Godrick’s Great Rune is the most useful Great Rune for most players because it boosts every attribute, making it broadly helpful across builds. Radahn’s and Morgott’s are strong alternatives for resource capacity and survivability. Rykard’s, Malenia’s, and Mohg’s are more situational, while the Great Rune of the Unborn is for rebirth—not a combat buff.
This is a general-purpose ranking, not a universal in-game tier list: your build, encounter, and willingness to use a Rune Arc can change which rune helps most.

How this Great Rune ranking works
The ranking weighs how broadly a rune helps, how often its effect applies, how dependent it is on a particular build or game system, and whether it comes with a tradeoff. The six combat Great Runes are not interchangeable: some improve character resources, while others depend on defeating enemies, attacking after taking damage, or using summoned spirits.
Bandai Namco describes the Great Runes as shards of the Elden Ring claimed by Marika’s demigod offspring on its official Elden Ring page. The specific effects below are gameplay mechanics summarized by the community-maintained Elden Ring Wiki; the ranking is an editorial comparison of those effects.

Every Great Rune, ranked by usefulness
1. Godrick’s Great Rune — best general-purpose choice
Godrick’s Great Rune raises all attributes by five. Its breadth makes it useful across many builds and situations, rather than tying its value to a particular enemy or playstyle. The practical benefit will still vary: a character does not necessarily gain equal value from every attribute.
2. Radahn’s Great Rune — broad resource boost
Radahn’s Great Rune raises maximum HP, FP, and stamina. That mix can suit characters that draw on several resource pools. Whether it beats Godrick’s all-attribute boost depends on your build and current attributes.

3. Morgott’s Great Rune — focused survivability
Morgott’s Great Rune raises maximum HP, making it a straightforward defensive option. It is a clear pick when additional health is the priority, but it does not offer the same range of benefits as Godrick’s or Radahn’s rune.
4. Rykard’s Great Rune — useful while clearing enemies
Rykard’s Great Rune restores HP when enemies are defeated. That condition makes it more appealing while exploring areas with repeated enemy encounters than during a fight against a lone boss, where opportunities to defeat other enemies may be limited.

5. Malenia’s Great Rune — recovery for aggressive play
Malenia’s Great Rune lets you recover some HP by attacking after taking damage, but it reduces the effectiveness of healing flasks. It is therefore a tradeoff, not a free increase to survivability: its appeal depends on whether you can capitalize on the attack-based recovery and accept weaker flask healing.
Bandai Namco’s version 1.12 patch notes, published June 20, 2024, say the Crimson Tears healing reduction was decreased and Malenia’s on-attack healing effect was increased. Earlier, the version 1.06 patch notes, published August 9, 2022, documented a fix for an HP recovery bug involving Malenia’s Great Rune and recovery from incantations and items other than the Crimson Flask. These are selected patch-history details, not a complete audit of every mechanic on the latest game build.

6. Mohg’s Great Rune — specialized summon and blood effects
Mohg’s Great Rune is not a general stat boost. Its value depends on mechanics involving summoned spirits and blood loss, so it is most relevant to players who use those systems. In the version 1.12 notes, Bandai Namco says it increased the duration of the attack-power effect triggered when a nearby summoned spirit causes bleeding. That patch detail describes one adjustment, not every effect or condition of the rune.
7. Great Rune of the Unborn — rebirth, not a combat buff
The Great Rune of the Unborn enables rebirth through Rennala, allowing you to reallocate your character’s attributes. It belongs in a list of every Great Rune, but it is not comparable to the six combat runes that are equipped and activated for a benediction.
Which Great Rune is best for your situation?
- Choose Godrick’s for a broadly useful boost across attributes.
- Choose Radahn’s if extra HP, FP, and stamina are more relevant to your character than an all-attribute increase.
- Choose Morgott’s when you specifically want more maximum HP.
- Choose Rykard’s for areas where you expect to defeat enemies repeatedly.
- Consider Malenia’s if you are willing to trade some flask-healing effectiveness for recovery through subsequent attacks.
- Consider Mohg’s when your play depends on its summon- or blood-related mechanics.
- Use the Great Rune of the Unborn for rebirth through Rennala, rather than as an equipped combat effect.
The ordering among Godrick’s, Radahn’s, and Morgott’s can reasonably shift with your build and current attributes. A player who values one resource or mechanic especially highly may also rank a specialized rune above its position here.
Do Great Runes need to be activated?
For the ordinary combat Great Runes, restoring the rune at its corresponding Divine Tower is part of the standard process before its benediction can be used. You then equip it and activate it with a Rune Arc. The Great Rune of the Unborn is the exception to that combat-rune pattern because it enables rebirth instead. The community-maintained Great Runes reference describes the rune mechanics; Bandai Namco’s patch notes cited above document selected balance changes rather than every activation step.
