Yes. BioWare is officially closing, and early development on the next Mass Effect project has ended. BioWare announced the decision on October 21, 2026, while Reuters reported that the move formed part of an Electronic Arts restructuring involving about 400 layoffs, including roughly 50 BioWare employees. That ends BioWare’s direct role as the studio behind the series, but it does not erase the existing games or prove that every future use of the Mass Effect universe is impossible.
What exactly did BioWare and EA announce?
BioWare’s official statement on October 21, 2026 said: “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.” Reuters separately reported that EA would close BioWare’s Edmonton studio and cancel an early-stage Mass Effect project.

The wording matters. It confirms both the studio closure and the end of early development on that particular project. It does not announce that the Mass Effect intellectual property has been retired forever, nor does it say that existing games will be removed from sale.
How did the announcement change what EA had said before?
EA and BioWare had given a very different update on November 7, 2025, during N7 Day. Executive producer Mike Gamble said, “the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe.” The October 21, 2026 statement is the later, controlling status: that early project is no longer moving forward under BioWare.

How large was the restructuring?

Closing the studio is therefore a change in who can directly make new BioWare games, not a deletion of the catalogue it produced. The announcement gives no separate cancellation notice for other franchises.
Is Mass Effect dead?
The evidence supports a narrower answer: BioWare’s next project is dead, but the wider Mass Effect universe is not established as permanently dead. The completed games remain distinct products, and rights holders could theoretically authorize another developer or a licensed production in the future. No replacement game, new developer, release window, or greenlit follow-up has been announced in the statements covered here.
What can you play now?
Mass Effect Legendary Edition remains the official way to revisit the original trilogy in one remastered collection, subject to current platform and regional availability. What future project was separately documented?
BioWare’s November 2025 N7 update also said it was partnering with Amazon on a Mass Effect television series. The update described an active writers’ room and a new story set after the original trilogy, but it gave no release date or current streaming availability. That television project is separate from the cancelled early-stage game, and its eventual status is not established by the October 2026 closure statement.
Why did EA cancel the next Mass Effect?

Can another studio make a Mass Effect game later?
