Marika’s children are demigods. After the Ring breaks, they claim its fragments, called Great Runes. Possessing a Great Rune gives a demigod a claim in the struggle that follows, but it does not settle the succession or restore the world. The official game description introduces this conflict as the central condition in which the player arrives; it does not present a simple good-versus-evil contest.

Who are the Tarnished, and why do they return?
The Tarnished are people who lost the grace associated with the ruling order and were exiled, or descended from those exiles. Their return is the player’s viewpoint: they come back to the Lands Between when the realm is broken and seek the status of Elden Lord.
Godfrey belongs in this backstory. He was a former Elden Lord and is connected to the exile history that defines the Tarnished. You do not need to memorize every title around him before beginning; the important point is that the protagonist is not an ordinary local citizen arriving during peacetime. The Tarnished returns as an outsider with a possible claim in a succession crisis.

That viewpoint explains why the game can introduce ruined regions, rival demigods and ancient institutions without assuming that the player already belongs to any of them. You are learning the setting at the same time as the returning Tarnished is re-entering it.
What happens at the beginning of the game?
In the publisher’s story summary, a Tarnished crosses the fog, meets Melina and begins a journey toward the Erdtree. This is the most useful early-journey orientation for someone who has not played: the character is summoned into a damaged world, receives a reason to travel, and moves toward the symbolic center of the realm.
Melina is therefore a useful name to recognize, but her presence in the game does not confirm that she will appear in the film or that an actor has been assigned to her. The official movie announcement does not provide that mapping. Treat the opening as game context, not as a synopsis of Alex Garland’s adaptation.

Shadow of the Erdtree follows Miquella into the Realm of Shadow and explores material connected to Marika’s past. It can deepen your understanding of the world’s history, but neither Bandai Namco’s film announcement nor the available game materials confirm that the expansion is in the movie’s script.
The practical distinction is important:
