Yes. The 2026 Steam restorations of Ecstatica and Ecstatica II can be played on a Steam Deck with a controller. Install the Steam versions, which run their Windows builds through Proton, rather than treating the original DOS releases as the Deck edition. SNEG advertises full controller support, Steam Deck compatibility, Steam Cloud Saves and achievements. However, neither game had a Valve Verified or Playable badge in the available launch-week records: Ecstatica was listed as Unknown, while a pre-release Valve test for Ecstatica II was marked Unsupported. A launch-week Deck report also found the built-in controls unresponsive until they were mapped to keyboard input. An Xbox-compatible pad is therefore the safest plug-and-play choice; Steam Input is the fallback when the handheld controls do not respond.

What is the correct Steam Deck version of Ecstatica?

Use the official Steam restorations released on 26 October 2026. They are separate Windows releases of the 1994 original and 1997 sequel, published digitally by SNEG and Andrew Spencer Studios. Steam lists app ID 4834840 for Ecstatica and 4834850 for Ecstatica II. GamingOnLinux and Techtroduce classify both as Proton/Wine titles: the Deck runs the Windows executable under Proton, not a native Linux port.

The GOG releases are DRM-free Windows downloads, but the documented Deck installation path in the available launch material is Steam. The Steam versions include the modern restoration executable, controller support, cloud-save and achievement features, and Steam’s Proton integration. The free DOS version supplied as an extra with Ecstatica runs through DOSBox; it is not the controller-ready restoration you should select for handheld play.

Both Steam pages offered a free demo during the October 2026 launch period. Ecstatica II Demo uses app ID 5307890 and advertises the same controller and Steam Input features, making it the lowest-risk way to check your Deck’s input before buying.

How strong is Steam Deck compatibility right now?

There are three different signals, and they do not agree. The publisher’s compatibility claim, Valve’s automated badge, and community reports describe different parts of the experience.

Evidence layer Ecstatica Ecstatica II What it means
Publisher feature list Steam Deck compatibility; full controller support Steam Deck compatibility; full controller support SNEG says the restorations are intended to run on Deck.
Valve/Steam status Steam store status listed as Unknown SteamDB recorded a Valve test as Unsupported Neither title had a Verified or Playable badge in the records available for launch week.
Community report Deck owner reported working presentation and 16:10 support Same report covered the sequel’s launch controls The games ran, but built-in Deck controls initially needed keyboard mapping.

The specific Ecstatica II SteamDB entry recorded Valve’s test at 19:27:54 UTC on 20 October 2026, using build 26057146 and the stable Proton runtime. Its category was Unsupported, even though the record also stored full controller support, a Steam controller template and touchscreen support. Because that test predates the 26 October public launch, it may represent a pre-release build. Steam’s Ecstatica store block remained Unknown, and no more detailed Valve test result was available for app 4834840.

Valve’s badge checks whether the default controller layout works without manual remapping, whether button glyphs match the Deck, whether text is readable on the seven-inch display, and whether default settings perform acceptably. It does not publish a promised frame rate or battery result. A broken default Deck layout can therefore produce an Unsupported result even when the game launches and is playable after a remap.

Which controller should you use?

Steam identifies Xbox controllers as supported without a USB-only warning. It marks DualShock and DualSense support as USB Only for these games. The Deck’s own controls can work after a Steam Input remap, but an Xbox-compatible pad is the most predictable choice for immediate play.

Input option Expected behavior Best use
Built-in Steam Deck controls Launch-week report found them unresponsive until mapped to keyboard input through Steam Input. Handheld play after creating a layout.
Xbox-compatible controller Listed by Steam as supported; Bluetooth or USB-C connection works with the Deck. Most reliable dedicated gamepad, especially when docked.
DualShock or DualSense Steam’s game flags specify USB Only. Wireless Bluetooth support on Deck in general does not override this game-specific flag. Use a USB cable, or let Steam Input emulate a compatible layout.
Keyboard through Steam Input Ecstatica II lists Steam Input API support and a keyboard-only option; the same mapping approach fixes a non-responsive built-in layout. Fallback when gamepad buttons are ignored.

For a docked television setup, pair the external controller after connecting the Deck. Open Steam button → Settings → Bluetooth, then hold the Xbox controller’s pairing button, located between its bumpers, until it appears. A separate dock is optional; Valve’s official Steam Deck Dock was listed at $79 in the cited 2026 hardware guide, while third-party docks are also available. The Deck can manage multiple Bluetooth devices, but practical simultaneous-controller limits are lower than SteamOS’s theoretical maximum of 16: about four on an LCD model and roughly five or six on an OLED model.

How do you configure Ecstatica on a Steam Deck?

Have the Steam version or demo installed, a current SteamOS installation, and either an Xbox-compatible controller or a willingness to create a Steam Input keyboard layout. Then use this sequence:

  1. Install the Steam build. On the Deck, open your Library, select Ecstatica or Ecstatica II, and install it. Proton is the expected compatibility layer because Steam lists Windows 10/11 builds.
  2. Check the default layout. Start the game and test movement, confirm, cancel and any attack or interaction buttons. If the handheld buttons do nothing, quit back to the game page.
  3. Map the Deck controls. Select the controller icon on the game page, open Steam Input, and assign Deck buttons to the restoration’s keyboard controls. Save the layout and relaunch. The launch-week Deck report described this as an easy workaround.
  4. Connect a dedicated pad if preferred. Pair an Xbox-compatible controller over Bluetooth or connect it by USB-C. For DualSense or DualShock, use USB for these titles unless Steam Input is translating the signals.
  5. Choose the renderer. In each game’s graphics options, select DOS, Windows 95 or modern Software rendering. Software is the high-resolution modern path; the renderer can handle widescreen output, including resolutions beyond 4K on compatible PCs.
  6. Set the soundtrack. The restorations provide General MIDI, Windows 95 and DOS soundtrack options. Choose the version that suits your headphones or docked speakers.
  7. Leave Steam Cloud enabled if you move between devices. Cloud Saves are advertised as a Steam feature. A published independent confirmation of a Deck-to-PC round trip was not available, so allow uploads to finish before closing Steam on either device.

Are the Deck’s screen and performance suitable?

Yes, the hardware is comfortably above the stated minimum. Both restorations are CPU-rendered and require no dedicated GPU. Steam lists a 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, DirectX-compatible sound and Windows 10/11 64-bit as the baseline.

Requirement Ecstatica Ecstatica II
Rendering CPU software rendering; no GPU required CPU software rendering; no GPU required
Minimum CPU 1.8 GHz 1.8 GHz
Minimum memory 2 GB RAM 2 GB RAM
Storage 2 GB 4 GB
Operating system listed by Steam Windows 10/11 64-bit Windows 10/11 64-bit

A Deck owner reported that the restoration displayed correctly at 16:10 and looked good on the handheld. SNEG says the software renderer supports modern widescreen modes, including 4K and beyond. Optional presentation settings include “Shaking Legs” in both games and “DOS Ceilings” in Ecstatica. No published Deck frame-rate, wattage, thermals or battery-life figure was available, so those numbers should not be inferred from the low PC requirements.

How do Ecstatica and Ecstatica II differ on a handheld?

Ecstatica is the slower, more exploratory game. Its demon-cursed village of Tirich uses fixed cameras, ellipsoid characters, puzzles and evasion around an almost unkillable werewolf. There is no quest log or minimap, and you can choose a male or female protagonist. Its more deliberate pace is forgiving when you are learning a new control layout.

Ecstatica II returns with a prince exploring a ruined kingdom and adds melee, spells, potions and randomized encounters. It contains more than 1,100 hand-chosen cinematic camera angles and leans further toward combat-heavy action adventure. That makes a dependable attack, dodge and interaction mapping more important on Deck than in the first game.

What should you do when controls or launch behavior fail?

  • Buttons do nothing: open the game’s controller settings from the Steam library page and create a Steam Input layout that sends the game’s keyboard commands. Restart after saving.
  • A DualSense or DualShock is not detected wirelessly: connect it by USB, because Steam’s game-specific flags state USB-only support, or use Steam Input to translate it.
  • The screen appears stretched: select the modern Software renderer and choose a widescreen resolution. The Deck report specifically confirmed 16:10 support.
  • You installed the DOS extra: return to the main restoration executable. The DOSBox bonus preserves the original release but is not the intended modern controller path.
  • The Steam badge says Unsupported: treat that as a warning about Valve’s default-layout and presentation checks, not proof that the game cannot launch. The recorded Ecstatica II test was made before release, and community play confirmed a working game after input remapping.
  • You are expecting a native Linux build: do not. These are Windows applications running through Proton, with Windows 10/11 listed as the store requirement.

Are there content warnings?

Steam describes Ecstatica as containing animated violence, blood, gore and mature sexual themes, and says it may not be appropriate for all audiences. Ecstatica II is described as containing animated violence, blood and gore. The first game also carries historical regional ratings for violence and horror, including an 18 rating in the cited records.

What is the bottom line for Deck owners?

Buy or demo the Steam restorations, not the 1990s DOS releases, if your goal is controller play on Steam Deck. Expect Proton rather than native Linux, and do not mistake the publisher’s compatibility statement for a Valve Verified badge. An Xbox-compatible controller should be the least troublesome setup; if the built-in controls fail, Steam Input keyboard mapping is the practical fix. The games’ light CPU and memory requirements suit Deck hardware, but no trustworthy public frame-rate or battery benchmark exists for either restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move an Ecstatica save between Steam Deck and a Windows PC?

Steam lists Cloud Saves for the restorations, so the feature is designed for cross-device synchronization. Let Steam finish uploading or downloading before switching devices; an independently documented Deck-to-PC round-trip result was not available at launch.

Does Ecstatica II support the Steam Deck touchscreen?

The SteamDB record for the pre-release build stored touchscreen support, and the Deck can pass touch input through Steam Input. The games are still designed around buttons and keyboard commands, so touchscreen operation should be treated as an auxiliary input rather than the primary control scheme.

Can I play the GOG versions on Steam Deck?

The GOG editions are DRM-free Windows downloads, but the documented Deck setup and controller feature flags apply to Steam. Installing a GOG copy would require adding and configuring it manually; the Steam restoration is the supported, lower-friction route described for Deck play.

Which game is easier to control with a handheld layout?

The first game emphasizes exploration, puzzles and evasion, so a simple movement-and-interaction layout is usually sufficient. The sequel adds melee, spells and potions, making a complete attack and dodge mapping more important before you begin.
