Dungeons & Dragons: The 10 Playable Races in the Original Humblewood Setting, Ranked by Usefulness

The original Humblewood setting has five birdfolk and five humblefolk races. Here’s how their concepts connect to the campaign—and what to check before choosing one.

The original Humblewood Campaign Setting offers ten playable animal-folk races: five birdfolk and five humblefolk. There is no official usefulness ranking, and the available publisher material does not establish that one race is stronger than another. This guide ranks them as practical starting points for players choosing a character concept, a story connection, and a race whose detailed rules fit their intended role—not as a combat tier list.

This covers the original setting’s ten races, not every option in the wider Humblewood series, which also includes Wesfolk. Humblewood is a third-party, 5e-compatible setting; check with your DM which book and character rules are in use before settling on a race.

What does “useful” mean in Humblewood?

The publisher describes the ten races through setting flavor, but does not publish comparative effectiveness data. The ordering below is therefore an editorial guide to how readily each race can inspire a character and connect to the campaign—not a claim about superior mechanics. A race’s actual rules features may change how well it suits a specific character, so read the entry in the version your table is using before making a build decision.

Humblewood’s central conflict also gives race choice narrative weight. Fires devastate humblefolk homes while birdfolk cities have avoided the worst effects, creating resentment and displacement. A character might have lost a home, come from a relatively protected city, or be caught between those experiences. These are possible story hooks, not assumptions about every member of either group.

The ten original Humblewood races, ranked as character starting points

Each entry pairs the publisher’s short description with a practical roleplaying angle. None of these descriptions proves a mechanical advantage, and no race is required for a class or party role.

1. Mapach

Raccoon-like Mapach are described as resourceful problem-solvers. That identity gives players an easy foundation for a character who improvises, fixes problems, or questions how things work—useful in a campaign shaped by disrupted homes and communities. Check the full rules entry before assuming that resourcefulness translates into a particular skill or combat benefit.

2. Jerbeen

Mouse- or gerbil-like Jerbeen are framed as brave, inspiring figures whose heroic deeds matter. They suit a player interested in a small-statured character with an outsized sense of purpose, or someone who wants to earn a place in a community through action. Their description is a story prompt, not evidence of a specific mechanical bonus.

3. Cervan

Deer-like Cervan are hearty and goal-oriented. Their determined, resilient concept can anchor a character devoted to protecting a community or pursuing a clear objective. Whether the race’s actual rules support a particular defensive or frontline role depends on the entry and edition your table uses.

4. Corvum

Crow-like Corvum are astute and serve as guardians of Humblewood’s knowledge. They are a natural fit for a character whose identity involves learning, keeping records, or safeguarding important information. Treat that association as setting flavor unless the relevant rules entry explicitly grants a feature that supports a specific build.

5. Hedge

Hedge are hedgehog-like and described as sensitive and empathetic. That makes them a strong concept for a character who pays attention to others’ needs or tries to mend strained relationships—an especially relevant angle in a setting marked by displacement and resentment. Empathy here is characterization, not a rules guarantee for social encounters.

Rank #3
Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

6. Gallus

Fowl-like Gallus are associated with dignity and faith in community. Choose one if you want a character whose sense of self is tied to collective responsibility, tradition, or civic life. In a campaign about unequal exposure to crisis, that background can lead to meaningful questions about what community owes its members.

7. Vulpin

Fox-like Vulpin are characterized as cunning and often ahead of their foes. Their description readily supports a clever, strategic personality, but it should not be mistaken for proof of superior stealth, social, or combat rules. Consult the full race entry before tying that concept to mechanics.

8. Raptor

Hawk- and eagle-like Raptors are agile trailblazers. They can suit a player who wants a bold, forward-moving character, particularly one inclined to explore new paths. The word “agile” in a setting description is not enough to establish a rules benefit; verify what the chosen version actually grants.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

9. Strig

Owl-like Strig are powerful and protective of what they believe is right. That makes them compelling for a character with strong convictions or a protective streak. A player can make that conviction a source of conflict as well as strength, especially amid the setting’s birdfolk–humblefolk tensions.

10. Luma

Pigeon- or dove-like Luma are described as aloof and as using their gifts to bring joy. They offer a distinctive contrast for players interested in a character who seems distant yet contributes to others’ happiness. The publisher’s brief description does not establish what those “gifts” are mechanically, so check the detailed rules rather than inferring an ability from the phrase.

How to choose for your character and table

  1. Start with the character you want to play. Pick the animal-folk identity and narrative role that interest you; the setting descriptions are prompts, not prescriptions.
  2. Connect the character to the campaign. Decide how the fires and resulting tensions have affected their home, relationships, or outlook. Avoid treating birdfolk or humblefolk as having one shared opinion.
  3. Read the complete race entry. Compare its actual features with the character’s planned role. Do not infer rules from a race’s animal inspiration or short marketing description.
  4. Confirm the rules version with your DM. Humblewood is a third-party, 5e-compatible setting, and the publisher’s current PDF listing notes a free character update for 5e+ (2024). Your table should establish which book and rules apply before character creation.

The Humblewood Campaign Setting PDF listing describes the book as containing over 200 pages, a level 1–5 adventure, ten playable races, and a free 5e+ (2024) character update. Product details can change; consult the listing for the current version and availability. The setting is also listed on D&D Beyond.

What races are in Humblewood?

The original campaign setting’s five birdfolk races are Corvum, Gallus, Luma, Raptor, and Strig. Its five humblefolk races are Cervan, Hedge, Jerbeen, Mapach, and Vulpin. The publisher’s broader Humblewood series also includes Wesfolk, so the original ten are not the full list of options across all later material.

What kind of D&D setting is Humblewood?

Humblewood is a third-party setting published by Hit Point Press, not a setting authored by Wizards of the Coast. The publisher describes it as “an unofficial D&D campaign setting created with the open gaming license.” Its campaign premise centers on a woodland fire crisis and the social tensions that follow. See the publisher’s Humblewood Campaign Setting page and the wider Humblewood series page for the publisher’s descriptions.
