If Windows says edge.dll is missing or was not found, Microsoft Edge cannot load one of the files it needs. The message does not identify a single cause: the file may be missing, damaged, or impossible for Edge to load after an update or installation problem.
Restart first, then use Edge’s built-in Repair option, update or reinstall Edge from Microsoft’s official installer, and repair Windows components with DISM followed by SFC when other Windows files also appear affected. The procedures below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10 and move from the least disruptive fix to recovery options that can change more of the system.

What does an “edge.dll is missing” error mean?
edge.dll is a dynamic-link library associated with Microsoft Edge. When Windows reports that it is missing or was not found, the Edge process cannot load a required component. The filename alone does not prove whether the file was deleted, corrupted, left behind by an incomplete update, or blocked by a wider Windows component problem.
Because the exact cause is not established by the message, treat it as an Edge installation or Windows-integrity problem rather than trying to replace one file in isolation. A complete Edge repair or reinstall restores the application files as a set and is safer than downloading a DLL from an unrelated website.

Is the message itself proof of malware?
No. A missing-DLL message is not a diagnosis of malware. It can follow an interrupted update, damaged installation files, or ordinary system corruption. Keep your normal security software enabled, but use the official Edge repair and installation paths for this particular error.
What should I try first when Edge cannot find edge.dll?
Start with a restart, then test Edge again. Restarting clears a stuck Edge process and can complete a pending Windows or browser update, but it is a diagnostic first step, not a guaranteed repair.

How do I repair Microsoft Edge without removing my browser data?
Windows provides an Edge-specific Repair command. Microsoft says that, when you are connected to the internet, Repair should not affect browser data or settings.
- Sign in with an administrator account and make sure Edge is fully closed.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features if that is the label shown on your build.
- Find Microsoft Edge in the list, select its menu, and choose Modify. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows asks.
- In the Edge setup window, select Repair. Keep the computer connected to the internet and let the process finish.
- Restart Windows if prompted, then open Edge and test the page or profile that previously failed.
Repair is the narrowest intervention because it targets the Edge installation rather than changing unrelated Windows components. If Repair cannot run, reports that files are unavailable, or leaves the same error in place, move to an update or complete reinstall.
How can I update Edge when it opens, and what if it does not?
If Edge opens briefly
Use Settings and more (⋯) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Edge checks for a newer build and downloads it when one is available. Allow the update to complete, then select the restart option shown by Edge.
If Edge will not open at all
Use another browser to obtain the installer from Microsoft’s official Microsoft Edge download page. This is preferable to searching for an individual edge.dll file because the installer can replace the complete set of application files and dependencies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I reinstall Edge safely?
Reinstalling is appropriate when Edge’s installation or update files are missing or corrupt and the Modify > Repair path did not restore the browser.
- Open another browser and go to the official Microsoft Edge download page.
- Download the installer for your Windows edition and architecture.
- Close any Edge windows and run the installer. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Allow setup to download and replace the Edge program files. Do not interrupt the computer while installation is running.
- Restart Windows, open Edge, and check whether the missing-DLL message has disappeared.
Do not use a standalone DLL-download site as the primary remedy. Even if a file has the same name, it may be the wrong build or lack the other files that Edge expects. The official installer keeps the application components matched to one another.
When should I run DISM and SFC?
Use Windows component repair when the problem is not limited to Edge—for example, if other Windows features are reporting missing or damaged files—or when a clean Edge repair and reinstall do not resolve the launch failure. Microsoft documents running DISM before SFC.
Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - At the prompt, enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter and wait for the operation to complete. Keep the window open; the percentage may pause while Windows services the component store.
Run System File Checker after DISM
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter and let verification reach 100 percent. SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy when a valid copy is available.
- Restart Windows after SFC reports completion, then test Edge again.
Neither command is an edge.dll-specific guarantee. DISM repairs the Windows image and SFC checks protected system files; they are most useful when the browser failure is one symptom of broader corruption.

What if the error began after a Windows or Edge change?
If Edge worked until a recent update, driver change, application installation, or other system change, a rollback can be more appropriate than repeatedly reinstalling the browser.
Use System Restore
Open Start, search for Create a restore point, open the System Properties result, select System Restore, and choose a restore point dated before the failure. Review the affected programs list before confirming. System Restore changes system files and settings but is not a substitute for backing up personal files.
Uninstall a recent update
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and review updates installed immediately before the problem. Remove an update only when the timing is clear and Windows offers it as removable; restart and test Edge afterward.
Which repair option has the smallest impact?
The following comparison shows why the sequence moves from Edge-specific actions to full recovery.
| Option | Scope | Disruption | Expected data impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge Repair | Microsoft Edge installation | Lowest | Microsoft says browser data and settings should not be affected |
| Official Edge reinstall | Replaces Edge application and update files | Low to moderate | Targets the browser; review setup prompts and profile behavior before proceeding |
| DISM followed by SFC | Windows component store and protected system files | Moderate; command-line operation requires elevation | Repairs system files rather than intentionally deleting personal documents |
| System Restore or update rollback | System state around a selected date or update | Moderate to broad | Can remove applications, drivers, or settings added after the restore point or update |
| Reset this PC or full Windows reinstall | Most of the Windows installation | Highest | Depends on the chosen reset or reinstall option; back up files and verify account and licensing details first |
What should I do if none of these fixes works?
Escalate in stages rather than jumping directly to a reset. First confirm that Edge Repair, the official reinstall, DISM, and SFC have each completed without an error. If the failure clearly follows a recent change, try System Restore or uninstall that update.
Only after those targeted options fail should you consider Reset this PC or reinstalling Windows from recovery or installation media. Before either action, copy personal files to a separate drive, ensure you can sign back into your Microsoft account, and confirm the Windows edition and activation information you need. A reset or reinstall affects more of the computer than an Edge repair and may require applications to be installed again.
What mistakes should I avoid with a missing edge.dll message?
- Do not download a lone DLL from an unverified site. The file may not match your Edge build and does not repair a damaged installation around it.
- Do not run DISM and SFC in the wrong order. Microsoft documents DISM first, followed by
sfc /scannow. - Do not interrupt repairs. Closing the setup window or Command Prompt before completion can leave the original problem unchanged.
- Do not reset Windows before backing up. Reset and reinstall are broad recovery operations, not routine Edge troubleshooting.
- Do not assume one cause from the filename. The message identifies a loading failure, not whether an update, installation, or Windows component is responsible.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings, clear temporary and cache files, and provide tools such as vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a missing edge.dll error affect programs other than Edge?
The filename points to an Edge-related component, so an isolated failure normally appears when Edge launches. If unrelated Windows features also fail or report damaged files, treat that pattern as evidence of a wider Windows-integrity problem and prioritize component repair rather than repeatedly reinstalling the browser.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is it safe to keep using another browser while Edge is broken?
Yes. A second browser can provide internet access for the official Edge installer and Microsoft support pages while you troubleshoot. Keep Windows updated and avoid replacing the missing file with an unverified download.
Why did Edge Repair ask for an internet connection?
Repair may need to obtain replacement installation files, so Microsoft instructs users to connect before selecting Repair. If the connection is unavailable, use another browser or network first and then rerun the repair.
When is Windows recovery media preferable to Reset this PC?
Recovery or installation media is useful when Windows cannot start normally or the built-in reset environment is damaged. It is still a broad recovery path: back up personal data and verify the edition and licensing information before starting.
