To complete the Oldest Gaol and earn the Old Gaol trophy in Elden Ring Nightreign, use a Stonesword Key to open Evergaols until you find one containing a stronger boss, then defeat that boss. The special gaol looks like an ordinary Evergaol on the map before you enter, so opening a gaol alone does not earn the trophy.
How to find and complete an Oldest Gaol
- Get a Stonesword Key. Evergaols require a key. Bandai Namco’s starter guide says Keys can be found as treasure and are sometimes sold by merchants.
- Locate an Evergaol. Evergaols appear as key locations on the expedition map. The Oldest Gaol has no distinct marker that identifies it in advance.
- Open the gaol and check the encounter. The trophy encounter is identified by its stronger boss, not by a different map icon or a special appearance before entry.
- Defeat the stronger boss. The trophy is tied to beating the boss; simply opening an ordinary Evergaol is not enough.
PowerPyx’s Old Gaol trophy guide describes the stronger-boss encounter and says the trophy unlocks after the boss is defeated. The available guidance does not establish an exhaustive list of qualifying bosses or a guaranteed spawn rate.

What to do if the trophy does not unlock
If you opened a gaol but did not get the trophy, you may have encountered an ordinary Evergaol. Continue opening other gaols during later expeditions until you encounter and defeat the stronger boss. Community and guide reports mention bosses such as Ancient Dragon, Death Rite Bird, and Godskin Duo, but those examples are not confirmed as a complete or exclusive roster.
Can you repeat a particular Oldest Gaol encounter?
PowerPyx reports a method based on repeating a matching expedition and map layout to target a known encounter. Treat it as a reported strategy, not a universal guarantee: it requires matching the expedition and layout, and no verified encounter odds are available.

If you prefer not to plan around a particular layout, opening Evergaols during normal expeditions is the simpler approach, though it may take multiple attempts. The targeted method may reduce guesswork when you can reproduce the reported conditions, but it is less flexible.
