“idbat32.dll is missing,” “idbat32.dll not found,” and “This application failed to start because idbat32.dll was not found” all point to the same basic problem: an older application cannot find one of its own files. idbat32.dll is not a normal Windows system DLL.
The 60-second answer
idbat32.dll is a 32-bit batch-operations component of the Borland Database Engine, or BDE. Older database programs built with Borland or Delphi tools may install it beside their executable or inside a shared BDE folder.

The safest fix is to identify the application named in the error, then repair or reinstall that application from its original developer installer. Do not download a standalone copy from a random DLL website, copy it into System32 or SysWOW64, or register it with regsvr32.
BDE is deprecated and has no native 64-bit support. A known BDE build is a 32-bit Intel 80386 DLL, but its exact size and version are not universal. The correct copy must match the application and its other BDE files.

What causes the error
The usual causes are:
- The legacy application installation is incomplete or damaged.
- A cleanup utility deleted an unused-looking BDE file.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The application was copied to another PC without its complete BDE installation.
- A companion BDE module or database alias is missing.
- The application is being run in an environment it does not support.
- The file is present but is the wrong architecture or version.
- Windows has a separate system-corruption problem.
The filename does not identify one universal program. Documented BDE applications include laboratory, database, translation, configuration, and other older business tools. Look at the executable named by the error and the folder around it rather than guessing from the DLL name.
Fix 1: Identify the application and repair it
This is the highest-probability fix because idbat32.dll belongs to the program that installed it.
Find the requesting executable
- Read the error dialog carefully and note the application name.
- If the dialog only names
idbat32.dll, open Task Manager withCtrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details and look for the program you launched.
- Right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- Inspect that folder for other BDE files, including names such as
idapi32.dll,idbas32.dll,idpdx32.dll,iddbas32.dll, oridr20009.dll.
If several of these files are together, you have likely found the application’s BDE installation. Do not replace only idbat32.dll; BDE components commonly depend on one another.
Use Windows repair
- Press
Win+Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test it again.
Some traditional desktop programs do not provide a Repair button. In that case, open Control Panel, select Programs, choose Programs and Features, right-click the application, and look for Repair or Change.
A successful repair normally restores the complete BDE file set and any installer-created configuration. If the same error remains, continue with a full reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall from the original vendor package
Use the original installer, installation disc, managed deployment package, or a download supplied by the application’s developer. If the application came with a separate BDE setup program, run that package as well.
- Back up the application’s database files and exports.
- Record any database aliases or connection settings shown in the application.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the affected application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Install the application into its intended location.
- If the installer offers a BDE component, select it.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application and test the database functions.
Do not copy the program folder from another PC unless the vendor specifically documents that deployment method. A copied executable may lack BDE configuration, registry settings, aliases, permissions, and companion modules.

Reinstall the complete application or its complete BDE package rather than downloading each DLL separately.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine an old DLL because legacy applications often use outdated installers or uncommon file structures. A detection does not automatically prove that the file is malicious, but you should verify its origin before restoring it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with the application folder.
- Check the path, detection name, and time.
- Restore the file only if it came from the trusted original installer and the application itself is known to be legitimate.
- Add an exclusion only if the vendor or your organization’s administrator approves it.
If the file was obtained from an unknown source, do not restore it. Remove the questionable copy and reinstall the application from its official source. Never disable antivirus merely to obtain a DLL.
Fix 4: Check the 32-bit compatibility boundary
idbat32.dll is associated with a 32-bit BDE installation. BDE does not provide native 64-bit support, so installing a 32-bit legacy application on a 64-bit edition of Windows requires the application’s supported 32-bit components.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Windows stores 32-bit system components in places such as SysWOW64, but that does not make SysWOW64 the correct destination for this file. System32 is not correct either. The file normally belongs beside the legacy application or in a BDE directory, such as a vendor-created shared BDE folder.
Check the executable’s architecture and installation structure:
- Open the application folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile and select Properties. - Open the Details tab if available.
- Compare the executable and DLLs supplied by the same installer.
- Reinstall the vendor’s 32-bit package if the application was moved from another computer.
If the application is extremely old, it may also require compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for only if the vendor recommends it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the application requires it to access its database folder.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Administrator mode can hide permission problems without fixing the underlying installation. Use it as a compatibility measure, not as a replacement for reinstalling BDE.
Fix 5: Restore BDE configuration and companion files
A complete BDE installation can still fail if its database aliases or configuration were lost during migration.
Check whether the application has a database setup utility, configuration file, or vendor-specific administration program. Restore settings from the application’s documented backup rather than inventing new paths.

Also check the application folder for companion BDE modules. idbat32.dll alone may not be enough to start the program. If the error changes to another BDE file after reinstalling, that is evidence that the BDE deployment or configuration is incomplete.
Do not manually mix DLLs from different applications. Even when filenames match, different BDE releases and supporting files may not be interchangeable.

Fix 6: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified reason to register idbat32.dll that way. It is a BDE engine component, not normally a COM in-process server.
Running commands such as these can produce misleading errors without repairing the application:
regsvr32 idbat32.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32idbat32.dll
If the file is missing, registration cannot recreate it. If it exists but will not load, investigate the application’s architecture, companion modules, permissions, and antivirus history instead.

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party BDE DLL, but they are reasonable when Windows itself is reporting corruption, updates are failing, or several unrelated system files are damaged.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that component repair completed, but the application may still show the same error because these commands do not supply BDE files.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM while ignoring the original application installer will not fix a missing idbat32.dll. If manually hunting corrupted Windows components is taking time without revealing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows detected problems, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the BDE application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.
Fix 8: Check drivers only when the failure is broader
A display, storage, chipset, or printer driver does not normally install idbat32.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the legacy application fails alongside broader hardware, storage, printer, or device errors.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read Device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver changes.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s support page when Windows cannot find an appropriate driver. If checking a large list of devices manually is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation requires the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that supplied idbat32.dll.

What not to do
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Do not download
idbat32.dllfrom a generic DLL repository. - Do not assume a file with the same name has the correct BDE version.
- Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSystem32. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET expecting them to contain this BDE file.
- Do not use Windows Update as a source for a third-party application DLL.
- Do not disable antivirus to force an unknown file into the application folder.
- Do not use
regsvr32unless the application vendor explicitly says the file is a registrable COM server.
The safe sources are the original application developer, the vendor’s installation media, an organization-managed software archive, or a vendor-supplied BDE installer. There is no Microsoft redistributable that normally supplies idbat32.dll.
Frequently asked questions
Is idbat32.dll a Windows file?
No. It belongs to the Borland Database Engine and is normally installed with a legacy application. It should not be treated like a protected Windows DLL.
Is idbat32.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The identified BDE build is 32-bit. BDE itself has no native 64-bit support, so the dependent application must use its supported 32-bit installation and environment.
Which program uses idbat32.dll?
There is no single universal program. The executable named in the error and the surrounding installation folder are the best clues. Documented BDE applications include older laboratory and database-related tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I download just this file?
You should not. A standalone copy may be malicious, mismatched, or missing the other BDE modules and configuration the application needs.
Does idbat32.dll need registration?
Usually no. It is not normally registered with regsvr32. Repair or reinstall the complete application instead.
What if the file exists but still will not load?
Check whether it came from the correct installer, whether companion BDE modules are present, whether antivirus blocked it, and whether the application is running in a compatible 32-bit environment. A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible legacy binary.
What information should I give support?
Provide the application name, executable path, Windows edition and architecture, complete error text, whether the file was quarantined, and whether reinstalling the original application changed the error. Also back up legacy database files before making further changes.
