The Tarnished are people who lost the light of Grace, fell out of favor with the Golden Order, and were driven from the Lands Between. After Queen Marika shattered the Elden Ring and war broke out over its fragments, Grace called them back. Their broad mission is to reach the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord—but the game does not give every Tarnished, including the player character, one fixed personal history or motive.
What makes someone Tarnished?
In the official account, being Tarnished is a condition of lost favor, not a stated ethnicity. Bandai Namco Europe explains that Grace shines through the eyes of people living in harmony with the Golden Order. When someone falls into disfavor, that light dies; the person is shunned and known as Tarnished. Bandai Namco’s explainer gives the publisher’s concise definition.
The distinction matters: the term describes what happened to these people and their relationship to Grace. The official premise does not say they all share the same ancestry, culture, or reason for wanting to return.
Why were the Tarnished exiled?
Godfrey, Marika’s first Elden Lord, is the key early example. Before the Shattering, he was deprived of Grace and left the Lands Between with his kin and warriors. The publisher’s explainer identifies this departure as part of the Tarnished’s history, placing their exile before the Elden Ring’s destruction.
Godfrey’s story establishes a precedent: people once connected to the order of the Lands Between could lose Grace and be cast out. It does not establish that every Tarnished alive at the time of the game is one of Godfrey’s direct descendants.
What changed when the Elden Ring shattered?
Queen Marika rules the Lands Between, and the Elden Ring is the source of the Erdtree. When the Ring was broken, Marika’s demigod offspring claimed its shards, known as Great Runes. The official game premise says the strength they gained became tainted and triggered the war called the Shattering. The official game page connects that conflict to the Tarnished’s return.
Rank #2
After the Ring’s destruction and the ensuing war, Grace calls the Tarnished back from beyond the fog. They had been spurned and exiled; now they are guided toward the Elden Ring. That is the narrative turn that gives their return a purpose: the political and cosmic order has broken down, and they are summoned into the struggle around its restoration or replacement.
What are the Tarnished supposed to do?
The publisher’s stated goal is direct: stand before the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord. The official tagline tells the Tarnished to be guided by Grace and wield the Ring’s power. The story summary adds the opening arrangement: Melina offers an accord, and the Tarnished begins by taking her to the base of the Erdtree. Bandai Namco’s story summary describes that starting point.

- Return to the Lands Between: Grace guides the exiled Tarnished back from beyond the fog.
- Accept Melina’s accord: She accompanies the Tarnished, whose initial aim is to take her to the Erdtree’s base.
- Grow stronger and pursue the Ring: The journey brings the Tarnished into contact with allies and enemies as they move toward the stated goal of Elden Lordship.
This is the broad mission, not a complete personal biography. The player chooses a build and makes decisions along the way; the official summaries do not define one universal motive or origin for the player character.
What does Grace mean for the returning Tarnished?
Grace has two clear functions in this explanation. It marks belonging: its light shines through the eyes of those in harmony with the Golden Order, and it fades when they fall into disfavor. It also guides the exiled Tarnished back toward the Elden Ring. Those roles are stated in the publisher’s explainer and game premise.
Those descriptions do not settle every question about who or what ultimately directs Grace, or how much agency it has. Claims about its deeper theology or intentions are interpretations, rather than conclusions established by the official summaries alone.

The publisher’s account establishes the sequence—loss of Grace, exile, the Shattering, return, and the pursuit of Elden Lordship—but it is not a full biography for each Tarnished or an explanation of every ending. It also does not say that every returning Tarnished wants the same outcome for the same reason. Those details are left to the game’s characters, events, and player choices.
