The correct Eevee evolution depends on the game. In most core-series titles, use a Water Stone for Vaporeon, Thunder Stone for Jolteon, or Fire Stone for Flareon; build friendship and level up during the day for Espeon or at night for Umbreon; use a Moss Rock or Leaf Stone for Leafeon; use an Ice Rock or Ice Stone for Glaceon; and give Eevee a Fairy-type move plus the required relationship level for Sylveon. Pokémon GO, Pokémon XD, Let’s Go, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Legends: Arceus, and Legends: Z-A each modify those rules.
Eevee has eight standard evolutions, but there is no single recipe that works in every Pokémon game. The item, friendship system, clock, map location, and even the way evolution is triggered change by title. Check your game below before using an item or leveling Eevee.

How do I evolve Eevee into Vaporeon?
Use a Water Stone on Eevee. This is one of the three direct stone evolutions and does not require friendship, a time of day, a move, or a special map location.
The Water Stone route is available in the early games that contain Eevee and Vaporeon, including Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, and remains the standard method in later core-series games. If your title has Vaporeon in its available Pokédex, the item-based method is the reliable choice.

How do I evolve Eevee into Jolteon?
Use a Thunder Stone on Eevee. Jolteon is another direct item evolution, so the friendship and day/night rules used for Espeon and Umbreon do not apply.
Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen all use the Thunder Stone route, as do later mainline games that include Jolteon. Pokémon GO is different: it normally charges 25 Eevee Candy and uses its own nickname or buddy rules instead of a Thunder Stone.
How do I evolve Eevee into Flareon?
Use a Fire Stone on Eevee. Flareon is the third simple stone evolution and does not need a friendship threshold, clock condition, Fairy-type move, or rock location.
The Fire Stone method works in the early Kanto games and in later core-series titles that include Flareon. In Pokémon GO, use the Flareon-specific method described in the Pokémon GO section rather than looking for a Fire Stone.
How do I evolve Eevee into Espeon?
In a standard core-series game, raise Eevee’s friendship to the required level and level it up during the day. The level-up must occur while no competing evolution condition has priority.
Friendship thresholds
The recorded threshold is 220 friendship before Generation VIII and 160 from Generation VIII onward. These are generation rules for the standard core series, not universal numbers for every spin-off. A title’s own friendship display and activities determine how you reach the threshold.

Preventing the wrong evolution
Move away from a Moss Rock or Ice Rock before the level-up, because Leafeon and Glaceon conditions take priority. If Eevee also satisfies Sylveon’s requirement, Sylveon takes priority over Espeon and Umbreon, so remove the Fairy-type-move condition when you want Espeon.
Games without the normal clock
FireRed and LeafGreen cannot normally produce Espeon because those games have no day/night clock. Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness uses a Sun Shard in the bag for the Espeon choice instead of the ordinary clock-based evolution.
How do I evolve Eevee into Umbreon?
Raise Eevee’s friendship to the required level and level it up at night in a standard core-series game. As with Espeon, avoid a Moss Rock, Ice Rock, or active Sylveon condition so another branch does not win.
FireRed and LeafGreen have no normal clock and therefore cannot perform the standard Umbreon evolution. Pokémon XD substitutes a Moon Shard in the bag for the nighttime condition.

The location-based method is to level up Eevee near a Moss Rock. In Generation VIII onward, games that support the alternative let you use a Leaf Stone instead; Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl support both routes.
Location-based games
Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum introduced the Moss Rock route. Black, White, Black 2, White 2, X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon continue to use the location-based approach. HeartGold and SoulSilver do not contain a Moss Rock, so Leafeon cannot be evolved there by the normal method.

Stone-based games
Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Scarlet and Violet, and other supported Generation VIII-or-later titles provide the Leaf Stone alternative. In Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A, evolution is selected manually once the relevant condition is met rather than waiting for a level-up event.
How do I evolve Eevee into Glaceon?
Level up Eevee near an Ice Rock in games that use location evolution, or use an Ice Stone in games that provide the modern alternative. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl support both the Ice Stone and their Icy Rock location.
Location-based games
Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum introduced the Ice Rock, and the location method continues through Black and White, Black 2 and White 2, X and Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Sun and Moon, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. HeartGold and SoulSilver lack an Ice Rock, so the normal Glaceon evolution is unavailable there.
Stone-based games
Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Scarlet and Violet, and supported later titles allow an Ice Stone. Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A let you choose the evolution manually after the condition is satisfied.
How do I evolve Eevee into Sylveon?
Sylveon needs two things: Eevee must know a Fairy-type move, and it must meet the relationship requirement used by that game. In Generations VI and VII, that means two affection levels; from Generation VIII onward, it means high friendship.
Generation VI and VII
X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon use the affection-based requirement. Keep the Fairy-type move on Eevee and reach two affection levels before triggering the evolution.

Generation VIII onward
Sword and Shield, Legends: Arceus, Scarlet and Violet, and the researched eligibility table for Legends: Z-A use high friendship with a Fairy-type move. These games do not use the older two-level affection rule for Sylveon.
Priority warning
Leafeon and Glaceon take priority over Sylveon when Eevee is at the relevant rock, and Sylveon takes priority over Espeon and Umbreon when its move and relationship conditions are met. To obtain Sylveon, stay away from Moss Rock and Ice Rock locations; to obtain Espeon or Umbreon, remove the Fairy-type-move condition as well.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Sylveon is not included in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. No friendship, move, stone, or location combination can produce Sylveon within those games.
Which Pokémon games support each Eeveelution?
The title matters more than the general Eevee rule. This matrix separates the major game families and highlights the exceptions most likely to cause a failed evolution.

How does Pokémon GO evolve Eevee?
Pokémon GO uses 25 Eevee Candy and separate buddy, lure, and nickname conditions. Core-series stones, friendship numbers, and level-up timing do not apply.
Normal Pokémon GO methods
- Vaporeon: 25 Eevee Candy, with the Vaporeon choice available through the normal random evolution system unless the one-time nickname method is used.
- Jolteon: 25 Eevee Candy, with the normal random evolution system unless the one-time nickname method is used.
- Flareon: 25 Eevee Candy, with the normal random evolution system unless the one-time nickname method is used.
- Leafeon: Be within range of a PokéStop with a Mossy Lure Module active, then spend 25 Eevee Candy.
- Glaceon: Be within range of a PokéStop with a Glacial Lure Module active, then spend 25 Eevee Candy.
- Espeon: Walk 10 km with Eevee as your active buddy, keep it as your buddy, and evolve during the day for 25 Eevee Candy.
- Umbreon: Walk 10 km with Eevee as your active buddy, keep it as your buddy, and evolve at night for 25 Eevee Candy.
- Sylveon: Earn 70 buddy hearts with Eevee, then spend 25 Eevee Candy.
One-time nickname guarantees
Rename Eevee Rainer for Vaporeon, Sparky for Jolteon, Pyro for Flareon, Sakura for Espeon, Tamao for Umbreon, Linnea for Leafeon, Rea for Glaceon, or Kira for Sylveon. Each nickname trick guarantees its matching evolution only once; after that, use the normal Pokémon GO condition.

What is different about Pokémon UNITE?
Pokémon UNITE is not a reliable reference for Eevee evolution. Its Pokémon evolve through battle-level progression, not through core-series items, friendship, map rocks, Fairy-type moves, or time-of-day rules, so its mechanics should not be mixed into the game-by-game table above.
How do I stop Eevee from evolving into the wrong form?
Identify the evolution system used by your title before leveling or selecting an item. Then use this checklist:

- For Leafeon or Glaceon, use the rock or stone method that your title supports instead of assuming every game has both.
- In Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A, check the party’s available evolution command and select it manually once the condition is displayed.
- In Pokémon GO, verify the required lure, buddy distance, hearts, or nickname before spending Candy.

What should I know about current games and Pokémon HOME?
Nintendo Support states that Pokémon Legends: Z-A is mutually compatible with Pokémon HOME. Compatibility does not mean unrestricted movement: HOME transfers remain subject to each game’s species, form, and transfer restrictions, so moving an Eevee or an Eeveelution is not a substitute for checking the destination game’s own availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the friendship numbers 220 and 160 different?
They belong to different core-series generation rules: the recorded threshold is 220 before Generation VIII and 160 from Generation VIII onward. Pokémon GO and other spin-offs use their own relationship systems, so those values should not be applied outside the games that use the standard friendship mechanic.
Can Pokémon HOME unlock an Eeveelution that my game does not support?
No. HOME can connect compatible titles, but it does not add missing species or forms to a game’s roster. Transfer eligibility and form restrictions still apply to the receiving game.

Why is Sylveon unavailable in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?
Those games do not include Sylveon in their available Eeveelution set. The Fairy-type move and friendship conditions used elsewhere therefore have no effect in BDSP.
What if the nickname trick in Pokémon GO has already been used?
The nickname guarantee is single-use for each evolution. After it is consumed, use the corresponding lure, buddy-distance, buddy-heart, or ordinary Candy method instead.
