Yes, Dune: Awakening runs on Steam Deck. Funcom made it officially Steam Deck Verified on August 19, 2025. But Verified means the game meets Valve’s compatibility baseline—not that it runs at high settings or a locked 60 frames per second.

For the best-looking, highest-frame-rate experience, GeForce NOW can be the better choice when you have a strong, low-latency connection. Native Steam Deck play remains the better all-purpose option for portability, predictable controls, simple setup, and freedom from a cloud-gaming subscription.

The short verdict

  • Choose native Steam Deck play if you value portability, local input response, simple Steam integration, and reliable access when your internet is poor.
  • Choose GeForce NOW if you own the Steam version, have excellent Wi-Fi or wired internet, and care more about image quality, higher settings, and docked performance.
  • Choose a more powerful Windows handheld or gaming PC if you want high-end local performance without streaming latency or cloud-service restrictions.

The most flexible solution is to install the game locally for travel and use GeForce NOW at home or while the Deck is connected to a TV.

Is Dune: Awakening officially supported on Steam Deck?

Yes. Funcom announced that Dune: Awakening moved from Steam Deck Playable to Steam Deck Verified on August 19, 2025. The developer says the game met the relevant requirements for controller functionality, Steam Deck controller icons, readable interface text, and performance using the default graphics configuration.

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

That is important because the game is an online open-world survival title with a large world and demanding asset streaming. However, Steam Deck Verified is a compatibility designation, not a universal performance guarantee. It does not promise:

  • a locked 60 FPS;
  • maximum or high graphics settings;
  • identical performance in settlements, combat, sandworm encounters, and large outdoor areas;
  • long battery life or low fan noise;
  • the same results on LCD and OLED Deck models; or
  • a good experience on an external 4K display.

In other words, the badge confirms that the game is a legitimate Deck release. It does not turn the handheld into a desktop gaming PC.

Why the PC requirements do not tell the whole Steam Deck story

The official PC requirements list Windows 10 64-bit or newer, 16GB of RAM, DirectX 12, an SSD, and at least a GTX 1060 6GB or Radeon RX 5600 XT. The recommended configuration rises to an Intel i7-10700K or Ryzen 5 2600X, an RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT, and an NVMe drive. The Steam listing and Funcom’s support page document those Windows requirements.

They are useful context, but they are not a direct Steam Deck benchmark. The Deck runs SteamOS and uses compatibility technology for the Windows release, while its integrated hardware operates within a much tighter power and graphics budget. The Verified status is therefore more meaningful for Deck buyers than a simple comparison between the listed PC components and the handheld’s specifications.

What native Steam Deck play does well

It is the simplest option

Install the game through Steam, launch it from the normal library, and use the Deck’s standard suspend and resume workflow. There is no second client to configure and no cloud membership to manage.

It does not depend on a streaming connection

Native play does not require a constant connection to NVIDIA’s servers. That does not make Dune: Awakening a fully offline game: it is an online survival game, so its own server and internet requirements still apply. But you avoid the additional dependency on streaming bandwidth, routing, packet loss, and GeForce NOW availability.

Local rendering avoids streaming artifacts

A locally rendered image does not become blurry when a household connection is congested, and controls do not acquire the extra round trip introduced by sending input to a remote machine. That makes native play the safer choice for players who are sensitive to latency or who regularly use unreliable Wi-Fi.

Performance is predictable

Once you choose a resolution, upscaling mode, graphics preset, and frame-rate cap, the Deck’s behavior is broadly governed by those local settings. Busy areas can still be more demanding, but the result is not subject to sudden bandwidth drops or a change in cloud-server conditions.

The compromises of native Deck play

The trade-off is rendering headroom. To fit Dune: Awakening into the Deck’s power envelope, you should expect to make compromises in areas such as resolution, shadows, foliage, effects, view distance, and texture quality. The sensible target is a stable configuration rather than simply disabling every limit and chasing a high but inconsistent frame rate.

Valve’s Verified label does not publish a frame-rate table for every location in the game. Without a clearly documented hands-on test—including Deck model, SteamOS version, game version, graphics settings, and scene—specific claims about typical FPS, battery drain, fan noise, loading times, or shader stutter should not be treated as universal facts.

The OLED model improves the display and can offer battery-life advantages in some workloads, but it does not fundamentally transform the game’s rendering performance. Internal SSD storage is also preferable for a large, frequently streamed open-world game; a microSD card may work, but storage speed and loading behavior can vary by card.

What GeForce NOW changes

GeForce NOW runs the game on NVIDIA’s remote hardware and streams the resulting video to the Steam Deck. The Deck becomes the display and input device rather than the machine doing the demanding rendering.

That can provide:

  • higher graphics presets;
  • higher frame-rate targets;
  • more headroom in demanding scenes;
  • less local GPU and CPU load;
  • less need to reserve Deck storage for the game; and
  • a stronger case for playing on a large TV or monitor.

NVIDIA advertises RTX 5080 cloud performance for supported experiences and says GeForce NOW supports more than 4,500 PC games overall, but hardware, availability, server location, membership features, and title support can vary. NVIDIA also lists Dune: Awakening in its RTX 5080 and Reflex game-support material. That indicates service-side support; it does not mean a Steam Deck can output 1440p at 240 FPS.

With an Ultimate membership, NVIDIA advertises streaming to Steam Deck at up to 90 FPS. “Up to” is important: the actual result depends on the game, plan, server, network, display, region, and session conditions. A Deck’s internal display also cannot show every resolution or refresh-rate mode available from the cloud computer.

GeForce NOW requirements: speed is not enough

NVIDIA recommends at least:

  • 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 FPS;
  • 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS;
  • 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS; and
  • less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center.

Those figures are starting points, not a guarantee of a good action-game experience. A connection can pass a download-speed test and still perform badly because of Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, bufferbloat, unstable latency, evening congestion, or poor routing to the selected data center. NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi where possible. See the current GeForce NOW system requirements before subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meaningful test, compare 5GHz Wi-Fi with Ethernet through a dock, try the connection during peak household usage, and play for at least 15–30 minutes. Watch for image breakup, sudden bitrate drops, delayed controls, and disconnects—not just the headline download speed. NVIDIA’s under-80ms figure is a service requirement; lower and more stable latency is preferable for a responsive action game.

How to install GeForce NOW on Steam Deck

  1. Switch the Deck to Desktop Mode.
  2. Open NVIDIA’s official GeForce NOW download page and download the Steam Deck installer.
  3. Extract the download if it arrives as an archive.
  4. Run the setup script and approve execution if SteamOS requests permission.
  5. Return to Gaming Mode.
  6. Find GeForce NOW in the Steam Library and launch it.
  7. Sign in and connect the Steam account that owns Dune: Awakening.
  8. Select the game and start a session.

NVIDIA’s installer adds the service to the Steam Library so it can be launched from Gaming Mode. Interface labels and shortcut behavior can change, so use the current NVIDIA page rather than relying on an old guide.

If installation or detection fails

  • Re-download the installer directly from NVIDIA.
  • Confirm that the downloaded file was extracted before you run it.
  • Use Desktop Mode for installation rather than trying to install from Gaming Mode.
  • Update SteamOS and confirm that the Deck is online.
  • Remove the failed non-Steam shortcut and run the official installer again.
  • Try GeForce NOW in a browser as a fallback if the native shortcut misbehaves.
  • Test the network within GeForce NOW before blaming the game.
  • If the game is missing, verify that the connected Steam account owns it and that the title is currently available in the service catalog.

Do you need to buy the game twice?

Normally, no second copy of the Steam edition is required. GeForce NOW generally connects to the PC game libraries you already own, so you still need to buy Dune: Awakening on Steam, but the service is not itself a replacement game license. Confirm the storefront and edition before buying: ownership on one PC store does not automatically grant ownership of another store’s edition.

GeForce NOW memberships are separate from the game purchase. NVIDIA’s premium plans offer features such as higher resolutions, higher frame rates, longer sessions, priority access, and Install-to-Play capabilities, but exact benefits and availability vary by plan and region. Check the live membership page rather than relying on an undated price.

Who should choose each option?

Choose native Steam Deck play if you are a commuter or traveler

Local installation is the better baseline when connectivity changes from place to place. Remember that the game itself is online, but native play removes an extra cloud-streaming dependency and avoids image degradation when a hotspot or public network becomes congested.

Choose GeForce NOW if your home network is genuinely strong

A stable 5GHz connection or Ethernet, low latency, and minimal packet loss can make GeForce NOW the visually superior option. It is especially attractive if you already pay for a suitable membership and want to use the Deck as a lightweight endpoint.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Choose GeForce NOW for docked play—conditionally

The difference is most apparent on a large TV or monitor, where low resolution and reduced settings are easier to notice. A dock with Ethernet can also make the setup more stable. Do not assume that a cloud service’s advertised 1440p or 240-FPS capability will appear unchanged on the Deck or on every connected display.

Choose native play if you are latency-sensitive

Cloud streaming can look sharper and still feel worse if controls arrive late or inconsistently. Players who notice latency, compression, or connection fluctuations should prefer the local version even if it uses lower settings.

Consider a stronger Windows handheld or gaming PC if you want local high-end performance

A more powerful Windows handheld or desktop PC avoids both the Deck’s local performance ceiling and GeForce NOW’s streaming compromises. The trade-offs are usually higher cost, different ergonomics, greater power consumption, or a less console-like software experience. NVIDIA lists devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go among supported GeForce NOW handhelds, but hardware models and prices should be checked separately before purchase.

Important caveats about controls and saves

The native game’s Verified status covers the default controller experience. GeForce NOW adds another application layer, so test the controls you actually use: analog sticks, trackpads, back buttons, Steam Input, the on-screen keyboard, login fields, and controller detection after waking or reconnecting.

NVIDIA says Steam Cloud-supported games retain progress across sessions. Because Dune: Awakening is an online game with server-side progression elements, do not assume every save or account behavior is identical across local and cloud sessions without checking the current game and storefront behavior.

Final recommendation

Dune: Awakening is now a legitimate Steam Deck game, not merely a title that happens to launch. Native play is the best default for most Deck owners because it is simple, portable, predictable, and free from a second recurring service cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GeForce NOW is the better-looking and potentially faster option when the network is excellent, the membership tier supports the desired features, and the Deck is being used at home or docked. It is a conditional upgrade—not a universal replacement for local play. If you want maximum local performance without cloud latency, skip both compromises and use a more powerful handheld or gaming PC.
