Yes—but the important detail is what you mean by “Super Mario 64 in your browser.” Unofficial projects such as sm64js turn the game into a native JavaScript/WebGL browser experience rather than an official Nintendo release. That makes for a remarkably convenient nostalgia hit, but hosted demos can disappear, controls can vary, and the project should not be confused with a legal ROM-download site.
If you want Nintendo-supported access, the dependable alternative is Nintendo’s Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app on Switch or Switch 2 through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

What “Mario 64 in a browser” actually means

Its maintainers say it uses neither traditional emulation nor WebAssembly.
- A WebAssembly or WebGL build: Some projects compile a PC-style port for browsers.
- A partial recreation: Older demos offered only a level or a technical proof of concept.
- A ROM emulator site: These are a separate category and can present both copyright and security concerns.
This article is primarily about sm64js, an unofficial, ongoing browser-port project. It is not made or authorized by Nintendo.
#1 Best Overall
Why sm64js is technically impressive
sm64js aims to run the game through the browser’s JavaScript and WebGL stack. In practical terms, that means a player can potentially launch a 3D Nintendo 64-era game without installing a conventional emulator or native executable.
The achievement is less about proving that a browser can display polygons—modern browsers do that routinely—and more about adapting a complex game codebase and its rendering behavior to a portable web environment. The project’s documentation also references multiplayer and custom game-mode work, although those features depend on the particular build or fork and should not be assumed to exist everywhere.
That combination of low setup and technical novelty is what makes the experience feel special. It is easy to show someone, useful for a short nostalgia session, and interesting even if you are more curious about the engineering than about replaying every star.
How to try it
Start with the sm64js repository and follow its current hosted links. A related hosted project page is available at brohann3214.github.io/sm64js, but browser demos hosted on project or personal pages can change or vanish without notice. The sm64js archive can help distinguish historical project information from a current build.
- Open the project’s current hosted page in a modern desktop browser.
- Wait for the game assets to finish loading.
- Click inside the game window so it receives keyboard focus.
- Test movement, jumping, camera control, and menu or pause controls.
- If the build supports it, connect a controller before loading or refreshing the game and allow browser input access if prompted.
- Enable fullscreen only after confirming that the game responds correctly.
Do not assume that every fork uses the same keys. The repository does not provide one universal control chart for every hosted version, and controls can differ between builds. Likewise, do not assume that a save stored in browser data will survive a refresh, private-browsing session, cleared site data, or a host migration.
Running it locally
Technically comfortable readers can use the repository’s documented development setup:
git clone https://github.com/sm64js/sm64js.git
cd sm64js
npm install
npm run start
After starting the development server, the repository says to open localhost in a browser. This is a work-in-progress project, so the appropriate Node.js environment, dependencies, build behavior, and required assets may change. Local setup is not guaranteed to work identically on every machine.
What makes the browser version worth trying?
- Very little setup: A hosted build can avoid emulator configuration and a traditional installation.
- Broad browser portability: JavaScript and WebGL are designed to work across multiple desktop operating systems, subject to browser and hardware support.
- Easy demonstrations: It is convenient when you want to show the game to someone who does not own an N64.
- Controller potential: Where the specific build supports gamepads properly, analog movement can feel much closer to the console experience than keyboard play.
- Technical curiosity: Running a game of this era through a browser is an appealing example of how far web graphics have come.
The strongest use case is a quick session, demonstration, or technical experiment—not necessarily a flawless long-term substitute for an official release.

The limitations you should expect
Browser behavior varies
Performance depends on the browser, device, graphics hardware, background tabs, and the particular hosted build. Desktop browsers are the safest recommendation. Mobile support can be inconsistent, especially for gamepad input, fullscreen, audio, and pointer-lock behavior.
A browser may also throttle an inactive tab. Audio can behave differently from the original hardware, and a gamepad may not be recognized if it was connected after the page initialized. A controller’s button mapping can vary by browser and device.
The project is still a work in progress
sm64js identifies itself as an ongoing project. A fork may contain different features, levels, fixes, controls, multiplayer support, or bugs. Documentation can lag behind the hosted build, and a page that loads is not necessarily a complete or technically identical version of the original game.

Browser storage is not the same as a cloud save. Clearing cookies or site data, using private browsing, changing hosts, or losing access to a hosted build can remove or strand progress. Treat a browser session as convenient access rather than guaranteed archival storage.

- Super Mario 64, the classic 3D platformer for the Nintendo 64, arrives on the Nintendo DS with all-new features that take advantage of the portable system's dual screens, touch screen, and wireless multiplayer capability. Like the original game, Super Mario 64 DS challenges you to find all the power stars hidden throughout the royal castle in the effort to free Peach imprisoned inside the castle. This time, you can play as Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi, each of whom has unique abilities.
Quick troubleshooting
- The link is dead: Return to the project repository and check its current hosted links. Do not replace it with a random ROM site.
- The game loads but does not respond: Try a current desktop browser, disable aggressive script-blocking extensions for that page, close heavy tabs, and reload.
- Keyboard input fails: Click the game window and test keyboard controls before connecting a controller.
- The controller is missing: Connect it before opening or refreshing the game, check browser focus and permissions, and try another desktop browser.
- Mobile play is unreliable: Use a desktop browser instead of assuming that touch controls or Bluetooth gamepads are supported.
- A download promises a fix: Do not install executable “fixes” from unofficial mirrors.
Is it legal and official?
No one should describe sm64js as an official Nintendo release. Nintendo’s intellectual-property and piracy guidance says unauthorized copies of Nintendo games distributed online are illegal and warns against unauthorized ROM downloads and emulator-related piracy.
The sm64js repository displays a WTFPL license for its repository materials, but that label does not automatically grant permission to redistribute Nintendo’s original game assets, characters, music, or other protected content. The legal position can depend on the exact build, what it distributes, how it is hosted, and the jurisdiction involved. This is not a legal opinion.
The practical rule is simple: use the project’s documented pages, do not download copyrighted ROMs from unofficial sites, and do not assume that an accessible browser game has Nintendo’s permission.
Browser port versus Nintendo’s official option
| Option | Best for | Main advantage | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser port | Quick access, demonstrations, technical curiosity | No conventional installation | Unofficial availability and inconsistent controls |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Official access on Switch or Switch 2 | Nintendo-supported distribution and console controls | Requires Nintendo hardware and a paid membership |
| Original N64 or legitimate re-release | Authentic hardware experience | Original controller and hardware context | Requires compatible hardware and a legitimate copy |
| Native PC project or mod ecosystem | Modding and advanced configuration | More customization | More setup and asset-related complications |
Nintendo lists Super Mario 64 in its Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics collection for Switch and Switch 2. Nintendo says that collection requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Its U.S. membership page showed annual pricing of $49.99 for an individual plan and $79.99 for a family plan on August 18, 2026; prices and availability can vary by country and change over time.
Best Value
Nintendo also lists support for Joy-Con, Joy-Con 2, Switch Pro Controller, Switch 2 Pro Controller, and the Nintendo 64 Controller. The Switch 2 version includes features such as rewind and a CRT filter, according to Nintendo’s product information. The official route is not browser-based, but it is the clearer choice for dependable access, supported controls, and a console-oriented experience.
Which option should you choose?
Try the browser port if you want immediate access, a short nostalgia session, or a demonstration with minimal setup. It is especially appealing if you are curious about JavaScript/WebGL projects.
Choose Nintendo’s Switch option if official distribution, reliable controller support, more predictable saves, and access to a broader classic-game library matter more than playing on a computer or phone.

Look at a native PC project only if you are comfortable with deeper setup and want higher-resolution rendering, mods, custom settings, or specialized multiplayer projects. That is a different experience from simply opening a browser tab.
Verdict
Playing Super Mario 64 in a browser is genuinely impressive—but the impressive part is the unofficial JavaScript/WebGL technology and its low barrier to entry, not an official Nintendo web release. sm64js makes the idea real, while its work-in-progress status and changing hosted builds make it less dependable than a supported console option.
Try it through the project’s own pages while it is available, keep your expectations realistic, and avoid ROM-download sites. For a stable, official experience, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack remains the safer fallback.
