The 2024 Dungeons & Dragons core books update fifth edition rather than replacing it with a wholly new edition. You can start for free with the current D&D Beyond Basic Rules; a player who wants the complete revised character options primarily needs the revised Player’s Handbook (listed as 5.5e), while a Dungeon Master may add the revised Dungeon Master’s Guide and the revised Monster Manual as the campaign demands. A group already using the 2014 rules does not have to rebuy everything or convert immediately. Existing adventures remain usable, but revised and older character options need to be mixed carefully.

Is this a new edition of Dungeons & Dragons?
No. Wizards of the Coast presents the 2024 core books as an update to fifth edition, not a mandatory edition change. The revised Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide arrived in the 2024 publication wave, and the revised Monster Manual followed in February 2025. The publisher’s FAQ describes the books as revised core rulebooks while retaining compatibility with fifth-edition adventures and supplements: official FAQ.

D&D Beyond changed its display labels on March 2, 2026. Content using the 2014 rules is now labeled 5e, and the updated rules are labeled 5.5e. The changelog calls this “a clarity update only—no rules, purchases, or gameplay are changing”: D&D Beyond changelog. The label change did not create another rules release.
Which D&D books do you need to start?
Your role at the table determines the sensible purchase. Nobody needs all three revised core books just to sit down and play.

If you are exploring or spending as little as possible
Begin with the free D&D Beyond Basic Rules. They contain revised rules for players, classes and character origins, DM guidance, monsters and a downloadable character sheet. They are a playable starting point, but they do not promise every class option, subclass, feat, spell or creature in the paid books.
If you are a player
The revised Player’s Handbook is the main full-rule purchase. Its official listing identifies a 384-page book containing the revised player offering: official listing. You do not need the Dungeon Master’s Guide or Monster Manual to create and play a character. A DM can provide monsters and campaign rules, while the free rules can cover a first session.
Recommended Free Tools
If you are the Dungeon Master
Free rules can get a game running, but the books serve different jobs. Add the revised Player’s Handbook when the group needs its complete player options; choose the revised Dungeon Master’s Guide for campaign-building tools, Bastions, crafting, magic items, maps and Greyhawk material; and choose the revised Monster Manual for its larger redesigned creature reference. This is a progression based on how you run games, not a compulsory bundle.
If your group already owns the 2014 books
There is no general reason to rebuy the books. You can continue with the 2014 rules, migrate at an agreed point, or use revised material selectively. Decide which rules version governs character creation and play before combining options, because a revised replacement takes precedence over its 2014 counterpart.
What changed in character creation?
The revised Player’s Handbook changes where important character choices come from and reorganizes the player rules. The most visible shift is that ability-score adjustments move to backgrounds rather than species, and each listed background supplies an Origin feat.
Backgrounds now shape ability scores and early feats
In the revised system, selecting a background is not only a story decision. It also supplies the ability-score adjustments and an Origin feat associated with that background. Review the current background text when rebuilding a character instead of applying a 2014 background formula by habit.
Species are updated options, not a renamed copy
The revised book updates species choices and terminology. A species entry is not simply the old “race” entry under a new heading; use the current option’s traits and rules when comparing builds. The revised Player’s Handbook lists 10 species, 16 backgrounds and 75 feats, according to the publisher’s 2024 overview: D&D Beyond’s “What’s new” guide.
Classes and subclasses are reorganized
All 12 core classes are revised, with four subclasses for each in the book. That does not mean every 2014 subclass disappeared. It means you must check whether a particular subclass received a revised version before using it with a revised class.

How do combat and everyday actions differ?
The revised rules make several recurring choices more explicit. The publisher’s migration material gives concrete examples rather than claiming that every encounter plays completely differently.
Weapon Mastery gives martial characters more weapon-specific choices
Weapon Mastery lets eligible characters access a chosen weapon’s mastery property. The publisher identifies eight properties: Cleave, Graze, Nick, Push, Sap, Slow, Topple and Vex. The exact class feature and weapon requirements are in the revised Player’s Handbook; do not import a mastery property into a 2014 character without checking which rules set your table is using.

The official transition guide highlights grapple and shove choices on Unarmed Strikes. When a character attempts one, use the revised procedure and outcomes instead of relying on a 2014 summary or an old character sheet reference: 2024 Player’s Handbook updates.
Potion use is faster
Drinking or administering a potion is identified in the migration examples as a Bonus Action. That can change a turn’s tactical choices, especially when a character needs to heal without giving up an Action.
Heroic Inspiration is more flexible
Heroic Inspiration allows a character to reroll any die immediately after rolling it. Apply the timing in the current rule text; do not assume that an older table handout’s wording still describes the revised mechanic.
Healing, rests, surprise and conditions receive revisions
The publisher identifies improved or redesigned versions of spells such as Counterspell, Cure Wounds and Healing Word. It also revises exhaustion, grappling, surprise, rests and conditions. The revised book’s expanded Rules Glossary and updated terminology—including the Magic action and species—are important when a short table ruling conflicts with an older explanation. For a precise ruling, consult the current text and any applicable errata rather than treating an older comparison article as permanent law.

The spell list and the reference structure were edited together. Some familiar spells have new wording, and the Rules Glossary is intended to give the table a shared definition for terms that appear across classes, spells and monsters.
Read the revised spell entry, not only the spell name
A spell that keeps its name may still have changed timing, range, target, effect or saving-throw language. This matters for frequently prepared spells such as Counterspell, Cure Wounds and Healing Word. When a revised class refers to a spell, use the revised spell text supplied by the current rules set.

Use the glossary for table disputes
The expanded glossary collects definitions for actions, conditions and other rules terms. It is especially useful for distinguishing the Magic action from ordinary activity and for resolving how revised conditions, rests or surprise work in play.
What do the revised Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual add?
These books target DM workload rather than filling a basic player requirement.

Dungeon Master’s Guide
The revised Dungeon Master’s Guide reorganizes practical campaign resources and adds material for running a longer game. Its highlighted additions include:
- Guidance for creating and managing campaigns.
- Player-controlled Bastions, which give characters an ongoing home-base system.
- Revised magic-item crafting guidance.
- Maps and other table-ready DM resources.
- Greyhawk setting material.
A DM who already has reliable campaign procedures may be able to start without it, while a new DM may value the consolidated guidance immediately. The official listing describes the scope: Dungeon Master’s Guide listing.
Monster Manual
The revised Monster Manual arrived in February 2025, not in the 2024 publication wave. Its official listing describes more than 500 monsters, including more than 75 described as brand-new, with redesigned stat blocks: official core-book listing. Those counts are publisher figures. A player normally does not need this book; a DM who wants the expanded creature reference is its intended buyer.
Can you use 2014 adventures and supplements with the revised rules?
Yes, published fifth-edition adventures and supplements remain broadly compatible, but compatibility does not mean that every old character option can be combined unchanged with a revised class.
Revised options replace corresponding 2014 options
When the revised Player’s Handbook includes a replacement for a 2014 class, subclass, background, species or spell, use the revised version in a revised-PHB game. An older subclass that was updated cannot be used in its old form with the revised class.
Unupdated options may remain available
An older option that has no revised counterpart can be used under the rules that apply to it, subject to the DM’s approval and the table’s stated version. D&D Beyond’s guidance gives the old Knowledge Domain as an example that can be used with a revised Cleric, while the revised spell versions still apply: compatibility guidance.

Adventures are not automatically invalidated
Monsters, encounters, treasure and story material from 2014 adventures can continue to supply a campaign. The DM should check a creature’s or spell’s current wording when a revised rule changes how an encounter functions, rather than assuming that an entire adventure needs conversion.
How should an ongoing campaign move to the revised rules?
Migration is a group decision, not an automatic requirement. The official campaign-update guidance recommends agreeing on a transition point and reviewing characters together: campaign migration guide.
- Talk before changing the rules. Tell players whether the campaign will stay on 2014 rules, move fully to the revised books, or use a defined mixture.
- Choose a transition point. A new adventure, level, chapter or downtime break gives the group a clean place to update sheets.
- Review every character sheet. Check the class, subclass, species, background, feats, spells, weapon choices and any features that refer to older terminology.
- Replace revised material. If the revised book contains the option’s updated version, use that text. If it does not, decide whether the older option fits the table’s compatibility policy.
- Update shared references. Replace old spell cards, condition summaries, action cheat sheets and encounter notes that conflict with the revised glossary.
- Permit a natural handoff when useful. The official guidance allows a group to wait for a character’s natural transition if everyone agrees; conversion does not have to happen in the middle of a scene.
Should you buy physical, digital or combined books?
The official store lists physical, digital and combined physical/digital formats for the core books. Choose the format that matches how your group references rules: paper is useful at a shared table, digital text is searchable, and a combined purchase can support both uses when that format is offered. The available information does not establish an automatic digital entitlement, a discount, an external marketplace listing or any commission arrangement, so confirm the exact product description before paying.
The free downloadable character sheet remains available through the Basic Rules. A DM can therefore postpone accessories and additional print materials until the group knows whether the revised rules fit its campaign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the most sensible buying order?
Use this order if you want to spend only when a real need appears:
- Start with the Basic Rules. Make characters, learn the revised terminology and run a short session at no cost.
- Add the revised Player’s Handbook. Buy it when players need the complete class, subclass, feat, background, species and spell selection.
- Add the revised Dungeon Master’s Guide. Choose it for campaign frameworks, Bastions, crafting, magic items, maps and Greyhawk resources.
- Add the revised Monster Manual. Choose it when the DM wants the larger redesigned creature library rather than relying on the free selection or existing books.
This order keeps the player’s core need separate from DM expansion books and avoids treating the three-book set as an entry fee.

What should a table write down before mixing rules?
A one-page campaign policy prevents most version disputes. Record:
- Whether the campaign uses 2014 (5e), revised (5.5e), or a stated combination.
- Which version controls a class, subclass, species, background, feat and spell when both versions exist.
- Whether older options without revised replacements are allowed.
- Which rules glossary, condition definitions and potion procedures the group will use.
- Who makes final rulings when an adventure’s wording and the current core text differ.
Give every player the same policy before character creation. That is more reliable than trying to resolve version questions after an encounter has already started.

Frequently asked questions
What does “5.5e” mean on D&D Beyond?
It is D&D Beyond’s label for the updated 2024-era fifth-edition rules. The service uses “5e” for 2014 rules and “5.5e” for the revised rules; the March 2, 2026 change was a display-label clarification, not a new rules release.
Can a player use the free rules without owning a book?
Yes. The Basic Rules include playable character and rules content, DM guidance, monsters and a downloadable sheet. The limitation is scope: many options found in the revised Player’s Handbook are not part of the free selection.
Does every player need their own revised Player’s Handbook?
No. A group can share a physical copy, use digital access where available, or begin with the free rules. Individual copies become convenient when players frequently build characters, prepare many spells or need simultaneous table references.
Do I need the revised Monster Manual to run an old adventure?
Not necessarily. Existing adventures remain usable, and a DM can use the creatures supplied by the adventure or the free rules. The revised book is most useful when the DM wants its expanded collection and redesigned stat blocks in one reference.
Can I keep a 2014 character in a revised-rules campaign?
Usually the group can decide how and when to transition that character. Review each option against the revised book: an updated option should use its revised version, while an older option with no replacement may be allowed under the campaign’s compatibility policy.
