If Windows reports that nvcloth_x64.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the affected game or Unreal Engine application cannot start. You may also see “The specified module could not be found,” even when nvcloth_x64.dll is visibly present.
The 60-second answer
nvcloth_x64.dll is a 64-bit NVIDIA NvCloth runtime used for cloth simulation in some games and Unreal Engine-based applications. It is normally part of the game’s own PhysX bundle, not a Windows component and not a file that should be downloaded into System32.

Start with these steps:
- Restart Windows and launch the affected program again.
- Use the game launcher’s Verify or Verify integrity command.
- Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable if the file is restored but still will not load.
- Reinstall the game or application if verification does not replace the file.
- Check antivirus quarantine and avoid mixing PhysX files from another game.
Do not begin by copying a replacement DLL into a Windows folder, running regsvr32, or reinstalling your graphics driver.

The _x64 suffix identifies a 64-bit build. A typical packaged-game location resembles:
<Game>EngineBinariesThirdPartyPhysX3Win64VS2015NvCloth_x64.dll
The exact folder varies by application. The file may instead sit beside the game executable or in another vendor-specific runtime directory.
A matching bundle may contain files such as:
PhysX3_x64.dll
PhysX3Common_x64.dll
PhysX3Cooking_x64.dll
PxFoundation_x64.dll
NvCloth_x64.dll
Do not assume every installation contains the same files, version, size, or folder structure. The game or application that installed the file owns the correct copy.
Recommended Free Tools
nvcloth_x64.dll is not normally supplied by Windows, Microsoft, or the NVIDIA graphics-driver package. It should generally remain in the application’s installation directory rather than C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
What the error message really means
“The program can’t start because nvcloth_x64.dll is missing”
The file may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or omitted during installation. A failed update can also leave the game with an incomplete PhysX directory.
Repair the application through its launcher before attempting Windows-wide repairs.
“The specified module could not be found”
This wording does not always mean that nvcloth_x64.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependent runtime or PhysX files.
That is why copying only nvcloth_x64.dll often changes nothing. Restore the complete matching bundle and repair Visual C++ if necessary.
“nvcloth_x64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This usually indicates a damaged file, an incompatible binary, or a dependency and architecture mismatch. Do not replace it with a DLL from another game or another PhysX generation.
Error 0xc000007b
In this context, 0xc000007b commonly indicates an invalid image or a 32-bit and 64-bit dependency mismatch. Because nvcloth_x64.dll is 64-bit, the application must load it with compatible 64-bit supporting files.

A 64-bit Windows installation can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. Installing the x64 Visual C++ package does not replace the x86 package required by a separate 32-bit program.
Fix 1: Verify the game or application files
This is the most likely solution because nvcloth_x64.dll is normally an application-local file.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
Steam should download or replace damaged files. If it reports that files were repaired but the same error returns, restart Windows and run the verification again. Repeated failures suggest an antivirus action, an incomplete update, storage trouble, or a modified game directory.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Click the three dots beside its name.
- Choose Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait for the check to complete, then start the game.
Verification replaces damaged files without removing saved data. If the file is still absent, use the application’s repair option or proceed to a reinstall.
Other launchers
Look for Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or Validate files in the game’s settings. If the program came from a vendor installer, run that installer again and select Repair when offered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAfter repair, confirm that the restored file is inside the game’s own folder. Do not move it to a Windows system directory.
Fix 2: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
Use this step when verification restores nvcloth_x64.dll but Windows still says that the specified module could not be found, or when the application shows 0xc000007b.
Some NvCloth builds depend on Microsoft Visual C++ runtime components. The exact dependencies can differ between builds, so this is a plausible repair rather than proof of the cause.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Open the entry for the current x64 package.
- Select Modify or Change.
- Choose Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the package is missing, download it only from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable page. For this 64-bit DLL, begin with vc_redist.x64.exe. Install vc_redist.x86.exe as well when the affected game, launcher, or another component is 32-bit. Microsoft’s current v14 packages support applications built with the Visual Studio 2015–2022 toolsets, subject to supported Windows versions.
If the game contains a _CommonRedist or prerequisites folder, run the Visual C++ installer supplied with that game first. Use Repair when the installer provides it.

Manually comparing runtime DLL names is rarely productive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for corrupted Windows components and show what needs attention, while its full version performs the repair; the game’s own verification or reinstallation remains the definitive fix for a missing game-owned file.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a genuine file after a game update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected game directory or
NvCloth_x64.dll. - Check the file path and detection details carefully.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The file is inside the genuine installation directory.
- The game came from its official launcher or vendor.
- The installation has not been modified by an unofficial patch or suspicious mod.
- A current security scan does not identify broader malware.
After restoring it, run the launcher’s file verification. If you are uncertain about the detection, do not restore the file. Remove and reinstall the game from its official source instead. Ask the game vendor how to create an appropriate exclusion rather than disabling antivirus protection globally.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the application
If verification cannot restore the file, reinstall the affected program.
- Back up save files if they are not synchronized by the launcher.
- Uninstall the game or application from its launcher or from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it to the intended drive.
- Launch it before adding mods, reshade tools, unofficial patches, or custom DLLs.
- If it starts, add modifications one at a time and test after each change.
A clean reinstall is especially important when the PhysX directory contains files from different games, engine versions, or PhysX generations. Never replace a 64-bit NvCloth file with a 32-bit copy or rename another PhysX DLL to make the filename match.
Fix 5: Check the installation path and affected executable
The correct repair depends on identifying which program is asking for the DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Read the full error window and note the application name.
- Open Task Manager if the program briefly appears there.
- Right-click the process and choose Open file location.
- In the launcher, open the game’s installation directory using Manage, Browse local files, or an equivalent command.
- Search that directory for
nvcloth_x64.dll. - Also check nearby
PhysX,Binaries,Engine, orThirdPartyfolders.
If several games contain copies, repair the copy belonging to the executable that fails. Do not copy a working file from one installation to another. Even files with the same name can require different companion libraries.
Fix 6: Update drivers only for broader graphics problems
nvcloth_x64.dll is associated with NVIDIA technology, but it is not normally repaired by reinstalling the NVIDIA display driver. Update or clean-reinstall the graphics driver when the game also shows display-driver crashes, GPU initialization errors, black screens, or other graphics failures.
For a driver repair:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean vendor-driver installation, download the driver from the GPU manufacturer and select the clean-install option if the installer provides one. Do not use a driver change as a substitute for verifying the game bundle.
Manually finding stale drivers across several hardware categories can take time and may lead to the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater scans for outdated drivers and identifies what needs updating, while its full version installs the driver; it is not a replacement for reinstalling the game that owns nvcloth_x64.dll.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components
Windows component repair is secondary because this DLL normally belongs to a game or application. Use it when multiple unrelated programs have damaged-system symptoms.

- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands can repair Windows components, but SFC should not be expected to recreate a game-owned nvcloth_x64.dll.
Do not add Windows Features or use regsvr32 for this problem. Windows Features do not install the game’s PhysX bundle, and regsvr32 is intended for self-registering OLE or ActiveX components. An ordinary game runtime DLL is not repaired by registering it.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading nvcloth_x64.dll from a random DLL site can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible game or PhysX build. It may also leave the missing dependency untouched.
The safe sources are:
- The affected game’s official launcher verification or repair function.
- The official installer for the affected application.
- Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable packages.
- The hardware manufacturer’s official driver page when a separate graphics problem exists.
Never copy this file to System32, SysWOW64, or another unrelated application folder.
If the error keeps coming back
Check these conditions in order:
- Windows Security or third-party antivirus logs for repeated quarantine.
- Available disk space and launcher write permissions.
- Disk health if files repeatedly disappear or become corrupted.
- Ransomware protection blocking the launcher.
- Mods or unofficial patches changing the PhysX directory.
- A failed game update that requires a clean reinstall.
- Whether only one Windows user profile is affected.
If only one profile has the problem, test the application from a new local Windows profile. A profile-specific security or path setting may be interfering with the installation.
System Restore is a last resort for a system-wide change, not the first response to an application-local DLL error. Back up personal files before using it.
FAQ
Is nvcloth_x64.dll made by Microsoft?
No. NvCloth is NVIDIA technology, but the copy on your computer is normally bundled by the game or Unreal Engine application that uses it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does it belong in System32?
Normally, no. Keep it with the application’s executable and matching PhysX files.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
The _x64 suffix identifies a 64-bit DLL. Do not substitute an x86 file.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. Game runtime DLLs generally are not self-registering components, so registration will not repair a missing dependency.
Should I reinstall NVIDIA graphics drivers?
Only when other GPU or graphics-driver symptoms point in that direction. Reinstalling the display driver is not the normal fix for a missing application-local NvCloth file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if the file exists but Windows still cannot load it?
Repair the complete game bundle, then repair the appropriate Visual C++ Redistributable. The message may refer to a missing dependency rather than the named file itself.
