Electronic Arts is restructuring and expects to eliminate about 400 jobs, or roughly 3% of its workforce. The October 21, 2026 announcement also closes BioWare and its Edmonton workspace, ending the studio’s early work on the next Mass Effect. EA says it is concentrating staff, technology and spending on fewer large opportunities rather than maintaining as many simultaneous projects. The company says selected shooter, action-adventure, sports and lifestyle franchises remain priorities, but it has not published a complete list of affected roles, severance terms or implementation dates.
What exactly did EA announce on October 21, 2026?
EA president and chief studios officer Cam Weber and president and chief operating officer David Tinson told employees that a months-long operations review would reshape the company’s teams and portfolio. Bloomberg, citing a person familiar with EA’s plans, put the reduction at about 400 positions and reported that roughly 50 BioWare jobs were included; Variety separately corroborated the overall account. EA’s own memo confirms the studio closure and project changes but does not publish a role-by-role tally.

- Workforce: Approximately 3% of EA’s employees are expected to be affected.
- BioWare: The studio and its Edmonton workspace are closing.
- Mass Effect: The small team working on the next game in early development is being disbanded.
- Portfolio: EA is directing resources toward fewer large projects and selected established franchises.
The announcement is a corporate plan, not a complete implementation schedule. Individual notifications, local employment rules and any internal transfers may determine how the reduction unfolds for particular employees.
Why is EA cutting jobs?
EA says the reason is strategic concentration: after reviewing its operations, it wants to put more people, technology and investment behind three priorities it calls “Deepen Our Core,” “Expand Our Reach” and “Transform Our Business.” In the employee message, Weber and Tinson said the decisions reflect their belief in EA’s future while acknowledging that colleagues would be affected.

The memo’s explanation is about where EA will place resources, not a published financial breakdown of each eliminated position. It does not assign a specific savings target to the October restructuring or say that every affected job is tied to a particular game.
Is BioWare shutting down, and what happens to the next Mass Effect?
Yes. EA says it is closing BioWare and the Edmonton workspace, and that decision ends the next Mass Effect project’s early development. The memo describes the team as small and does not provide a release date, production budget or indication that the project had reached full production.

Which EA games and teams are continuing?
EA’s memo separates projects it says will receive continued investment from those that are closed, paused or resized. The following status uses EA’s wording; the reported identification of the unnamed Respawn–DICE project is kept separate because EA has not confirmed its title.
| Area | Status | Resource direction | Employee impact in the public announcement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battlefield | Continuing | Future titles remain planned after EA’s stated success for Battlefield 6. | No additional role list published. |
| Apex | Continuing | EA says it will invest heavily, including new multiplayer modes. | No additional role list published. |
| Respawn and DICE collaboration | Continuing, project unnamed by EA | A future joint project is planned. | No additional role list published. |
| Marvel’s Iron Man | Continuing | Remains in EA’s action-adventure launch pipeline. | No additional role list published. |
| Next Star Wars Jedi game | Continuing | Remains in the launch pipeline as EA narrows the number of simultaneous large projects. | No additional role list published. |
| Project Gridiron | In development | EA describes it as a social-first, open-world American-football experience. | No additional role list published. |
| Fight Night | Pre-production | Development continues at the pre-production stage. | No additional role list published. |
| Project Evergreen for The Sims | Continuing with more time | EA says the project is being given additional development time. | No additional role list published. |
| Project Lotus for The Sims | Paused | Work is on hold while EA concentrates its portfolio. | No additional role list published. |
| skate. | Resized | Moving to a smaller, more focused team. | Some roles may be affected; EA has not listed them. |
Variety reported that multiple sources identified the unnamed Respawn–DICE project as Star Wars: Battlefront 3. That is a reported identification, not an EA-confirmed title, so EA’s official status remains “unnamed future project.”
Did the $55 billion buyout cause the layoffs?
The timing links the events, but EA has not said in its October employee memo that the buyout caused the restructuring. The Los Angeles Times reported that EA completed a $55 billion leveraged buyout in August 2026 led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. The same report said the transaction put about $18 billion of debt on EA’s books and that EA had earlier told investors it sought up to $700 million in savings, partly through lower research-and-development costs.

Those debt and savings figures provide financial context for why investors may scrutinize headcount decisions. They are not stated by EA as the reason for closing BioWare, pausing Project Lotus or resizing skate.; EA’s stated rationale is its portfolio and operating-priority review.
What did EA’s top leaders tell employees?
The message from Weber and Tinson framed the cuts alongside confidence in the company’s market position. They wrote: “Today, we’re the number one publisher in Western HD gaming. That’s an extraordinary position to lead from, and one we should be proud of.”
On employee support, they said: “In those cases, we will support impacted employees in exploring other opportunities within EA, and we’re committed to treating impacted colleagues with care and respect.” They closed by saying: “The decisions we’re making in our priorities, how we work, and with our portfolio reflect our belief in EA’s future.”

What remains unknown about the layoffs?
EA has not released exact severance formulas, a complete list of affected occupations, office-by-office totals or dates for every action. The public announcement also does not say how many employees will transfer internally, which locations beyond Edmonton will change, or whether the reported 400-position estimate will shift as local consultations conclude.

For employees, the practical next information will come through direct notices and applicable labor-law processes. For players, a project appearing in the “continuing” group means EA has publicly prioritized it, not that a launch date or final scope has been announced.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does closing the Edmonton workspace mean every BioWare employee is being dismissed?
No complete individual list has been published. EA says it will help impacted colleagues explore other internal opportunities, so the studio closure and each person’s employment outcome are not necessarily identical.

What does “early development” mean for the next Mass Effect?
EA gives no production milestone beyond describing a small early-development team. The memo supplies no release window, platform list or replacement plan for the project.
When will the continuing EA games receive new release dates or updates?
The restructuring memo provides no new launch calendar. Battlefield, Apex, the next Star Wars Jedi game and the other continuing projects remain priorities, but their specific schedules were not stated.
