hg30t.dll Errors: Trace the Old HyperTerminal Install Safely

hg30t.dll errors usually appear when HyperTerminal or software bundled with it cannot find a required application file. You may see messages such as “HG30t.dll could not be found,” “Failed to load HG30t.dll,” or “The application has failed to start because HG30t.dll was not found.”

The 60-second answer

hg30t.dll is a 32-bit application DLL associated with Hilgraeve’s HyperTerminal software. It is not a normal Windows system file, Microsoft Visual C++ component, DirectX file, .NET component, or general device-driver DLL.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The safest fix is to identify the HyperTerminal installation that requested it, then repair or reinstall that exact program from a legitimate Hilgraeve installer or your own original backup. Do not download an isolated copy from a DLL website or copy it into System32.

Hilgraeve currently distributes HyperTerminal Private Edition separately from Windows. The current product page lists version 7.1 for Windows XP through Windows 11, but it does not publicly confirm that this exact release contains hg30t.dll. If you need an older release, use its legitimate installer or a known-good backup rather than mixing files from different versions.

What is hg30t.dll

Public PE metadata identifies the file as:

  • Description: HyperTerminal Applet Library
  • Internal name: HG30t
  • Product: HG30t Library
  • Reported file version: 7.03 or 7.0.3.0
  • Architecture: PE32, meaning 32-bit Windows code
  • Reported folder: C:Program Files (x86)HyperTerminal

The reported folder is useful when tracing the problem, but it is not proof that every installation uses that exact path. Multiple HyperTerminal editions, old Windows installations, and application-specific bundles can place files differently.

Windows previously included HyperTerminal in older releases. Later Windows versions did not include it as a normal built-in component, so Windows Update is not expected to supply this third-party DLL.

Why the error started

The likely causes are:

  1. HyperTerminal was incompletely installed or uninstalled.
  2. An antivirus product quarantined the DLL.
  3. A cleanup utility deleted an application file.
  4. The file belongs to an older 32-bit program being run on a newer Windows installation.
  5. The file exists but is corrupted or belongs to a different release.
  6. A disk problem or failed system change damaged the installation.
  7. The error comes from a bundled or private copy of HyperTerminal rather than the main installation.

If only one application reports the error, that application is the best place to start. The DLL may be private to that program and may not be intended for system-wide use.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning HyperTerminal program

This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to an application, not Windows.

If HyperTerminal appears in Installed apps

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for HyperTerminal.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what Windows offers.
  7. Run Repair if available.
  8. Restart Windows and test the program.

If there is no repair option:

  1. Write down any connection settings you need, including COM port, baud rate, parity, and terminal settings.
  2. Uninstall HyperTerminal.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Install the same product from its legitimate Hilgraeve installer or your original licensed media.
  5. Start HyperTerminal again.

Do not assume that installing a newer edition will preserve every setting or contain the same internal files. If an older business application specifically expects hg30t.dll, matching the original application version is safer than mixing an old executable with a new DLL.

If HyperTerminal is not listed

Search for the executable or the program that displays the error:

  1. Press Windows + E.
  2. In the search box, type hg30t.dll.
  3. Note every result and its parent folder.
  4. Look for a nearby HyperTerminal executable or application folder.
  5. Right-click the application that fails and select Properties.
  6. Check the Shortcut tab and inspect Target.
  7. Use the installer associated with that program to repair or reinstall it.

If the error appears immediately after launching an unrelated program, do not assume Windows is missing a system file. That program may contain an old HyperTerminal component or may be calling a private installation directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful repair normally means the application starts without the missing-file message and reaches its normal connection or configuration screen. If the message changes to “entry point not found,” the file is present but the version is incompatible. Reinstall the parent program again rather than replacing individual DLLs.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or isolate an application DLL after an update or scan.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving hg30t.dll or the HyperTerminal installation folder.
  5. Check the detected path, file name, and originating application.
  6. Restore the file only if it came from your legitimate HyperTerminal installation and you recognize the location.
  7. Update Windows Security and run a full scan.

Third-party antivirus products have their own quarantine screens. Open the product’s history or quarantine section and verify the path before restoring anything.

Do not disable antivirus merely to force a DLL into place. If the file came from an unofficial download, remove it and reinstall the parent application from a trusted source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Verify the file and its architecture

Available metadata identifies hg30t.dll as PE32, or 32-bit. That matters because a 64-bit application generally cannot load a 32-bit in-process DLL. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can run many 32-bit applications, but the application and its dependencies still need to match.

To inspect a recovered file:

  1. Right-click hg30t.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it exists.
  4. Select the signature and choose Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the signer matches the expected vendor.
  6. On the Details tab, compare the description, product name, and file version with the original application.

A missing signature is not automatically proof of malware, especially with old software, but it is a reason to rely on the original installer rather than an isolated replacement.

A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an invalid replacement, a wrong architecture, or an incompatible version. It does not prove that a Visual C++ runtime is missing. Remove any replacement DLL you downloaded and reinstall the owning application.

Never copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 as a general fix. Those folders are not interchangeable storage locations, and Windows DLL search rules depend on the calling process, architecture, and application directory. A random copy can also make another program load the wrong version.

Fix 4: Restore from a legitimate backup or installer

If the original installation folder was deleted or damaged, restore the complete application rather than only the DLL.

Use one of these sources:

  • The original Hilgraeve HyperTerminal installer you legitimately own
  • A verified backup of the complete HyperTerminal installation
  • An organization’s approved software archive
  • A repair or reinstall option provided by the application’s installer

Before restoring, record the original path and check the file’s publisher and signature where available. Do not combine an executable from one HyperTerminal release with hg30t.dll from another.

If the application was removed during an upgrade, reinstall the compatible HyperTerminal edition instead of copying files from an old Windows installation. Old Windows system folders can contain dependencies that are absent from Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore an application-owned Hilgraeve DLL, so they should not be your first response to an isolated hg30t.dll error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use them when other Windows features are also failing, system files are damaged, or the problem followed storage corruption.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test HyperTerminal again.

DISM may require Windows Update or another valid repair source. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the system again, but do not expect it to recreate hg30t.dll. If both commands complete without fixing the application, return to repairing or reinstalling HyperTerminal.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM makes it unclear what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version. Reinstalling the HyperTerminal program remains the definitive fix for this application-owned DLL.

Fix 6: Check updates, System Restore, and drivers

Install pending Windows updates and restart:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart and test the application.

If the error began immediately after a known update, cleanup operation, or software installation, System Restore may help:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select an appropriate restore point created before the failure.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Start the restore.

System Restore can remove recently installed applications, updates, and drivers. It is a fallback, not a replacement for reinstalling HyperTerminal.

Device Manager is relevant only when the program also cannot see a modem, COM port, USB serial adapter, or other hardware. It will not normally repair hg30t.dll.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and Modems.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs one.

When identifying stale drivers across several devices is the manual bottleneck, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; driver installation features are provided by the full version. A driver update will not replace the HyperTerminal DLL itself.

Why regsvr32 hg30t.dll usually does nothing

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal application or runtime DLL is not automatically a COM server, and there is no verified evidence that hg30t.dll requires registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command:

regsvr32 hg30t.dll

may produce an entry-point error or simply fail to address the missing dependency. Do not register the file unless the original vendor documentation specifically instructs you to do so.

If you no longer need HyperTerminal

HyperTerminal is primarily used for serial COM connections, dial-up modem access, and Telnet-style terminal sessions. If the old program is no longer required, uninstall the broken HyperTerminal installation instead of rebuilding it.

For current work, choose a maintained terminal application that supports the connection type you actually need. Serial-console, Telnet, and SSH requirements are different, so confirm that the replacement supports your device and connection method. Do not copy old HyperTerminal executables and DLLs into a new terminal program’s folder.

FAQ

Is hg30t.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is associated with Hilgraeve HyperTerminal and should be treated as an application-owned DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

There is no verified evidence that it belongs to any of those runtimes. Installing them is not a general fix.

Can I download hg30t.dll by itself?

Do not use random DLL download sites. The file may contain malware, be corrupted, belong to the wrong HyperTerminal release, or have the wrong architecture. Restore it through the original installer or a verified backup.

Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?

No. The correct location depends on the owning application and process architecture. Reinstall the parent program into its intended folder.

Why does the file show as 32-bit on a 64-bit PC?

A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications. The important issue is that the calling application and its in-process DLLs use compatible architecture.

Will SFC restore hg30t.dll?

Normally no. SFC protects Windows components, while hg30t.dll is associated with a third-party application.

What if the error says “entry point not found”?

The DLL probably exists but is the wrong version or is incompatible with the executable. Reinstall the exact parent application instead of replacing the DLL again.

What should I do if HyperTerminal is unavailable?

Use a legitimate Hilgraeve installer or backup if you need that application. Otherwise, use a maintained terminal program suited to your serial, Telnet, or SSH requirement.
