile-specific problem can imitate a system DLL failure. Do not copy system files between user profiles.

A 32-bit process may require a 32-bit component, while a 64-bit process requires a 64-bit component. Do not infer the correct file solely from whether Windows itself is 64-bit.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries. SysWOW64 is generally used for 32-bit compatibility files. Windows file-system redirection makes this naming confusing, so manually moving a DLL between these folders can make the problem worse.
The exact current architecture and version mapping for DscCoreR.dll has not been publicly established. Historical third-party inventories mention an older 32-bit copy and an older version, but those details should not be treated as a universal specification for current Windows installations.
Fix 6: Use System Restore if repair fails
If the problem began after an update, driver installation, configuration change, or system modification, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review likely changes.
- Continue only after backing up important work.
- Complete the restore and allow Windows to restart.
- Test the affected program.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back system files, drivers, updates, settings, and installed programs.
If no suitable restore point exists, use Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 or the corresponding Windows recovery options on Windows 10. Back up important files before using repair or installation media. A repair installation or Windows reinstallation is a later step for broader corruption, not the first response to a single missing filename.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 dsccorer.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. DscCoreR.dll is documented here as a Windows DSC-related component, not as a self-registering COM server. Registration is therefore not an evidence-based repair and may produce another error without restoring the missing component.

Avoid random DLL downloads
Downloading dsccorer.dll from an unofficial DLL site is unsafe and often ineffective. The file may have the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, different exported functions, no trustworthy signature, or malicious contents. Even a clean copy may not fix a missing dependency or damaged component store.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows recovery media instead. If a third-party program genuinely supplied the file, repair that program only through its official installer or support channel. There is no verified official standalone Microsoft download for this DLL.
Should you reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX
Not as the first step. There is no reliable evidence connecting this specific Windows DSC component to a particular Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, game, or Adobe product.
Reinstall a runtime only when the application vendor specifically identifies that runtime or a separate error names it. Otherwise, repair Windows itself first.
Driver updates and Device Manager
Driver reinstallation is not a primary fix for a missing DSC component. Consider it only when the error began immediately after installing a device-management or vendor package and the error identifies that package.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Update driver.
- Use Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver changes.
Avoid removing unrelated drivers to chase this DLL error. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of checking many device drivers and identify outdated entries, while the full version performs driver installation; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing Windows or the program that supplied the file.
Frequently asked questions
What does DSC mean?
DSC means Desired State Configuration, a Microsoft technology for defining and managing a Windows system’s configuration.
Is dsccorer.dll a Windows file?
DscCoreR.dll is associated with Windows DSC and is commonly reported under %windir%System32dsc. Microsoft does not publish a complete universal version, size, and architecture matrix for this exact DLL, so its presence should not be assumed on every Windows release.
Why does the error use lowercase letters?
Windows filenames are normally case-insensitive. dsccorer.dll is the lowercase form of DscCoreR.dll, not necessarily a different file.
Can I copy the file into System32?
No. A manually downloaded DLL can be malicious or incompatible, and copying it does not repair dependencies or the Windows component store.
Will SFC always restore it?
No. SFC can repair protected files when a valid Windows component source is available, but it may report unrepaired corruption. If that happens, use DISM, System Restore, or Windows recovery.
What should I provide when asking for support?
Provide the exact error text, Windows version and build, full path shown in the message, and the application or service that triggered it. Also mention whether the file is missing from C:WindowsSystem32dsc, whether Protection History shows a quarantine event, and what DISM and SFC reported.
