The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom makes a meaningful change to the series: Princess Zelda is the protagonist, and copying objects and monsters with the Tri Rod—not relying on a sword and shield—is the adventure’s central idea. It expands what a top-down Zelda game can ask players to do, while keeping familiar dungeons and boss fights. That is a clear shift, but one game cannot prove the franchise has changed forever.
What makes Echoes of Wisdom different?
In Echoes of Wisdom, rifts appear across Hyrule and swallow people and objects, including the king and Link. Zelda sets out with Tri, an ethereal companion, and uses the Tri Rod to make “echoes”: copies of objects and monsters she encounters. Nintendo describes the game as a new top-down adventure starring Zelda, rather than Link. Nintendo’s developer interview explains how the team built the game around that premise.

Echoes are tools for traversal, puzzles, and combat. Zelda might copy a table to reach a ledge, use water blocks to climb, arrange beds as a bridge, or summon a monster to fight beside her. Because the player chooses which available echoes to use and how to combine them, a puzzle can invite several solutions instead of pointing to one intended item. The official game information also describes a temporary swordfighter mode, along with dungeons, accessories, and Smoothie Shops.
Why Zelda became the protagonist
Producer Eiji Aonuma says the team initially considered making Link the protagonist. But as the developers focused on copying objects into the world, they worried that Link’s sword and shield would give players an easy alternative to relying on monster echoes. The designers wanted the echo system to remain central, so Zelda—who does not typically fight with sword and shield—fit the concept better. Aonuma explained: “If that’s the case, it must be someone who doesn’t fight with a sword and shield, right? Who in the series would be a good fit for these powers and bring their insight to them? Well, that would have to be Princess Zelda.” The interview with Aonuma and the development team presents the choice as a design decision, not simply a change of character for its own sake.
#1 Best Overall
Aonuma also says fans had asked whether Zelda would ever be the protagonist, and that he wanted a game in which the choice made sense and did justice to her as a character. The game answers that request by giving Zelda abilities and a role that shape its play, rather than merely putting her in Link’s place.
What changed—and what stayed familiar
The useful comparison is not simply “old Zelda versus new Zelda.” Echoes of Wisdom changes how players approach combat and puzzles, but Nintendo’s developers describe it as a distinct top-down branch of the series, not a replacement for its large 3D adventures.

| Design question | Echoes of Wisdom | What Nintendo says remains |
|---|---|---|
| Who leads the adventure? | Princess Zelda is the protagonist, using the Tri Rod to create echoes. | The shift is specific to this game; it does not establish that future entries will all star Zelda. |
| How do players solve problems? | Players select and combine copied objects and monsters for puzzles, traversal, and combat. | Director Tomomi Sano says familiar dungeons and boss fights preserve an “authentic” Zelda feeling. |
| What kind of world is it? | A top-down Hyrule built for experimentation with echoes. | Aonuma describes the game as a compact-feeling top-down adventure distinct from the vast 3D worlds of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. |
The developers say the map grew to “eight times the size of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.” That is Nintendo’s comparison of map size, not an independent measurement of playable area or a claim about playtime. Aonuma says the goal was still an approachable, compact-feeling top-down world. Nintendo’s interview with director Tomomi Sano and producer Eiji Aonuma discusses the balance between the expanded map and familiar Zelda structure.
How well does the new approach work?
In its North American review published September 25, 2024, Nintendo Life rated the game 9/10. Reviewer Alana Hagues praised the creative possibilities of echoes, as well as the dungeons, overworld, and music. The review also noted an inconsistent frame rate, fiddly lock-on controls, and automatons that felt like an afterthought. Its 15–20-hour estimate is that outlet’s estimate for an adventure, not a guaranteed completion time; playtime can vary with how a player explores and solves challenges.
That review offers one critic’s perspective, not a consensus score. Its praise and complaints point to the central trade-off: the echo system encourages improvisation, but the experience can be less smooth when performance or controls get in the way. Nintendo’s interviews establish what the developers intended; the review describes one critic’s experience of the result.

Echoes of Wisdom is strong evidence that a Zelda game can put Zelda herself at the center and build its puzzles and combat around a flexible copying system. Nintendo’s developers also explicitly describe wanting a 2D top-down series separate from the 3D entries such as Breath of the Wild. That makes the game more than a cosmetic variation on the usual formula.

- Save the kingdom of Hyrule, this time with the wisdom of Princess Zelda! The people of Hyrule are being swallowed by strange crevices that have arisen, with a certain swordsman among the missing. Now it's up to Princess Zelda to save her kingdom in a new story from The Legend of Zelda !
- Team up with Tri and use the power of Tri's scepter to create "echoes", which are copies of objects found in the environment. Then recreate these echoes whenever you want to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.
- Create echoes like blocks of water to reach new heights, bridge old beds, throw rocks at enemies, or find your own creative combination of echoes to do everything your own way. You can even create monster echoes to fight alongside you in combat!
But “changed forever” goes beyond what the game and developer comments establish. The evidence shows one substantial experiment within a series that still uses recognizable dungeons, bosses, and a top-down world. Whether future games adopt Zelda as protagonist or build on echoes remains unknown. The more defensible conclusion is that Echoes of Wisdom broadens the possibilities for Zelda—not that every future Zelda has already been remade.
