- “The program can’t start because dskquoui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting dskquoui.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading dskquoui.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dskquoui.dll was not found.”
- “dskquoui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The 60-second answer
dskquoui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Windows Shell Disk Quota UI DLL. It provides graphical support for NTFS disk quotas, which let Windows enforce per-user storage limits and warning thresholds. Microsoft documents the underlying quota system in its Disk Quota Limits documentation.

Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. First install pending Windows updates, then repair the Windows component store with DISM and scan protected files with SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs or supplies the source that SFC may need to restore protected Windows files.

Where dskquoui.dll should be located
On a standard Windows installation, the native file is normally here:
%windir%System32dskquoui.dll
On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit system-file counterpart is normally stored here:
%windir%SysWOW64dskquoui.dll
This naming is confusing: System32 holds native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 holds 32-bit system files. Windows explains this architecture behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not choose a file based only on its size or version number. Historical Windows builds include several 32-bit and 64-bit variants, but the correct copy depends on your installed Windows build and architecture.
Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
- A protected Windows file was corrupted or deleted.
- An interrupted update left Windows servicing incomplete.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A cleanup utility removed or altered a system component.
- A system crash damaged the component store or file system.
- A dependency of
dskquoui.dllis missing, even though the named file exists. - A legacy program or shell extension is damaged.
- Someone copied an incompatible DLL into a Windows directory.
If only one old application reports the error, that application may be triggering the problem rather than owning the DLL. dskquoui.dll is a Windows component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
An incomplete or failed update can leave a system file unavailable or mismatched.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Test the application or Windows operation that produced the error.
If Windows Update itself fails, restart once and check again. If the issue began immediately after a failed update, continue with the repair commands below before attempting to remove the update.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most useful repair sequence when dskquoui.dll is missing, damaged, or in the wrong state.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it repaired the image, restart Windows and continue with SFC.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The useful results are:

Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions recommend using DISM before SFC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you repeatedly run repair commands without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the proper first-line repair path.
Restart after SFC completes. A repaired file may not be available to the affected shell or application until the next boot.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
A legitimate filename does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe. Malware can use a familiar filename, and antivirus software can also quarantine a genuine Windows file after a false positive.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
dskquoui.dll. - Check the original path shown for the detection.
Only consider restoring a file if it was located in the expected Windows directory and you can verify its Microsoft signature. Do not restore a copy that came from Downloads, a temporary folder, an unofficial installer, or a DLL download site. Scan the system and use DISM/SFC instead.

Fix 4: Verify the file and its digital signature
If the file exists, check its location and signature before assuming it is genuine.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Locate
dskquoui.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid digital signature and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
On 64-bit Windows, repeat the check in %windir%SysWOW64 if the affected program is 32-bit.
A valid signature is useful evidence, but it does not make a file in an unexpected directory trustworthy. A file with the right name in an application folder, Downloads, or a temporary directory should be treated cautiously.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Back up application data first. Do not assume that reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore dskquoui.dll; those packages do not own this Windows component.
If the application is old, check whether it has a newer release that supports your Windows version. Run its installer as administrator only when the developer’s instructions require it.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair utility. It works with DLLs that expose the registration entry point DllRegisterServer. Available export information for dskquoui.dll does not show that normal registration export, so a command such as this is expected to fail or be irrelevant:
regsvr32 dskquoui.dll
Registering the file will not reconstruct a missing Windows component, repair its dependencies, or make an incompatible build work. Microsoft explains this limitation in its regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Use Windows servicing instead.
Fix 7: Check drivers only if the timing points there
A driver is not the usual owner of dskquoui.dll, but a recent storage, filter, or shell-related driver change can expose broader Windows corruption. If the error started after a driver installation:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver date and provider.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began after the update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver and follow the Windows prompt.
- Restart and test again.
Do not remove storage or security drivers casually. If Device Manager reports an error code, resolve that device problem separately from the DLL repair.

It is optional, and it does not replace DISM, SFC, or an official device-manufacturer package.
Fix 8: Supply DISM with a matching repair source
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If it cannot find the source, use a Windows installation or repair source that matches the installed edition and build.
The general form is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching repair source. Do not use a random Windows folder from another computer. A mismatched source can leave the component store inconsistent.
Microsoft documents this process in Repair a Windows Image. Run sfc /scannow again after DISM completes.
Fix 9: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
If the problem began after a driver, cleanup utility, update, or application installation, System Restore may be appropriate.

- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal documents. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.
If Windows will not boot:
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
- Try System Restore.
- If startup itself is failing, try Startup Repair.
Microsoft lists these options in its Windows recovery documentation.
If repair still fails, back up personal data and consider an in-place Windows repair or Reset this PC. Choose the recovery option carefully, because some reset paths remove applications and may remove personal files.
Should you download dskquoui.dll?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with a broken signature. Copying a replacement into System32 can also create version, permissions, dependency, and component-store problems.
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows Recovery, and an official Windows installation source. If a single application is damaged, use that application developer’s official installer instead.
FAQ
Is dskquoui.dll a game or runtime file?
No. It is a Microsoft Windows component for the graphical disk-quota interface. An application may trigger the loader error, but that does not mean the application created the file.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not specifically for this file. Install or repair those runtimes only when the affected application explicitly requires them or reports a separate runtime error.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The message can refer to a missing dependency rather than the named DLL itself. DISM/SFC, application repair, and checking the event context are safer than replacing the visible file manually.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
Generally no. Windows build, edition, architecture, servicing state, permissions, and signatures must match. Let Windows restore its own component.
Is dskquoui.dll essential for Windows to boot?
Not universally. Damage may affect shell or quota-related functions without preventing startup. Treat the error seriously, but do not assume it identifies the cause of every boot failure.
