The free Retouched Update for the original Dying Light launched on June 26, 2025. It improves visuals and audio for owners on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, though Techland says the exact changes vary by platform. It is an enhancement update, not a full remaster.
When did the Dying Light Retouched Update come out?
Techland announced June 26, 2025, as the release date, then confirmed on launch day that the update was live. The announcement and launch notice are available on the official Dying Light Steam news feed and its launch post.
Is the Retouched Update free, and which platforms have it?
Techland said the update is free for owners of the original Dying Light on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. You do not need to buy a separate Retouched edition or expansion to receive the update. If you do not own the base game, buying the game is separate from getting its free update.
What does the update change?
Techland describes a mix of visual and audio enhancements. The detailed changes it lists include:

- Higher-resolution textures, with manual asset work to improve how environments appear.
- Upscaled skyboxes and clouds, plus lighting and physically based rendering improvements.
- “Ultra”-level shadows, including a new 8K Ultra shadow-quality option.
- A higher maximum level-of-detail range in the view-distance menu: from 260% to 340%. Techland says players with modern systems can raise the distance at which detailed assets load, balancing the increased GPU and CPU load themselves.
- A remastered soundtrack by original composer Paweł Błaszczak, alongside new music tracks and ambient themes.
The 260% and 340% figures and 8K shadow description are specifications stated by Techland, not independent performance benchmarks. Raising view distance can increase GPU and CPU load; the announcement does not provide measured frame-rate results.
Do all platforms get the same changes?
No identical feature set is guaranteed. Techland cautioned that the exact changes vary by platform, and its announcements do not provide a complete platform-by-platform feature comparison. Check the update notes for your system rather than assuming that every listed option or result is available on every console and PC configuration.

Is Dying Light Retouched a remaster?
No. Techland describes the release as enhancements to the existing game, not a complete overhaul or remaster. Franchise director Tymon Smektała put it plainly: “the Retouched Update is about squeezing out even more from the Dying Light you already love. It’s not a complete overhaul or remaster.”
