dwintl20.dll is a genuine, older Microsoft DLL associated with Microsoft Application Error Reporting and legacy Office components. If Windows says dwintl20.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or could not be loaded, repair the Office or Microsoft installer that requested it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

Publicly documented copies are 32-bit. The filename alone does not identify the exact Office release installed on your computer, and a copy from one Office language, edition, or version is not automatically suitable for another.
First, identify what is requesting dwintl20.dll
The repair path depends on when the error appears.
- When opening Word, Excel, or another Office program: repair the installed Office suite.
- During Office setup or an update: check the DVD, ISO, network share, or extracted installation folder.
- When installing an older Microsoft product: repair or reinstall that specific product from its original source.
- When launching an unrelated application: inspect the full error and file path before assuming Office is responsible.
If the message names a program, right-click that program’s shortcut, select Properties, and check Target. You can also open Task Manager, right-click the affected process, and choose Open file location when the process remains running.

Check the location of any existing dwintl20.dll file. An Office-related directory is more consistent with the file’s known use. A copy in a random temporary folder or another user-writable location deserves a malware scan before you restore or use it.
Fix 1: Repair Microsoft Office
Time needed: About 10 to 30 minutes, depending on whether Online Repair is required.
This is the most likely fix when the error appears while launching Office or after an Office update.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Close all Office programs.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the affected Office edition.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.
- Choose Quick Repair, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the affected Office program.
If Quick Repair does not help, repeat the process and choose Online Repair. This uses a more complete repair process and may require an internet connection.
Some older MSI-based Office installations show a maintenance window instead. Select Repair, continue through the wizard, restart Windows, and test again. The Microsoft Office repair workflow distinguishes the available repair methods.
If Office repair fails, note the exact Office name shown in Installed apps. Multiple Office versions can coexist, and repairing the wrong entry will not restore the component used by the failing installer.
Fix 2: Restore the matching Office installation source
Time needed: 10 to 45 minutes, plus time to obtain or remount the original media.
If Setup reports something like:
Setup cannot find Office.en-us1033dwintl20.dll
the problem is usually the installation source rather than a Windows system file.
- Insert the original Office DVD, or mount the matching ISO.
- In File Explorer, open the mounted drive.
- Confirm that the expected Office folders and files are present.
- When Setup asks for a source, select Browse.
- Open the correct source drive or installation folder.
- Locate the language and architecture path requested by Setup.
- Select the source and continue.
If the source is on a network share, confirm that the share is still connected and that your account can read its files. If the ISO was downloaded or copied previously, obtain a fresh copy from the organization or account that supplied the Office license and remount it.
Do not substitute a file from a different language folder, Office edition, or version. A catalog may list both older 32-bit versions such as 11.0.5510.0 and another 32-bit version such as 14.0.4750.1000, but that does not mean either copy is correct for your installation.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
A missing file may have been deleted or quarantined by security software. Check this before copying anything.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open detections related to the Office installation or
dwintl20.dll. - Review the original file path and detection name.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
- It came from a trusted, intact Microsoft Office installation.
- The original path is an Office or Microsoft shared-program directory.
- A full scan does not indicate broader compromise.
- You are certain the detection is a false positive.
If you restore a quarantined item, Windows Security may detect it again. When the source or path is uncertain, leave the file quarantined and repair or reinstall the parent Office product instead. Microsoft explains these choices in its Protection History guidance.
Fix 4: Scan for malware before restoring files
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours.
A familiar Microsoft filename is not proof that every copy is safe. Run a scan if the file is in an unusual directory, antivirus reported a threat, or other unexplained programs are failing.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If you suspect active compromise or the full scan cannot remove the detection, use Microsoft Defender Offline from the same Scan options page. Save your work first because Windows will restart. Follow Microsoft’s Defender Offline scanning instructions.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After a clean scan, repair Office from its original source. Do not download a DLL simply because its filename matches the error.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, followed by a restart.
Use this step when other Windows files are also failing, Windows repairs report corruption, or the error appeared after a broader system problem. These commands normally do not recreate a DLL that belongs to an old Office installation.

Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRepeatedly running SFC or DISM will not correct a missing Office installation source. If both commands complete without resolving the error, return to Office repair or reinstall the affected product.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds; repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Office product remains the definitive fix when that product owns the file.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features only for a related legacy component
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
dwintl20.dll is not established as a normal Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component, so enabling random Windows features is not a direct repair. Check Windows Features only if the failing installer explicitly requires an older Windows component.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the feature named in the error or installation documentation.
- Select it only if it is clearly required.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable features speculatively. There is no verified indication that Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a display driver normally supplies dwintl20.dll.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the error is part of a wider hardware problem
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A graphics, chipset, or storage driver is not a normal source for this Office-related DLL. Driver work is relevant only if the same failure began with crashes, device errors, or a recent hardware change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver and select Search automatically for drivers, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If a recent driver update caused the wider problem, use Roll Back Driver when that button is available. Do not replace dwintl20.dll with a driver package.
Finding which of many installed drivers is stale can be tedious, especially after a fresh Windows setup. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the Office repair required when Office owns dwintl20.dll.
Do not copy the DLL into System32
Do not download dwintl20.dll from a random DLL website and place it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong Office version or language, and mix a 32-bit file with an application that expects something else. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may need its DLL in the application’s own directory or an Office shared folder. Windows directory copying is not a general solution.
There is no verified current standalone Microsoft redistributable download for this DLL. Use Office repair, the original matching installation media, or the official installer for the Microsoft product that requested it.
Why the error happens
The common causes are:
| Cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Damaged Office installation | Run Quick Repair, then Online Repair |
| Incomplete or wrong Office media | Use matching original media and language source |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection history, scan, then repair |
| Interrupted update or uninstall | Repair or reinstall that Microsoft product |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Altered or malicious file | Run a full scan and Defender Offline if needed |
| Unknown parent product | Trace the executable and full file path first |
A zero-byte dwintl20.dll is corrupt. Replace it through Office repair or reinstallation rather than renaming or registering it.
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that dwintl20.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. In that case, repairing the parent Office installation is still safer than replacing the named file alone.
Final escalation path
If repair and matching-source checks fail:
- Record the exact error text.
- Record the executable that triggers it.
- Record the full path of any existing
dwintl20.dll. - Note whether the installation is Click-to-Run or MSI-based.
- Uninstall the affected legacy Office product using Microsoft’s supported removal method.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from verified matching media.
Use System Restore only if the problem began after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists. It can revert applications and system settings, so it should not be the first response to an isolated Office DLL error.
FAQ
Is dwintl20.dll legitimate?
Yes. Its public file metadata identifies it with Microsoft Application Error Reporting. That does not prove that every copy is safe; location, scan results, and installation source still matter.
Is dwintl20.dll part of Windows?
It is not established as a standard Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component. It is usually associated with an older Office or Office-related installation.
Is dwintl20.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Publicly documented copies are 32-bit. Match the architecture and version required by the requesting application, and do not put a 32-bit copy into a Windows directory as a generic fix.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I run regsvr32?
No. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that this application resource DLL should be registered, and the command may return an entry-point error without repairing anything. Microsoft documents regsvr32 behavior.
What if the file is only missing during Setup?
Prioritize the original DVD, mounted ISO, network share, or extracted installation folder. Confirm the language path, such as Office.en-us1033, and use media matching the installed Office edition and architecture.
