What Dupery actually offers
A digital noir deduction roguelite
Dupery launched for PC and Mac on October 15, 2026. Its Steam listing describes a single-player investigation set against a criminal syndicate, with more than 175 roles and grid-based cases generated procedurally. The release concept adapts the tension of social deduction for one player: suspects make claims, information is incomplete or misleading, and you must decide whom to trust.
The setting matters because the game is not presenting a neutral logic worksheet. The noir framing gives each deduction a social consequence. You are a lone detective trying to expose syndicate members while preserving your standing, rather than an astronomer solving an abstract set of symbols.
The core loop
- Gather statements and clues. Interrogate suspects or review the information made available in the current case.
- Cross-reference the grid. Record relationships and contradictions on the detective board instead of treating any single statement as decisive.
- Form a theory. The objective is to identify likely syndicate members from imperfect testimony and role information.
- Make arrests. Arrests advance the investigation, but an incorrect choice carries a cost.
- Protect reputation. Wrongful arrests can damage your reputation, making risk management part of the puzzle rather than an afterthought.
- Continue the run. Procedural cases and roguelite progression supply the reason to return after a completed investigation.
Games Press described the premise this way in its October 15, 2026 launch release: “Playing as a lone wolf detective up against a shadowy criminal syndicate, you must solve grid-based procedural cases where every suspect has something to say – but hardly anyone is telling the whole truth.” That sentence captures Dupery’s defining tension: the challenge is not merely finding a pattern, but evaluating the reliability and consequences of information.

Why its replayability is different
Dupery’s procedural structure is its strongest advantage over authored case products. A new run can alter the arrangement of roles, clues and suspects, so the player is not only remembering a solved story. The advertised role count of more than 175 also broadens the possible combinations. This makes it a natural fit for players who value repeated sessions, experimentation and gradual improvement.
The trade-off is equally important. Procedural variety does not guarantee the same narrative texture as a written case file. If your favorite part of a mystery game is discovering a carefully staged sequence of interviews and locations, Dupery’s generated grids may feel more system-driven. Its appeal is the deduction loop and run progression, not a finite literary plot.
Black Sonata: the short hidden-movement alternative
What you are deducing
Black Sonata is a physical solitaire set in Shakespeare’s London. Its central problem is hidden movement: a target moves through an unseen route, and you infer where that target can be by combining observations with logical deductions. This is a different question from Dupery’s “which suspect is lying or belongs to the syndicate?” You are tracking one concealed subject through a spatial and temporal puzzle.

The print-and-play listing specifies a session of roughly 30 minutes, a board, 67 cards and 11 tokens. Those components support a compact game that can be set up and played without a computer. The physical board is part of the reasoning process: movement, sightings and deductions remain visible in front of you, and manipulating cards and tokens helps externalize the puzzle.

- You want a short session. About half an hour makes it suitable for a single focused puzzle rather than a long evening investigation.
- You enjoy spatial tracking. The hidden-movement mechanism gives every observation a positional consequence.
- You prefer a tabletop object. There is no PC requirement or companion application at the table.
- You like historical atmosphere without extensive reading. Shakespeare’s London supplies a strong theme while the main work remains logical deduction.
What you give up compared with Dupery
Black Sonata is narrower by design. Its compact component set and short sessions are strengths for accessibility, but they do not provide Dupery’s large role pool or roguelite run structure. The experience is closer to solving a carefully engineered tracking puzzle than repeatedly investigating a shifting cast of deceptive characters. Physical availability can also vary because the cited listing is a print-and-play product rather than a universally stocked digital release.
The Search for Planet X: formal constraints and explicit logic
A rules-first deduction system
The Search for Planet X supports one to four players and offers standard and expert modes. Sessions are listed at 60–75 minutes. Its theme casts players as astronomers participating in a scientific investigation, and its deduction system asks you to infer the location of Planet X from survey results and published theories.
Unlike Dupery, where suspect testimony may be intentionally deceptive, Planet X gives you a formal information environment. The challenge is interpreting what each survey result permits or rules out, recording the implications and identifying the only arrangement consistent with the rules. The game rewards disciplined note-taking and careful elimination.
The app and game-master options
The game can use a companion app or an official game-master kit. That choice affects setup and table feel. An app can handle hidden information and enforce the scenario’s logic; a printed or game-master approach may suit players who want a more tangible tabletop process. Either way, the important requirement is that the game’s information is structured and transparent enough for deductions to be checked against the published rules.
Renegade Game Studios describes the role directly: “Players take on the role of astronomers, participating in this real scientific investigation.” The science framing is therefore more than decoration. It points toward the kind of reasoning the game expects: classify evidence, update possibilities and reach a conclusion that follows from constraints.

Who should choose Planet X
- Logic-grid enthusiasts: You enjoy writing possibilities down and crossing them out systematically.
- Players who dislike bluff uncertainty: The information is presented as a formal puzzle rather than a contest over which character is lying.
- Science-theme fans: Astronomy gives the deductions a clear conceptual frame.
- Small groups as well as solo players: The one-to-four-player range lets the same system work alone or around a table.
The principal compromise is pacing. A 60–75-minute session requires more setup and sustained concentration than Black Sonata, and the app or official game-master kit is an additional consideration. It is a better match for players who want a full logic exercise than for someone seeking a quick puzzle between other activities.
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: the narrative investigation
How its deduction works
Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective uses an open-ended investigation format. You work through interviews, newspaper reports, a city directory and a map of London, deciding which leads deserve attention and which are distractions. The deduction is therefore editorial as much as logical: the challenge is selecting a productive route through a large body of narrative information.
The Asmodee USA product page lists ten cases, an average play time of 90 minutes and support for one to eight players. Its description is concise: “Players try to solve mysteries by interviewing suspects, searching through newspapers, and walking the streets of London for clues.” Solo play is fully compatible with that format, although the experience remains reading-heavy.

Choose Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective when what you want next is not another grid but a substantial mystery to inhabit. The cases are authored, so clues can form a deliberate chain and the city can feel like a connected investigative space. The larger time commitment also allows atmosphere and character detail that a short logic game cannot provide.
The finite case count is the corresponding limitation. Once you know a case’s solution and major leads, replay value is lower than Dupery’s procedural runs. The reading load can also be demanding: if you want quick, mechanically repeatable puzzles, the newspapers and interviews may feel like work rather than immersion.

Black Sonata and Planet X sit between those poles: their replay value comes from their deduction systems and modes, while their appeal is concentrated in the puzzle mechanism rather than an endlessly changing story.

Dupery communicates through case information and suspect statements. Black Sonata keeps the focus on board-state deduction. Planet X asks you to interpret concise survey and theory information. If you are coming from digital roguelites
Start with Dupery. Its procedural cases, role variety and run progression are designed for repeated digital sessions, while the arrest and reputation systems add consequences to what might otherwise be a static logic puzzle.
If you want the fastest tabletop puzzle
Choose Black Sonata. Its approximately 30-minute format and small component set make it the easiest of these alternatives to fit into a short window, provided hidden movement is the mechanism you find appealing.

If you want a mystery you can read into
Choose Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. Its ten cases, London map, interviews and newspapers create the richest narrative investigation here, with the understanding that a case can take about 90 minutes and will not offer Dupery’s procedural replayability.
What to expect when switching from one to another
From Dupery to Black Sonata
Expect less concern about character credibility and more attention to movement and location. You will not be managing a reputation track or arresting syndicate members; the satisfaction comes from turning partial sightings into a precise hidden-position deduction.
