To complete Gurranq, Beast Clergyman’s quest in Elden Ring, find and give him all nine Deathroots. Speak to D, Hunter of the Dead, while you have a Deathroot and follow the map marker to the portal in Limgrave that leads to the Bestial Sanctum. After your fourth turn-in, Gurranq attacks; damage him until he stops, but do not kill him. Then return and continue the exchanges.
How to reach Gurranq at the Bestial Sanctum
- Acquire a Deathroot. One early option is defeating the Tibia Mariner at Summonwater Village in Limgrave.
- Talk to D, Hunter of the Dead. With a Deathroot in your inventory, speak to D and follow the map marker to the portal in East Limgrave. Guides describe D’s involvement slightly differently, so treat the marker as a route to Gurranq rather than the only possible way to reach him.
- Take the portal to Dragonbarrow. It brings you to the Bestial Sanctum in the northeast of Caelid. Gurranq is at the end of the hall.
Gurranq gives you the Beast Eye during the early exchanges. It quivers when an uncollected Deathroot is nearby: use that as a proximity warning, then check the locations below to identify which one you may have missed. Gamer Guides and GamesRadar+ cover the route and the Beast Eye.

All nine Deathroot locations
Use this checklist to track the roots. Some come from bosses; others are in chests in catacombs after defeating the dungeon boss.
- Limgrave — Summonwater Village: Defeat the Tibia Mariner.
- Limgrave — Deathtouched Catacombs: Open the chest after defeating the Black Knife Assassin.
- Liurnia — south of Artist’s Shack: Defeat the Tibia Mariner.
- Liurnia — Black Knife Catacombs: Open the chest after defeating Cemetery Shade.
- Mt. Gelmir / Altus border — Wyndham Ruins: Defeat the Tibia Mariner.
- Mt. Gelmir — Gelmir Hero’s Grave: Defeat the Red Wolf of the Champion.
- Mountaintops of the Giants — southwest of Castle Sol: Defeat the Tibia Mariner.
- Mountaintops of the Giants — Giants’ Mountaintops Catacombs: Open the chest after defeating the Ulcerated Tree Spirit.
- Mountaintops / Hidden Path to the Haligtree: Open the chest in the hidden catacombs after defeating the Stray Mimic Tear. On the main staircase, a broken railing reveals a drop onto an invisible path leading to the catacombs.

Gurranq’s rewards for each Deathroot

If you hand in several Deathroots at once, rest at the nearby Site of Grace if you do not receive all the expected rewards immediately; Gamer Guides notes that resting may be needed.
What to do when Gurranq attacks after the fourth root
The attack is part of the exchange sequence, not a sign that the quest has broken. Deal enough damage for Gurranq to relent, but do not kill him. The guides differ on how much damage this takes, so there is no reliable exact threshold to target.

Gamer Guides suggests using Spirit Ashes, ranged attacks, or retreating outside the Sanctum doorway; it also describes using the Black Blade Kindred doorway as an alternative tactic. These are options, not guaranteed methods. Once Gurranq has stopped attacking, reload the area or return after resetting it, then speak to him and continue turning in Deathroots.

After the ninth turn-in, Gurranq gives additional dialogue and bids farewell, ending this exchange quest. Gamer Guides says he later appears under a different guise; a Gamerpillar walkthrough identifies the later encounter in Crumbling Farum Azula as Maliketh. This connection is described by walkthrough sources, not established here as an official developer explanation. The guides do not establish that completing Gurranq’s exchanges changes the game’s main ending.
